This seems appropriate here heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/november-8-2024There are also stories that voters who chose Trump to lower household expenses are unhappy to discover that their undocumented relatives are in danger of deportation. When CNN’s Dana Bash asked Indiana Republican senator-elect Jim Banks if undocumented immigrants who had been here for a long time and integrated into the community would be deported, Banks answered that deportation should include “every illegal in this country that we can find.” Yesterday a Trump-appointed federal judge struck down a policy established by the Biden administration that was designed to create an easier path to citizenship for about half a million undocumented immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens. Marcotte recalled that Catherine Rampell and Youyou Zhou of the Washington Post showed before the election that voters overwhelmingly preferred Harris’s policies to Trump’s if they didn’t know which candidate proposed them. An Ipsos/Reuters poll from October showed that voters who were misinformed about immigration, crime, and the economy tended to vote Republican, while those who knew the facts preferred Democrats. Many Americans turn for information to social media or to friends and family who traffic in conspiracy theories. As Angelo Carusone of Media Matters put it: “We have a country that is pickled in right-wing misinformation and rage.”

I have a friend who is first generation born in the US, parents came from Cuba - not sure how, it wasn’t something I asked. I fear for her, but more so for her parents and others in the family of her parents generation

He’s a radical has-been who hasn’t been in power since 2021. You slay me! Now that I've stopped laughing, you do realize he will have a major role in the new admin, right? He's the evil, hand-wringing mastermind behind T's plan to rid the country of "illegals", many of whom aren't.

Ah, I see this thread has brought some of the MAGA trash back with it. I'm sure you ladies are feeling yourselves right now. (Of course I know people who are here without documentation. Generally speaking, I'd say to keep all of them and deport the gun-humping MAGA idiots. That would be actual common sense.) And the overwhelming majority voted to take out the trash in January. 🤣 A lot of you folks have been bamboozled by your husbands, SO’s, kids, etc. That harris ad about women not telling their husbands who they voted for isn’t going to age well. Too big to rig, right? 😝

Oh ok…I didn’t realize you were part of the group helping Trump pick his cabinet members and you had inside information … My bad!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 And again, the “many of whom aren’t” won’t be deported. That’s just silly.

Sadly, your party can’t say the same.

Yes - but many smaller employers aren't equipped to determine if the documents provided for the I-9 are valid - in general if you hand the hiring manager a photo id and a social security card with a matching name then you've fulfilled the requirements. They don't have the wherewithal at a store or farm level to verify that they are a) real and b) belong to the person they hired. Can you recognise a fake ID and/or a fake SS card? I'm reasonably sure I couldn't unless it was a particularly bad fake. and tbh - anytime I've had to fill out an I-9 and have used my passport as my ID (it covers both photo id and right to work) there's been confusion even though it's clearly listed in column C and that you need either 1 from both A and B OR 1 from C. I've reviewed I-9's for alot of years and I agree, I am not well versed in ferreting out which documents are fake. I can't say I've never been presented with any, because I don't know... but I've definitely never identified one as fake. Federal law considers it illegal- punishable by fines or prison for non-compliance or making false statements, including using false documents.... Would that not make the person a criminal? In addition to breaking the law by being here illegally to begin with? Either way, criminals can go buh bye. I hope you enjoy paying $5 for a tomato - or simply not being able to buy a tomato - when the farms lose most of their workers.

Ah, I see the party of tolerance, joy/unity, and it turns out hypocrisy and name calling has shown up. It seems your common sense isn’t common sense at all. Philosophers have been debating the "paradox of tolerance" since it was given that name in the 1940s, when it was kinda relevant with the Nazis and stuff. But a concept that stretches back throughout history, even alluded to by Thomas Jefferson. Just another example about how this has played out before, history rhymes, etc. So you're going to have to do a bit more than that to make your case. 'Cause the case made for not having to be tolerant of the intolerant has already been well argued. I think you know what I was referring to in relation to the tolerance. Not sure why you are bringing up nazis though. Seems like a stretch.

So again, you are saying that 20 million criminals, murderers and rapists were “let in” to the country in the last 4 years? Nope I misspoke. The murderers, criminals and rapists are among that throng. Sorry about that. Weird, there are only 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US and that counts those who were here long before Trump. Where did the 20 million go? Again, you seem like an unreliable source.

I have over 800 jars of food I’ve canned in the last couple of years in my root cellar as of now. I’m not worried. But anyway, I’m sure there are plenty of documented/legal farm workers.

It would be interesting to know how many gotaways and illegals that didn’t come through a port of entry there are…

I am genuinely curious though, are you really ok with 11+ million illegals consuming the resources (YOUR taxpaid dollars) of goods and services that should be going to aging, poor, veteran Americans first instead??? I’m not. I think Americans come first and foremost.

I’m not. I think Americans come first and foremost. The vast majority of people here illegally work and pay taxes, knowing they will never reap the benefits of the programs their taxes fund. They contribute to our economies and make things better by doing jobs that need to be done (and that aren’t being done by Americans). Study after study has validated the positive net effect these immigrants have on our economy. Since I know that they’re not, with limited exceptions, consuming resources needed by others, I’m fine with them being here. What we should be doing is broadening our guest worker program to accommodate those doing necessary jobs, so they don’t have to live in fear of being deported because too many people watched right wing media and believed their lies. And please understand that the rich right have made you think that poor people are taking what is yours. While the same rich right wingers are laughing as they write themselves ever larger tax cuts and set up a system designed to benefit them and not you. If you’re really concerned about services for the American poor, stop voting Elon Musk another tax break.

I’m sure there are a lot who do work and pay taxes, but I’m going to guess though that the “vast majority” of the ones that have come over since 2021 are not part of that group. And I think that billions in subsidies to house, feed, clothe, school and medicate should be spent on American citizens first.
