I am so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine your pain. You are correct, it is wrong for this man to walk out of prison after serving only 8 years. I hope at least he remains sober and doesn't kill anyone else.

Merge, I agree with you. It is such a senseless act to get behind the wheel when you have been drinking. So easily avoided. I can't even begin to imagine the pain your family is going through. My thoughts are with you.

Oh Merge I am so sorry. The legal system is a disgrace. Disappointed to be an american today. The only way to stop this is to make the laws stricter. And put more value on lives citizens who are constantly doing the right thing. Thinking of you and your amazing parents. Jen

I remember when it happened. Devastating. And 7 years for taking the lives of two innocent people is not nearly long enough. (((hugs))) It's just not right.

Thanks for reply, Merge.
Slightly off topic, but related to Epeanymous comment about the system.
I was listening to story this morning about BudLight to remove its new slogan "The perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night." Who thought that was good idea?
Our society is truly messed up with the politics and big business bucks of alcohol. I have a family member in recovery and he noted how many billboards, table tents there are. The moderation and safety messages aren't being seen.

Merge and Loriann13, I am so sorry for what you all have been through at the hands of another. There is truly no sentence/punishment long or strict enough that can replace what was lost but I do wish that they considered drunk driving as attempted murder and if a fatality occurs then be charged with pre-meditated murder. It makes no sense to me how these can't be charged as such. There is a county next to mine in Michigan that charges you with second degree murder if you kill someone while drinking and driving, it's one of the toughest courts I've heard of in the area!

I'm incredibly sorry for the loss you continue to endure all these years later. I agree with everyone: DUI laws need to be stricter and they need to be properly enforced. Praying that the sharp edges of pain in your heart soften and dull as time goes on.

(((Merge)))
I am so very sorry that you have to deal with this travesty on top of your parents' murders.
You'll be happy to know that in NC that boaters are not allowed to drink alcohol at all. Where I lived in Carteret county, there are now police and coast guard patrol boats that monitor the waterways on weekends and holidays/summer vacations and give out tickets. I've never understood why people who would never drink and drive a car think it's ok to do so in a boat.
I totally agree that DUI sentences are such a joke. The parents of a good friend of mine were hit by a drunk driver. The only reason they survived with minimal injuries was their vehicle's safety features.
The drunk was the vice president of a bank with many political ties. He had several DUI convictions but got off because of who he knew. My friend's parents had better political connections, and so this horrible person finally got what was coming to him, lost his job, his cronies stopped covering for him, and he went to prison for a long time.
I hope and pray that this murderer doesn't hurt anyone else and uses his undeserved second chance for good.
I hope you find peace today.

I'm sorry that his parole is causing such pain for you. Experiences like that make you feel as though you are re-living the original loss all over again.
And a state supreme court justice... remember Jean Toal being cited for side-swiping a parked car, leaving the scence of the accident, and admitting she had been drinking that evening?
