Ah, I see this thread has brought some of the MAGA trash back with it. I'm sure you ladies are feeling yourselves right now.
(Of course I know people who are here without documentation. Generally speaking, I'd say to keep all of them and deport the gun-humping MAGA idiots. That would be actual common sense.)

In general, they were handing out loaded credit cards as they got off of busses and airplanes. And put up in luxury hotels with three squares and laundry service. A nice gig if you ask me. Ah ok... Because they were shipped north from Texas and Florida with only the clothes they were wearing. Like Florida is a border state. They were given funds to initially assist them. Certainly not luxury hotels up here in the northeast. They were dropped off with little to no warning. They needed immediate help, which was given freely. The people up here treated them as vulnerable humans. Not as trash like Abbott and DeSantis did, not something they should be proud of... BTW: Helping those in need is a good christian value.. not practiced by the TFG administration. How many years ago they sent families from New Orleans up here. They were expected. There was housing made available, apartments, furnishings, food and clothing provided. The border should have been closed.

Quite honestly even though I'm an American citizen BY BIRTH, I was born overseas and still retain a trace of my accent. And I've encountered enough government officials over the years who insisted that I couldn't be a citizen if I wasn't born in one of the 50 States and that I needed to produce my naturalisation papers...that I'm a little concerned tbh. There have been people who have had their documents challenged because they were born in "New Mexico." And I saw one person was told her documents were fake because it had LA listed as a state, and it's a city in California. LA, is of course, the abbreviation for Louisiana. There are people in positions of authority who lack basic knowledge of all sort of things, and they will be given the opportunity to make snap decisions now, and figure out the legality later.

My next door neighbors are undocumented. They have 5 children (now in their late teens/early 20s) - kids all born in the U.S. I love my neighbors & have known them 15 years. They are wonderful people, hard working & just good folks. I don’t know her well because she doesn’t speak much English & is shy but his English is excellent & he has helped me with some home/yard projects. He’s been trying to get citizenship for several years but it isn’t easy to do, but I know he’s trying & I’ve written character letters for him. But…they are not here as legal citizens & it is awful to think they may be deported. It would be horrible And to avoid family separation they could ALL be deported to preserve the family. Kids that age could stay, but.....

Actually I wouldn’t be able to respond if I couldn’t read. I just posted that it is the 20 million people let over the border in the last four years that are criminals, murderers, and rapists that he’s going to be concentrating on. Those are the ones that are gonna be deported. But please, continue on with your semantics. So again, you are saying that 20 million criminals, murderers and rapists were “let in” to the country in the last 4 years?

We would have had better border security months ago if Trump hadn't squashed the border bill by telling his caucus not to vote for it. He did this so he could run on immigration reform. He clearly doesn't care about this issue. He uses it was a way to drum up support. He's a salesman and that's his pitch. The number of illegal immigrants is often exaggerated by right wing media since they never seem to point out that many people are turned back or that the number of encounters can be multiple encounters with the same person. There are of course some who get through without being caught. It's a problem but not nearly the numbers Trump claims. He wouldn’t have had to run on immigration if the current admin hadn’t let in tens of millions of illegals. Or if the republicans weren’t lying about it and making the situation worse rather than actually working to solve the problem.

He's created and repeated countless lies about immigrants to build fear and sell himself as a savior. And people have bought into his schtick.

Many of those undocumented immigrants work and pay taxes, pay into someone's SSA account, sales taxes, property taxes etc.. and never collect any of them. They particularly plump up the SSA system to allow others to collect. And many of them don’t. They just live off the taxpayer dime. How do they get benefits if they are illegal?

In general that's difficult when you don't qualify for any programs... In general, they were handing out loaded credit cards as they got off of busses and airplanes. And put up in luxury hotels with three squares and laundry service. A nice gig if you ask me. Those likely aren’t “illegals”. They are people who are claiming asylum and waiting for their hearings. That is legal. And that is why Biden asked for more funding to speed up the process of hearing their cases. But again, he was denied.

I know a few people that have come here legally. Hopefully they are safe. We have a lot of employees that I suspect are here illegally. It will have a big effect if they are deported. Aren't I-9's part of your hiring process (like... all American businesses??) And recertifying them as required by law?

If you care about an immigrant, tread carefully at letting the world know that you know where they are. Be the person who would have protected Anne Frank. And hell yes he is going to deport them. They have repeatedly said it. And they also said they want to deport some naturalized citizens. They just haven't said why they are targeting naturalized citizens. I'm assuming they will look at criminal records, or if they are considered "enemy of the US". I just don't know. It is extremely rare to have your citizenship taken away, but it can happen. And the ACLU will be watching this closely. And they also said they want to deport some naturalized citizens. They just haven't said why they are targeting naturalized citizens. Who is they??Stephen Miller, for starters. x.com/StephenM/status/1712094935820780029

Aren't I-9's part of your hiring process (like... all American businesses??) And recertifying them as required by law? Yes - but many smaller employers aren't equipped to determine if the documents provided for the I-9 are valid - in general if you hand the hiring manager a photo id and a social security card with a matching name then you've fulfilled the requirements. They don't have the wherewithal at a store or farm level to verify that they are a) real and b) belong to the person they hired. Can you recognise a fake ID and/or a fake SS card? I'm reasonably sure I couldn't unless it was a particularly bad fake. and tbh - anytime I've had to fill out an I-9 and have used my passport as my ID (it covers both photo id and right to work) there's been confusion even though it's clearly listed in column C and that you need either 1 from both A and B OR 1 from C.

That’s the trouble with politicians, the bill should have JUST been for the border. But it wasn’t. Even the republican that wrote the final version of the bill said that it was not passed because of Trump’s interference. From what I know of the bill, it was not all that I would have wanted. But it was a start and it was a bipartisan effort to work on the issue. But Trump said he didn’t want it to pass so he would be able to use the border as a campaign issue. So it didn’t pass. ETA that Stephen Miller still works with Trump. Also, I don’t know the official laws surrounding asylum seekers but have heard that it is required that countries take care of them while they are waiting for their hearing. They can’t work (which I think should change) so how are they going to be able to live unless they are getting assistance? It takes too long to have a hearing—which is why Biden asked for more funding to speed it up!!

I've reviewed I-9's for alot of years and I agree, I am not well versed in ferreting out which documents are fake. I can't say I've never been presented with any, because I don't know... but I've definitely never identified one as fake. Federal law considers it illegal- punishable by fines or prison for non-compliance or making false statements, including using false documents.... Would that not make the person a criminal? In addition to breaking the law by being here illegally to begin with? Either way, criminals can go buh bye.

I think a point of ignorance that folks have is that many folks who are now undocumented came into the country legally. yes - many undocumented immigrants legally came in (usually by plane not over the border) on a legal visa (work, tourist, student...) and simply didn't leave when their visa expired. Also many of the people who are being called illegal immigrants are actually asylum seekers - who have to be physically IN the US to apply for asylum - or refugees (those whose asylum application was accepted). Unless/until their asylum application is rejected - they have the legal right to remain in the US pending that application review and thus are NOT illegal immigrants.

Philosophers have been debating the "paradox of tolerance" since it was given that name in the 1940s, when it was kinda relevant with the Nazis and stuff. But a concept that stretches back throughout history, even alluded to by Thomas Jefferson. Just another example about how this has played out before, history rhymes, etc. So you're going to have to do a bit more than that to make your case. 'Cause the case made for not having to be tolerant of the intolerant has already been well argued.

He’s a radical has-been who hasn’t been in power since 2021. He was the keynote speaker directly before Trump himself at the infamous MSG rally last month. He was on the advisory board for Project 2025, and he's largely expected to have a role in the new regime. He's a radical, but he's no has-been.
