And you keep repeating the accusation that the FBI covered something up. Right now, the only evidence is Chuck Grassley’s letter. The Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, also said, at the time, that the information on Biden’s laptop "is not part of some Russian disinformation campaign." So they did know. Even the letter sent by all those former FBI trying to push the Russian disinformation narrative, said "We want to emphasize that we do not know if the emails, provided to the New York Post by President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, are genuine or not and that we do not have evidence of Russian involvement, there are a number of factors that make us suspicious of Russian involvement." The FBI never claimed it was Russian disinformation. What former national security and intelligence officials from other branches said or did is kind of irrelevant to your accusations against the FBI. The FBI under Trump's administration never said it was Russian disinformation. I'm not sure how they covered up something that they never claimed? www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/fbi-hunter-biden-laptop-russia/2020/10/20/3478408a-133d-11eb-bc10-40b25382f1be_story.html The FBI notified Congress late Tuesday that it has “nothing to add at this time” to a statement made by President Trump’s director of national intelligence disputing the idea that Russia orchestrated the discovery of a computer that may have belonged to Joe Biden’s son.

Just reading all this and the sentence above jumped out at me. Biden was not in office in October 2020. Therefore, there was no Biden Administration in existence in October 2020....ergo, how could anything be suppressed by Joe Biden in October 2020? Carry on........ It pays to read the entire thread, or at least my posts if you're aiming for a gotcha at me. Carry on...

So just to summarize the facts
As of now, there is no evidence of a connection between Hunter Biden's laptop and President Biden. Hunter Biden is currently under investigation by the DOJ. A US Attorney, appointed by Trump, is in charge of the investigation. So far, there have been no charges. President Biden's administration did not suppress the press regarding the laptop. The FBI under Trump's administration never claimed it was disinformation. The only evidence of a cover-up by the FBI is a letter from Chuck Grassley.
Would you agree? Did I leave something out?

In late 2020 we had Hunter's laptop. They labeled it Russian disinformation. It was verified and verifiable via criminal search warrants. Then after Biden got into office they admitted it wasn't Russian disinformation. Those ARE the facts that we know at the moment. Okay. What is it you want done exactly? Because I’m not understanding anymore what it is you’re trying to achieve. Nobody on this thread is saying Hunter should be protected. He’s already being investigated by two jurisdictions and nobody here is protesting that. Joe is not meddling in either of those. What we’re saying is that no one in the public sphere or media knows to-date if the allegations of an FBI cover-up by Thibault and Auten on Hunter’s behalf are true or not. Not even Grassley himself who was purportedly approached by whistleblowers. He enumerated a long list of materials from the FBI his committee wants to review. Wait until a proper assessment is completed and published so we can all know if there was indeed a cover-up initiated by the two. For us to get angry at this juncture is a pointless endeavor because we don’t even know the truth yet.

This was written in 2020 just before the election with the information that was available. Two things kind of pop out when you read this story. 1. They really are going to have a problem with chain of custody with this laptop. 2. The intelligence community would not being doing their job if they had not considered this was a Russian setup to meddle in our election. From CBS…. link“ What we know — and don't know — about Hunter Biden's alleged laptop” BY BO ERICKSON, STEFAN BECKET UPDATED ON: OCTOBER 16, 2020 / 4:45 PM / CBS NEWS “Wilmington, Delaware — President Trump and his allies have launched a late effort to again tarnish Joe Biden by tying him to his son Hunter Biden's overseas business interests, publicizing emails and photos supposedly from a laptop alleged to have been abandoned by the younger Biden and timing their release in a manner reminiscent of Russia's efforts to dump damaging material about Hillary Clinton in 2016. Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal lawyer, said his own attorney, Robert Costello, obtained the material from the owner of a computer repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware, after Hunter Biden allegedly left it there for months. Giuliani provided the material to the New York Post on Sunday, and the Post began running stories about the supposed documents this week. But the owner of the computer store, John Paul MacIsaac, was unable and unwilling to answer key questions about how the laptop supposedly arrived in his store, and eventually, how the data was shared with Giuliani. CBS News interviewed MacIsaac for almost two hours on Wednesday and throughout the interview he contradicted himself about his motivations, raising questions about the truthfulness of one of the central figures in the story. MacIsaac told CBS News that he first turned over the hard drive to the FBI last December during the president's impeachment, and provided a copy of its contents to Costello after becoming frustrated by the Senate trial in January. MacIsaac refused to provide key details about his interactions with Giuliani. The Post's first story ricocheted across major social media platforms on Wednesday before Facebook and Twitter moved to block its distribution, seemingly wary of allowing the dissemination of the kind of misinformation that spread across their networks in the run-up to the 2016 election. Mr. Trump seized on the Post story and the ensuing tech crackdown to paint Biden as corrupt and the media as complicit before a massive crowd of supporters in Iowa on Wednesday night. Giuliani apparently held the information for months and released it less than three weeks before the election. Giuliani has long been involved in efforts by the president and his allies to highlight Hunter Biden's work overseas to damage Joe Biden and boost Mr. Trump's reelection campaign, and in 2019 met with a Ukrainian lawmaker who has been deemed an "active Russian agent" by the U.S. government. In December 2019, National Security Advisor chief Robert O'Brien conveyed concerns to Mr. Trump that Giuliani was being targeted by a Russian disinformation campaign aimed at discrediting Biden, current and former advisors in the Trump administration told CBS News' Paula Reid. Giuliani's meeting with the Ukrainian lawmaker — Andriy Derkach — was one of the reasons for those concerns. What was allegedly on the laptop?CBS News has not seen or corroborated the data supposedly on the hard drive, and Giuliani has declined to allow other news outlets to review the information. In a story published Wednesday, 20 days before the election, the Post said it included a trove of Hunter Biden's emails and photos, some of which it published. The Post story trumpeted a "smoking-gun email" allegedly showing Hunter Biden had arranged for a meeting in 2015 between his father and an adviser to the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. Hunter Biden was a member of the board. A photo of the alleged email published by the Post shows it was written by Vadym Pozharskyi, the Burisma adviser, and reads, in part: "thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent [sic] some time together." The Post presents this line as evidence that Pozharskyi met with Joe Biden, who was spearheading the Obama administration's policy toward Ukraine. If true, it could contradict Biden's assertions that he "never discussed" his son's foreign business interests with him. But a spokesman for the Biden campaign said a review of Biden's schedule for the period in question showed no such meeting with Pozharskyi, and several of Biden's top advisers who worked closely with him on Ukraine policy have publicly said they've never heard of him. While they did not rule out the possibility that Biden and Pozharskyi interacted briefly on the sidelines of an event, they said a formal meeting did not happen. "We have reviewed Joe Biden's official schedules from the time and no meeting, as alleged by the New York Post, ever took place," said Andrew Bates, a Biden campaign spokesman. Republicans and the president's allies allege Biden pushed in 2016 for the ouster of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin to shield Burisma and, by implication, Hunter Biden from an anti-corruption investigation. But both the U.S. and the European Union had called for Shokin's ouster over his failure to prosecute officials for corruption, and an investigation into Burisma was at that point dormant. Biden eventually threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid from Ukraine unless Shokin was fired, and the country's parliament voted to remove him in 2016. Mr. Trump was impeached by the House last year over his efforts to pressure the current Ukrainian government to investigate Hunter Biden's ties to Burisma. After Mr. Trump was acquitted by the Senate, Senate Republicans launched their own investigation into Hunter Biden's Ukraine connections, resulting in the publication of a report last month that called his actions "problematic" but did not allege the former vice president acted to protect his son, nor accuse him of any wrongdoing. How did the laptop supposedly get to Giuliani? The owner of the repair store's political motivations came to light in the interview with CBS News and a few other reporters, raising even more questions about the veracity of how this supposed laptop became public. MacIsaac, the owner, said several times how he felt Mr. Trump was treated unfairly during his impeachment trial and suggested if the alleged documents are true, the "sham" impeachment was reason to release them. He also repeatedly mentioned his girlfriend left him after he voted for Trump in 2016. Asked about the timeline of events detailed in the Post story, MacIsaac told CBS News that a man who identified himself as Hunter Biden dropped off three laptops to have them repaired in April 2019. He said the man never paid him for the repairs and did not return to pick them up. Standing in his shop on Wednesday, MacIsaac admitted he was unable to confirm it was actually Hunter Biden who dropped off the laptop because he is "legally blind" and only realized it was the former vice president's son when Hunter stated his name for the point of contact. The Mac Shop is equipped with indoor cameras that preserve recordings for two months. MacIsaac said he did not realize the significance of the laptops until after the footage was automatically deleted. MacIsaac also would not reveal when he first looked through the data, and refused to provide key details about his handling of the material. Asked by CBS News if he actually saw the email purportedly from Pozharskyi, he repeatedly said "no comment" before saying he "believed" he had. MacIsaac refused to answer in any detail whether or why he would have searched through the laptop to find a four-year-old email, which seemingly appears to be an innocuous message about arranging a meeting for coffee. MacIsaac provided no additional details to CBS News to corroborate he saw these alleged documents. He told CBS News he reached out to the FBI through "people that [he] trusted" and was eventually put in contact with two FBI agents. On December 9, 2019, he was issued a subpoena demanding he turn over the laptop and hard drive to a federal grand jury in Wilmington, according to a photo of a copy of the subpoena published by the Post and confirmed by MacIsaac. He said he complied and turned over the hardware, but first made a copy of the hard drive's contents. MacIsaac described becoming frustrated while watching Mr. Trump's Senate impeachment trial in January, with no updates from the FBI. "This country had its third impeachment, and I honestly felt like it was a sham, because of what I had seen," MacIsaac said. The FBI declined to comment, and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Wilmington said it could "neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation." MacIsaac contradicted himself repeatedly about why he wanted to share the alleged contents of the hard drive. He first asserted he went to the FBI for protection, fearing possible retribution from the Biden family. When the FBI supposedly did not act, he said he thought the FBI could be out to get him, which is why he turned to Giuliani. MacIsaac responded to most questions about Giuliani with "no comment," saying he "didn't feel comfortable" discussing it. He declined to say whether he sought Giuliani out or vice versa, but he indicated he viewed the former New York mayor as a potential ally. "When you are afraid and you don't know anything about the depth of waters that you're in, you kind of — you want to find a lifeboat," he said. "I was told not to talk to anybody else," MacIsaac said at one point, refusing to provide specifics. Giuliani told CBS News on Wednesday that MacIsaac had reached out to Costello "around the time of the impeachment hearings," and that he has neither met nor spoken to him personally. Over the course of the interview, MacIsaac said he felt his life and business were in danger by possessing this information, invoking debunked conspiracy theories of revenge, specifically mentioning false allegations that a Democratic National Committee staffer was murdered in 2016 to cover up his supposed involvement in leaking Democratic Party emails. The emails were in fact stolen by Russian intelligence operatives, and the conspiracy theory surrounding his death was boosted by a Russian disinformation campaign. Experts warn about potential foreign interferenceThe U.S. intelligence community has warned for months that Russia is actively working to "denigrate" Biden by amplifying allegations of corruption, and experts have issued dire warnings that Russia could orchestrate a "hack and dump" operation similar to its effort to steal and release stolen Democratic emails in the runup to the 2016 election. Moreover, Russian hackers are believed to have breached Burisma's systems earlier this year, and Giuliani himself has been tied to Ukrainian lawmaker acting as a Russian agent who has publicized private recordings of Biden speaking to Ukrainian officials in the past. But as of now, there is no evidence that Russia was directly involved in obtaining or publicizing the alleged information on Hunter Biden's laptop. The Biden campaign has also offered no alternate explanation for how this alleged personal information came to light. George Mesires, an attorney for Hunter Biden, did not immediately reply to a phone call and email seeking comment on Wednesday. But in a statement to the Post, he said Giuliani "has been pushing widely discredited conspiracy theories about the Biden family, openly relying on actors tied to Russian intelligence." In August, an assessment by the U.S. intelligence community singled out the Ukrainian parliamentarian, Andriy Derkach, for "spreading claims about corruption — including through publicizing leaked phone calls — to undermine former Vice President Biden's candidacy and the Democratic Party." The Treasury Department leveled sanctions against Derkach in September, describing him as an "active Russian agent" who has done the Kremlin's bidding for more than a decade. Derkach and Giuliani met in Ukraine last December at the height of the impeachment saga, as Giuliani worked to uncover damaging information about Hunter Biden. In January, the cybersecurity firm Area 1 revealed that Russian military operatives had launched a phishing attack against Burisma and accessed its systems. The extent of the breach was unclear, but the report said the attack "raises the spectre that this is an early warning of what we have anticipated since the successful cyberattacks undertaken during the 2016 U.S. elections."

How exactly would you like to hold accountable former officials, now private individuals, for writing something that later turned out to be false? I don't know. Maybe we could ask the people trying to hold the private individual in Mar A Lago accountable?🤔 You're not really trying to equate the two incidents are you? That would be an egregious example of a false equivalency. A former president removes boxes of classified documents, possibly containing info on nuclear weapons, stores them in an unsecure location and refuses to comply with a subpoena. Former intelligence officers wrote a letter based on the information they had at the time, expressing concerns about possible disinformation that later turned out to be false. If you think the former officials should be accountable, as Liza already suggested, write to the Senate Intelligence committee. Republicans have already started preparing for investigations on Hunter, the laptop etc. If they gain control of the House or Senate, I have no doubt they will investigate and possibly call those former officials to testify.

You’re supposedly the purveyor of truth here, but you can’t be honest about your own identity? What threat to democracy? What information relevant to the 2020 presidential election are you talking about? Are you upset that Trump lost? Is that what all this is about? Is it your assertion that Biden won because 51 former CIA, NSA and ODNI personnel wrote that letter to Congress? No. The Hunter saga was already ongoing prior to the election and Trump himself used it as his “October Surprise.” Biden won because voters wanted to get rid of Trump. And for good reason. Well, how would I know they’re lying? They’re intelligence professionals privy to intelligence and experience I’m not exposed to. That could very well have been their hunch at that time with what they’d seen and what they'd experienced. They themselves wrote: " We want to emphasize that we do not know if the emails, provided to the New York Post by President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, are genuine or not and that we do not have evidence of Russian involvement -- just that our experience makes us deeply suspicious that the Russian government played a significant role in this case." Suspicion . So, what is there for me to be upset about? First, you’re complaining about the FBI. Then you’re complaining about a CIA-NSA-ODNI letter that has nothing to do with the FBI. Regardless of which alphabet soup agency you want to skewer in service to your assertions, evidently, people didn’t care about Hunter or his laptop because Joe won.

Just to be clear, you started with a claim that the Biden Administration, in a coordinated effort with the FBI, worked to cover up Hunter Biden's laptop and to suppress the free press. The FBI lied, worked in tandem with social media to silence the story, covered up information regarding the laptop and as soon as Biden was elected, the revealed that it wasn't actually Russian disinformation. We veered into left field, you alleged that Biden is senile, you accused Merge of bullying, and you accused someone else of disparaging your mental health, although it was more likely your cognitive abilities that she was questioning. After disparaging Biden's cognitive abilities for 2 years, you were offended when someone questioned yours. And now the concern is over a letter written by former intelligence officers, based on information available at the time, expressing concern about disinformation that later turned out to be false. Their "deliberate and coordinated effort" was a letter signed by all of them. I think this is a classic example of "moving the goal posts."
Also wondering, how you know it was a deliberate attempt by the intelligence officers to mislead the American public? Without looking into all of their backgrounds, I’m going to guess that some of them worked for Republican administrations. How do you know they were politically motivated?

Every presidential family profits, even FJB’s. Politicians are inherently crooked. EVERY. LAST. ONE. OF. THEM. Trump was a businessman who ran this country like a business and did a great job of making us energy independent and EVERYONE had more money in their pockets. But I don’t remember reading about trumps kids making dirty deals with China and the Ukraine. But I remember hearing FJB’s kid in that respect. Funny… Did you forget? Ivanka received 7 trademarks from China for her company and Jared made a $2B deal with the Saudi's. And Trump ran the White House to line his own pockets with his best interests always foremost. Trump refused but previous presidents either divested or put their companies in blind trusts to avoid conflicts of interest. Trump had countless ethical violations and constantly broke presidential norms. Trying to compare Trump to Biden is ridiculous. Biden has tried to restore ethics to the White House. And again, Hunter does not work for the White House. www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/20/executive-order-ethics-commitments-by-executive-branch-personnel/Also for the record, we were not truly energy independent. We still imported oil and gas. We've had this discussion before, too. The actual facts don't seem to get in the way or stop you from repeating the same false information. Exactly. And all of these things began on day one of his presidency and continue today. There are so many examples of inappropriate behavior by all of the Trumps that it is hard to even remember all of them. Apparently fox, Breitbart or whatever other right wing media cindosha follows didn’t cover all of that.

I frankly do not understand being upset about an opinion offered by former intelligence officials. It’s an opinion.

I realize I am probably going to deeply regret wading into this thread, but here goes nothing. Ok, I’m not a big fan of Biden, but there is something I genuinely don’t understand about the “but his laptop” arguments. Conservative peas, let’s say for the sake of this conversation that I believe everything you say is on the laptop, is on the laptop. Let’s say I believe Hunter is the biggest drug addict ever, he had incriminating photos with girls, he tried to sell access to JB. Let’s say I even believe the media just decided not to cover it. My question is - so? What exactly are the allegations against *Joe* Biden, the actual president? Why make such a big deal about what his kid did? It's not just the media that covered up that the laptop exists, which is bad enough. It’s that the FBI covered it up. And just long enough to get Biden in to the White House and THEN said oh, NOW we can let you know it's not Russian disinformation. ETA: myshelly I'm not even claiming what is real or not on the laptop. But they sure had SOMETHING they felt the need to hide. Aren’t Republicans the ones now whining about investigations being “too close” to an election?

This thread and pixiechick’s posts on it remind me of what trump and the gqp are currently doing regarding the classified documents. They just keep throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if anything will stick.
It is actually comical how she keeps saying that it was before Biden was elected but also blaming it on Biden.
If ANY politician or ANY member of their family has broken the law, investigate and prosecute. I don’t care what side they are on.

Mid -late October 2020 was days before the election, many people had already voted by absentee. Trump isn't even on the ballot yet. We're 2 plus years from the next presidential election. This seems familiar, though. Eleven months is too close to an election for a nomination to the Supreme Court, but 45 days is absolutely OK. McConnell already promised that if the Republicans gain control of the Senate in November, they won't hold hearings as early as 2 years before the next presidential election. Rules for thee but not me.

What is the obsession with Hunter Biden about? He isn’t in the administration or working for the administration or making money while they are working in their dad’s administration. If I was doing something wrong, I would do everything I could to avoid talking about it, including talking about other people doing what I was doing. For example, if I knew that my dear leader’s kids did all of the above, The last thing I would be doing is whining about Hunter Biden’s laptop. Or, if I had ranted and raved about the protection of classified information on a private email server, I wouldn’t have used burner phones, ripped up, flushed, and otherwise destroyed classified documents. And I sure wouldn’t be saying “defund the FBI” after tearing down the idea of defunding the police. Or I wouldn’t be contradicting everything that I said over the last five years to spin my party in a different way. But republicans are allergic to irony and immune to hypocrisy. There is a special kind of personality flaw with them. Eta that if he did something wrong, I am fine with him being investigated. But I don’t think that what he may or may not have done is as consequential as what the Trumps did during his presidency. And I think they should have had some consequences. And again, I think it is hypocritical for people to constantly bring up Hunter Biden while ignoring the rest. What is the obsession with Hunter Biden about? He isn’t in the administration or working for the administration or making money while they are working in their dad’s administration. Because they downplayed it and outright lied about it being Russian disinformation during the campaign. They knew it wasn't at the time, but they pushed that lie until AFTER the election. THEN they admitted that yes, it was real, not Russian disinformation. There's been a poll since then that said a significant amount of Biden voters wouldn't have voted for Biden had they known the truth at the time. Because Hunter's business partner HAS testified that Hunter WAS making money from his dad's position as VP. That's why it's a problem. And again, I think it is hypocritical for people to constantly bring up Hunter Biden while ignoring the rest. And vice versa. I would like to point out a couple of falsehoods here. The poll was small, only 1,000 people. And the question wasn’t would you have changed your vote, the questions were do you think it’s important and do you think it would have changed the outcome of the election? www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics/march_2022/hunter_s_laptop_from_hell_is_an_important_story_voters_sayThere was another poll by the Federalist, but I think we can eliminate that one because of their documented bias. www.allsides.com/news-source/federalistIf there were others, please share, I would be curious to see the results and the question. Also the timing of the question. I think if Rasmussen conducted another poll now, it seems more than likely Democrats and possibly independents wouldn’t be too concerned about Hunters laptop.

You're not really trying to equate the two incidents are you? That would be an egregious example of a false equivalency. You asked "How exactly would you like to hold accountable former officials, now private individuals" I provided a possibility. Well, how would I know they’re lying? They’re intelligence professionals privy to intelligence and experience I’m not exposed to. The same way so many of these Peas don't wait for the truth, facts and evidence when the issue is facing the other way? Just to be clear, you started with a claim that the Biden Administration, in a coordinated effort with the FBI, worked to cover up Hunter Biden's laptop and to suppress the free press. With a correction that YOU quoted and keep ignoring in order to repeatedly push this point that isn't an argument anyone is making at this point and hasn't for days. A former president removes boxes of classified documents, possibly containing info on nuclear weapons Something is bothering me about this claim, if there is something that is so clearly an alarming threat to national security, why did the government sit politely by for a year and a half before they were alarmed enough to go retrieve something so dangerous to the country? I do believe that if Trump did anything wrong he should face whatever the consequences. I am ready to see him go so we can possibly heal as a country. I'm not sure that would do it as this point, but we need to try. This. I frankly do not understand being upset about an opinion offered by former intelligence officials. It’s an opinion. There's been a poll since then that said a significant amount of Biden voters wouldn't have voted for Biden had they known the truth at the time. I would like to point out a couple of falsehoods here. The poll was small, only 1,000 people. And the question wasn’t would you have changed your vote, the questions were do you think it’s important and do you think it would have changed the outcome of the election? Not the poll I was talking about. The poll I was speaking of "surveyed 1,750 Biden voters in seven swing states. Six of which (all but North Carolina) were called for Biden. We tested these voters’ knowledge of eight news stories — all important topics that our ongoing analysis had shown the liberal news media had failed to cover properly. We found that a huge majority (82%) of Biden voters were unaware of at least one of these key items, with five percent saying they were unaware of all eight of the issues we tested. This lack of information proved crucial: One of every six Biden voters we surveyed (17%) said they would have abandoned the Democratic candidate had they known the facts about one or more of these news stories. A shift of this magnitude would have changed the outcome in all six of the swing states won by Joe Biden, and Donald Trump would have comfortably won a second term as president." LINK
