Merge: Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry and so very angry!! 8 years??? He took the lives of your parents!! Who could put a time limit on that. Whether or not it was on purpose, he still killed 2 people. He deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his life. Is this close to where you live? I can't imagine being even in the same State as this killer! I wouldn't trust myself!!!
The person who killed DH's nephew (his wife) got 40 years in jail. I can't imagine when/if she ever gets out because, again, I wouldn't trust myself. She was out on bail for 18 months, living 30 min from us. I was in fear that she would come to talk to us or harm us (the family).
Stay safe and stay far away from this person. This certainly isn't just and fair to let him go after only 8 years. This makes me sick. I'm so sorry for your profound loss and for your frustration.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, and I'm sorry this person is free.
I believe drunk driving to be one of the most singularly evil, selfish, disgusting acts a person can commit. I can't imagine how horrible it would be to lose a loved one in this manner just because someone CHOSE to drink and drive. It makes me furious how lenient our society is on drunk driving.
I'm really sorry.

OMG!! I remember when this happened. He only got 8 years, holy crap!! I am so sorry for your tragic loss and now for the ongoing hurt of knowing he is out and enjoying his family.

I'm so sorry. He made a choice, maybe not intentionally, but it had devastating consequences. I have ZERO tolerance for drinking and operating a vehicle.

Merge,
I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like the punishment for driving a boat and being DWI and killing two people is just not as harsh as driving an automobile would be. Why do you think the jury gave him such a light sentence?

Thank you all. I appreciate your kind words and sympathy.
To answer the question above, there was no jury or trial. He pled guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter, the toughest charge the county attorney felt she could make stick. A judge handed down the sentence, which was 6-20 years, but under state law he was actually eligible for parole after only 3 years. We were relieved he was at least given some prison time - it was within the sentencing guidelines for him to only get probation and community service.
A lot of my anger toward him comes from the fact that he was never once repentant. At the sentencing, he was allowed to "apologize" to us, but all he did was to portray himself as a victim who didn't deserve to go to jail because of an "accident." A few years ago, he wrote letters to us as part of his court-mandated twelve-step program. In them he blamed the alcohol, the layout of the lake, the setting sun ... everything in the world except himself. And he wrote about how him serving prison time wouldn't fix anything, as if it was all just horribly unfair to him. As an attempt at making amends, it pretty much sucked.
We are trying to find out if he will be allowed to drive a car or boat, and if he has to wear an alcohol monitor. If not, we have every reason to think that he will drink again and kill somebody else.

The person who killed my husband was drunk and he was released after ONE DAY!! My husbands car ran out of gas, he and a friend were pushing it across the street. Two lanes of traffic stopped to allow them to cross and this guy comes weaving around everyone else and slams into him. No license but drunk as a skunk. They just let this guy walk but that was 25 years ago so laws were a lot different then.
