Almost 8 years ago, he drank to more than twice the legal BAC limit, left the wheel of his boat while it was at full throttle to untangle a line at the back, and failed to notice as his boat veered off course. It mowed down my parents who were in shallow water near a dock. Mom was killed instantly; Dad lived 11 days.
I would really like to know what kind of fucked up legal system thinks it's OK for this criminal to walk free, to celebrate holidays and birthdays with his loved ones, to enjoy his grandchildren for even one minute while my parents are in the ground.
There really is no justice.
I will never vote for any candidate who opposes stricter sentencing for drunk drivers. And if you get behind the wheel of any vehicle after drinking, you're pretty much dead to me. There is zero excuse for this selfish act of careless disregard for the lives of others. As far as I'm concerned, if you kill someone while drinking and driving, we should lock you up and throw away the key.

Merge, I can't even begin to imagine what you're feeling, nor do I think I ever want to. Hugs to you and I'm so sorry that this asshole is out living his life while your folks are not. Unfair doesn't even begin to describe it.

I absolutely agree with you on drinking and driving of any vehicle.
I'm so sorry that this has happened and that it has brought up such horrible memories.

I'm so sorry. You're in my prayers today. I agree that the penalties for drinking and driving are not nearly enough.

I agree, there's no excuse for driving drunk. period. When you're ready, focus your anger into action and fight for stricter drunk driving laws!!

I am so so sorry. You are 100% correct. I believe in a lot of second chances. Drinking and driving is not one of them. I don't believe in suing for the most part, but I hope you sue him civilly for everything he's worth. Fewer than 8 years for two lives? How is that okay?

Thank you. We knew that he was eligible for parole, but it's been denied to him several times already and we had hoped they would keep denying for a while. He could have been held for up to twenty years per the terms of his sentence. He served just over seven.

I'm so sorry, Merge. This lowlife doesn't deserve to be out, ever, in my book. I guess at this point one can hope he fails to meet the terms of his parole and gets sent back to serve the full length of his original sentence (and hopefully he doesn't hurt or kill anyone else in the process).

I am so sorry! Stories like yours are why we "beat" it in to our daughters the importance of not drinking and driving (and not drinking in general). That is probably the most important lesson we have taught our girls.
Would you like to share a memory of your parents? I would love to hear about them.

I'm sorry. I have a friend who was hit head on by a drunk driver about 5 years ago. She survived with minimal injuries (compared to what could have been) but to this day she has chronic pain and I think she's still going to physical therapy (or getting some kind of pain relief therapy). I totally agree with you that we need to be much tougher on drunk driving, and especially when drunk driving results in a fatality.
