Wow, an apology from a candidate!! Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz "misspoke" when he said he used weapons "in war," a campaign spokesperson told NBC News on Friday. Walz's military record has faced scrutiny and outright attacks from the right, including his GOP counterpart J.D. Vance, who accused Walz of "stolen valor." *** The Minnesota governor said in a 2018 video distributed by the Harris campaign Tuesday: “We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at." *** “Governor Walz would never insult or undermine any American’s service to this country — in fact, he thanks Senator Vance for putting his life on the line for our country. It’s the American way," a Harris campaign spokesperson said in the statement."In making the case for why weapons of war should never be on our streets or in our classrooms, the Governor misspoke. He did handle weapons of war and believes strongly that only military members trained to carry those deadly weapons should have access to them, unlike Donald Trump and JD Vance who prioritize the gun lobby over our children,” the spokesperson added. Steven Cheung, Trump's often incendiary spokesman, told NBC News in an email: “Why won’t Tim Walz address his lies himself? Why does he need to send out lowly spokespeople to clean up his own mess?” www.rawstory.com/tim-walz-2668939182/Random comment: 1- There is simply no way that Vance's short stint as a non-combat reporter compares to Walz's 20+ years. Neither saw combat. And who cares? Personally, being in a workplace that has preferential hiring of veterans, I'm thoroughly unconvinced serving in the military makes you a better person or worker. Let's stick to policy, values, and vision for the country moving forward. 2- Tim Walz has to walk back a word choice while Trump still lies about bone spurs. Hey media. Why don’t you hold Trump to the same standard as Walz? 3- Okay....so now go after dt for all of his out and out lies during his presser. Can he walk back any of them or clarify them? The couch humper said he served in Iraq war....he never saw combat but no one blinked an eye when he lied by omission. Lawrence O'Donnell is correct. There is always a double standard when it comes to dealing with dt and his couch potato.

There is always a double standard when it comes to dealing with dt and his couch potato. Im of the opinion that unless you were willing to enlist, then you shouldn't get to criticize any soldier who served their country & did so with honor. Which they both did. Exactly. I personally grieve friends who died in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I know they’re children who are now adults who don’t know their fathers. One of those soldiers was a National Guardsman who died in a convoy in Iraq leaving behind four young sons. No matter how long you served, a veteran is a veteran. I served both active duty and in the National Guard afterward. I ALSO got off active duty September 1, 2001. And went right into the National Guard. My unit had orders to deploy before my ex- husbands (he was still active at the time- served 30 years.) In the interests of clarity- I did not deploy that time. I was 9 months pregnant. Also, for anyone who hasn’t a clue about the military inclined to judge Walz for the “misrepresentation of his rank” (not that anyone here would- but you may be around people that do.) It is very common to be in an “acting” Whatever… role. In this case Command Sergeant Major (CSM) role. It is official as hell. And he would be afforded the all the respect and title (but not the pay.) Until all the boxes are checked, it isn’t permanent. Once he retired, he was no longer “acting.” He shouldn’t have continued to represent himself as such, and he shouldn’t have allowed others to continue to refer to him as such. Now. It is perfectly common for someone to be a “acting first sergeant.” And this is referred to as soldiers as “Top.” I know many people who got out and retired as E-6’s in “acting first sergeant” roles who’s direct reports years ago (also out of the military) still refer to them as Top. I have a guy who was my actual first sergeant 25 years ago who I remain friends with and although he got busted down and chose to get out of the military as an E-5… I call him top, and most people do. But the campaign should have known better and Walz should have definitely known better. The American people are so far removed from the military or knowing anything about it (or giving a fuck about the sacrifices even the ones that they don’t think did enough made) he should have made a point to have clarified in some way. It wasn’t even close to accurate- but not stolen valor.

Also… how tf many reporters have fucking died in (Correction:) Gaza??
Aid workers??
War isn’t pretty. And EVERYONE is in danger. And it doesn’t have to be an official war. I saw more bullshit and violence in Somalia and Bosnia than I did anywhere else. By the end of the Iraq/Afghanistan deployments, there were freaking movie theaters at some of the installations.
Even still, the captain of my ex husbands unit was injured badly enough taking a shit in a porta potty (usually on the perimeter for obvious reasons) to have to be sent back home. He never carried a “weapon of war” in a combat zone. But he bears the literal scars of war.
I’m seething at that bullshit comment.

If Walz had not left the education world, he would have been an excellent and beloved principal, I think. His level of empathy is just off the charts. People here have recoiled when they hear that there are people who eat cinnamon rolls with chili. He is from the area where people do this. In his honor, give it a try. Maybe start calling your casseroles a hot dish too.

Same. To minimize anyone's sacrifice (especially in the name of politics) is just bullshit and quite frankly, disgusting. And yes, I agree that it wasn't quite stolen valor. But it also was a bullshit thing to do, and he knew what he was doing as it had been pointed out to him and yet he continued to mislead people (there's a video going around that shows a reporter trying to correct him). I am not saying he is a bad person or a bad leader. But it does make me give him a side eye.

Wow, an apology from a candidate!! Guess he didn't get the memo that he's supposed to get irritable, threaten to throw that journalist out of the WH Press Corp, and then slap a fresh lie on top.

I appreciate that former MN governor Jesse Ventura endorsed Kamala Harris for president yesterday and criticized JD Vance for his attacks on Walz’s service. My daughter is active duty military right now. I have learned a lot about military life in the past five years and it’s kind of a clusterf#*$. There are often rumors that you might be sent somewhere and the dates often change. My daughter is a nurse and was told to prepare to deploy to assist with the pandemic response - unspecified location. They told her to get her affairs in order, be prepared to relocate for at least three months, and be ready to start by a specific date. Her in-laws took her dog back to Minnesota with them since her husband (also active duty) was away at training. They sent her to a location about 10 miles away from her base for two months. She didn’t have to relocate. I could list many examples of how they were told things that later on didn’t materialize. Often times it was a pain in the ass for her or cost her $.
At the end of next week she is moving back to MN because her commitment is coming to an end. I would love to have the Swiftboat people write up something to smear her years of service just for the entertainment value.

Don’t believe your orders until you have them in your hand and then you still shouldn’t believe them. We had orders to Charleston in hand. 2 weeks before we were set to move, DH was told pack your bags, you have 30 days leave and then you report to Hawaii. We had 2 weeks to plan a wedding, get married, get our papers in order and pack and leave.

I really liked what Beto had to say about Tim Walz he's a good guyInside with Jen Psaki @insidewithpsaki
BetoORourke on serving with Tim Walz on the Veterans Affairs Committee: "Tim Walz chose to be on that committee... because he wanted to deliver for veterans. Not for himself, not for his career, but for people who had served America. That’s who he is at his core.”

NYT had an article about universal school lunches today. Most of the advantages were brought up here but I thought these were good points Gift article- no paywall www.nytimes.com/2024/08/13/dining/free-school-lunch-programs.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Ck4.y7cX.MUVNAy89ZIGg&smid=url-shareFree school meals lead to better performance in class and can help rectify racial inequities. They also open the door for more creative approaches that might cost less in the long run, like buying more local food and providing healthy meals with less meat.Universal school food can prevent “lunch shaming,” a term that has become popular to describe what happens to families with unpaid school-meal debt. A student might go through the cafeteria line, but have the meal taken away in front of other students because the family lunch account has an outstanding balance. Sometimes, a child with school-lunch debt will be given a substitute, like a peanut butter sandwich. The argument is that schools foot the cost of computers and desks. So why not food, which is essential to learning? And the Republican counter argument Although Mr. Trump has tried to distance himself from Project 2025, a conservative blueprint for the next Republican president, the document states that federal school-meal programs “increasingly resemble entitlement programs that have strayed far from their original objective and represent an example of the ever-expanding federal footprint in local school operations.”

We need someone who gets it! Someone who understands parents and the very real issues they face.

From a TFG campaign spokesperson... In the video she says his name( she supposedly made up) ........Tim A Walz......... quickly which infers a very negative thought!! Trump campaign spokesperson Caroline Sunshine said Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz "never held a real job in his life" — despite his years of teaching and serving in the National Guard.During a Wednesday interview on Real America's Voice, host Terrence Bates complained to Sunshine that reporters were not questioning Walz "on his repeated lies about his military service and every single other thing that seems to come out of his mouth." "Tim A. Walz, as I like to call him, because when Tim was asked to, you know, answer the call to service and deploy and fight for our country, he chose to step down and run for Congress," Sunshine replied. "He's never held a real job in his life, by the way. He spent all of his life running for Congress, running for office or in office."Sunshine insisted Walz's retirement from the military after 24 years amounted to "being derelict in his duty." "And Tim Walz went on to have a political career, like the career politician that he is, always putting himself ahead of his country," she opined. Walz worked for years as a geography teacher and high school football coach, and served for 24 years in the National Guard. www.rawstory.com/tim-walz-real-job/Random comments: **. So, teaching for almost 20 years isn't a job? Being in the National Guard for 24 years is not a job? Being a member of Congress for 12 years isn't a job? Being a governor for 5 years isn't a job? Boy, she stepped on a ton of toes there. **. I was in the Guard for 16 yrs. My unit was a collection of cops, teachers, firefighters. Especially heavy on LE & Fire. I don't know who the GOP thinks populate the "citizen soldier" ranks, but regularly insulting them is weird. **. She has just insulted every current and former teacher, every current and former member of Congress and every current and former governor. What an idiot, but according to trump she must be the best of idiots because he only hires the best.

So ABC decided to fact check Tim Walz. He made the comment he was the first person that was a union member on presidential ticket since Reagan ABC says not true. There was another candidate on the presidential ticket that was a member of a union. If you don’t already know I’m pretty sure you will never guess in a million years. The name is in the link. Seriously. When You see who it is you can understand why Walz’s team missed who it was. ABC News… “Speaking to AFSCME members in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz claimed he was the "first union member on a presidential ticket since Ronald Reagan." trib.al/nwfZqu2” x.com/abc/status/1823833752616743076?s=61&t=j45uMgNk1i8O0YllKF58nw
