He's now VP candidate.
I'm a bit surprised. I thought it would be Andy Beshar, and hoped it would be Scott Kelly.

This would also leave his Lt Governor, Peggy Flanagan, as the first Female Native American State Governor.

I thought it would be Kelly, Walz or Shapiro as those were the final three on her short list. I would have been happy with any of those.

As a life long Minnesotan, you could not have a better person in government. He is honest and caring.
I'm really excited for our lt. governor, Peggy Flanagan to move up to governor. I think she'll be great.

I love Walz, lifelong MN also. BUT he's problematic. One of the biggest issues right now is our economy. People in MN have a huge issue with what happened to the billion dollar surplus and where it was spent, and what happened to it. Then there's the handling of the George Floyd riots. There is the whole Feed our children, or whatever it was called scam of money.
Positives are, he weathered thru all of that. He's a gun owner, hunter and fisherman. he'll appeal to the republican's who think all dems are coming for their guns. He owns guns, he's not taking your guns. His next door neighbor MN dad vibe.

My DS is really into politics so I was texting with him this morning to get his thoughts on Walz and he's excited for him. Says he's "He’s center left. He’s a hunter who advocates for common sense gun laws. Only one on the ticket who’s served in the house of reps. He’s energetic and 59 years old. He will resonate with centrists and independents. He’s charismatic and a family man. I think he’s a great choice. He’s less risk than Shapiro. Might help in WI."
I think it was a good choice.

I have put him in my Things Learned from Peas folder, I appreciate the heads up last week. He seems like the person to offset complaints about radical left.
I even sent the info to my right leaning family members.

I was hoping for Shapiro, but I did have a few concerns about him. Walz seems like a great choice. He’s down to earth, likeabke, personable, relatable etc

People in MN have a huge issue with what happened to the billion dollar surplus and where it was spent, and what happened to it. This happened in Iowa when we went from a Republican governor to a Democrat. Blew through that surplus like it was nobody's business. I was fine with some of the spending, but damn! Then that triggered the vote back to Republican and jeepus krispy, we have a shit show of a governor now. Oye

I’m thrilled! He was my top choice but I didn’t expect him to be the nominee. He’s a decent human, vet, teacher, rural. I think the young people love him and we need their votes and enthusiasm. And FINALLY not a damn centrist, I’m shocked. We’ve consistently tried to appease the center so much we’ve lurched so far right we’re literally on the verge of fascism. We are living through some strange times.

Waiting for DH excuse not to approve. Doesn't like Trump. Doesn't like Biden. Ticked off Biden quit (he says it was not fair.) Doesn't think Harris policies are clear enough or she's just another Biden... whatever nonsense excuse he can come up with. We have a primary today, and getting DH to fill out his ballot (DS history teacher who I really like, is running for a state office he could at least fill out that part) and he's over there grumbling that it won't matter they'll just switch candidates. I swear if I knew he'd be like this when I married him... Walz being a gun owner, should be an asset for DH. If he doesn't fill out his ballot so I can put it in the mailbox every time he complains about politics I'm going to [buzzer noise] him until the next election I am happy with the VP choice.

Walz is a genuine, good person. For people who want to talk about blowing through the surplus, we still have a surplus and the money that was spent had to go through the legislature. IIRC the Republicans at the time wanted to just rebate all of it which would have been a huge mistake. A lot of money has been going into improving our infrastructure and I have no problem with that. He has also directed more money into the schools and I’m all for that too. MN was recently rated as one of the best states to raise kids and that hasn’t happened by accident.
I don’t have any problems with our Lt. Governor taking over but I still hate to see Walz go. I think he’s done a lot of good things for our state.

I didn’t know much about him before the VP race, but I like what I’ve seen. My initial preference was Kelly, but I think Walz hits a lot of the same notes, and he came out fighting to really earn the slot. Shapiro, IMO was a little too radioactive because of the Gaza / Israel situation, and I think it would have been easier to cast him as the typical elitist Democrat than Walz will be. So I’m satisfied.

Yes, but the republicans have a huge problem with this, or even people on the fence, being what the economy was. It’s our money. The tax payers money and a lot of people think it should come back to us when things are so expensive so relieve our personal finances.

MN was recently rated as one of the best states to raise kids and that hasn’t happened by accident. And those things often work together to raise the value of people's real estate, which is a concrete way in which the money worked for tax payers, even if they don't see the infrastructure and school improvements as valid enough places for the funds to be directed.

I'm pleasantly surprised. I thought she would go with Shapiro. I was hoping she would pick Kelly but when it got down to Walz or Shapiro, I definitely preferred Walz. I'd never heard of him until a couple of weeks ago, but when I finally paid attention, his resume fills in all the gaps. Shapiro had too much baggage and really didn't add anything to the ticket except Pennsylvania. While that is still a critical state, she has opened up more pathways than Biden had.
People dismiss the VP pick as unimportant but that has always been important to my decision (in the years where there was a decent choice on either side). It is the first decision a candidate makes that they will take with them throughout their presidency. It says a lot about the candidates' decision making abilities. My guess is that Walz wasn't really on her radar that much early on but she was open minded to see what qualities were needed in a candidate.

Lord, listening to Vance talk right now. That man is an idiot. Why they give him air time I have no idea.
He is going on about how Walz is a political extremist. Says he looks forward to debating him.

But a big part of why there was a surplus to begin with was because our unemployment rate is/was so low and lots of people working equals more tax money coming in. It doesn’t necessarily translate to the taxpayers getting fleeced the way Republicans think. If you want nice things, they have to be paid for in some way. I would rather pay the taxes and live somewhere nice and where things are taken care of than to pay no tax and live in a dumpster fire state with crappy access to good health care, crappy schools, crappy roads etc. They did rebate some of it, plus they passed the child tax credit which also helps families.

I was a Republican until our 38 count convicted former president came along. Don’t get me wrong, I like Governor Walz but I was very disappointed with our last legislative session. Any social cause had money thrown at it. I don’t think that every child in MN should get free breakfast and lunch. Every family here gets a $1700/per child tax credit with no cap. One of my friends has been looking for a house to rent. She is in law enforcement. A potential landlord told her that he would prefer to rent to someone on section 8 because he could get $4500 a month from them. $4500 a month from someone who gets government assistance when someone else with a job can’t afford that.
After MN spent the surplus, real estate taxes increased significantly, taxes and fees on just about everything else went up. I appreciate how progressive MN is but the spending under the Democratic leadership is bleeding us dry.

He’s the normal dad candidate, compared to the rest. Someone new. BUT mn has its big problems that are now going f to get dragged thru the national media

I don’t think that every child in MN should get free breakfast and lunch. This is so abhorrent! That you think this let alone say this is mind boggling. EVERY child should be eligible a free breakfast and lunch. FULL STOP! Again, forced birth but fuck kids outside of the womb.
