I'm sorry. I agree we need stricter sentences for DUIs.

I am so sorry. I feel that same anger at drunk drivers and how many of them walk away from killing someone.

I'm sorry. I too remember your posts. I cannot imagine.
Does MADD offer list of candidates like you describe? Is there a clearinghouse where we can check the voting records on this issue, for our states?

Thank you. We knew that he was eligible for parole, but it's been denied to him several times already and we had hoped they would keep denying for a while. He could have been held for up to twenty years per the terms of his sentence. He served just over seven. That is what I can never get my head round in the legal system. It's the same here.......if they get sentenced to 20 years then they should serve 20 years. If they get life then they don't come out until they are dead. It seems that courts give stiffer sentencing to robbers than they do to someone who takes a life. How can that be right? I'm sorry that this has happened to you. It must bring up some very emotional feelings and heartbreaking memories for you and your family. You are well within your right to get angry.I would be too (((((hugs)))))

MADD does not endorse candidates and I've never seen a list per se. I generally check the platform statements on statewide candidates, local judges and county/state attorneys, and if a position isn't listed (and usually it isn't), I email the campaign and ask. Sometimes I get a reply; sometimes I get nothing. If I get nothing I assume the issue isn't important to that candidate and I generally won't vote for them.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. It is every shade of wrong.
I remember when the accident (though I hesitate to call it an accident...) happened and how devastating it was, and then when the lenient sentencing was such a terrible blow.
No one should have to go through this.

I am so sorry for your loss, and for your frustration. I completely agree with you that we do not take drunk driving (car, boat, etc.) seriously enough.
I will tell you (and you probably know this) that the problem is not so much the laws (which at least everywhere I have practiced have permitted strict sentences) but the prosecutors and judges who actually determine sentences. It is horrifying, but so many of them think "there but for the grace of God go I" in a way that they do not think about, e.g., people who abuse crack cocaine or rob liquor stores. Where I worked in SC, both our own elected prosecutor and the elected prosecutor in the neighboring county were arrested for drunk driving. Appalling. I had a client sever someone else's facial muscles in a wreck and they got weekend time for six months. That's it. In your position, if you would consider it healing rather than reopening a wound, I would consider writing a letter laying out how your parents' deaths have affected you and everyone around you, append a picture, and send it to every district/trial judge and your elected prosecutor.

I am so sorry.
I liked your post because I 100% agree.
I was hit Thanksgiving 1999. Drunk was almost 2x over the legal limit. Ran a srop sign at 63mph and hit me. While I did survive,I had many surgeries and am in daily pain.
The idiot spent zero time in jail. ZERO.
Come to find out he was stopped a few years later for a dui again.
My cousin was hit by a dui on his TENTH dui.
The government doesnt give a rats ass about duis. Someone steals something small for the third time? Jail for life! Someone decides to be a fuckin idiot and get behind the wheel, eh who cares.
Hugs to you.

I am sorry you're going through this, it's so UNFAIR!
My cousin and her unborn child were killed by a drunk driver in 1988, she was eight months along. I still feel the shock of it today. The drunk driver was also killed, so we don't have to suffer like you do when they resume their lives. I feel death was too good for the driver, he should suffer!

Merge and Loriann13,
I am so sorry for what you all have been through at the hands of another. There is truly no sentence/punishment long or strict enough that can replace what was lost but I do wish that they considered drunk driving as attempted murder and if a fatality occurs then be charged with pre-meditated murder. It makes no sense to me how these can't be charged as such.

I am so sorry...that is so awful.
Watch for his name in the paper again because the chances that he'll tear apart some other family is pretty likely. (as if serving 8 yrs for 2 lives isn't bad enough...he's out to do it again)

You're right; too many of our elected officials have either been arrested for drunk driving or have a family member who has, so they're inclined to sympathy. I won't vote for candidates with DUI convictions, either.
