Irrespective of the number of seats, I think it's incredible that the SNP has 4.8% of the overall UK vote, despite only having seats in Scotland. Looking at it a different way though Lesley. UKIP has 12.6% of the vote and yet only have one seat against the 56 of SNP. Makes an interesting observation. ETA just incase I'm misunderstood.....that is only an observation I really don't care that UKIP don't have any more seats And have you noticed that the 'Cannabis is Safer Than Alcohol' party got 8,419 votes and the 'Monster Raving Loony' party got only 3,528!!

I'm happy for Scotland. Now we might have a chance of a real voice in Westminster.

I'm happy for Scotland. Now we might have a chance of a real voice in Westminster. I don't think it will really play out like that. With an actual majority, the Conservatives don't need the SNP to get anything passed, so the SNP have no bargaining chips left to play.

Ed Miliband is speaking now.
And he's resigned, effective after the service for VE Day at the Cenotaph this afternoon.

Ladies, what are your thoughts about the future of UKIP without Nigel Farage as leader? He was so much the face of UKIP, can it survive?

I live in Nick Cleggs constituency. He is wet and ineffectual and has done the right thing in resigning. Am delighted to see that buffoon Nigel Farage has been kicked up the arse. Can't abide the man.
Am very interested to see how the Labour Party leadership contest will go. I'm guessing that Yvette Cooper and Chuka Umunna will be front runners.
Interesting that Nicola Spurgeon and the Scots Nats have had a resounding and yet hollow victory, with no prize and no potential for power. If the former labour voters had stayed with labour, things would have been quite different this morning.
Paddy Ashdown's hat is the most interesting thing about the whole event.

Well, UKIP will probably survive, in the short term anyway, because of the boost it's had with the election results. They have a leadership contest in September it seems and he's said he will consider standing again then so perhaps the 1 UKIP MP will be the face of the party until then.
As a party they need to sort out some of their members - they've had some nasty moments during the election campaign!
If they don't start in-fighting because of Farage resigning as leader at the moment they should be able to muddle through until September and the scheduled leadership election at least.

I see no chance of proportional representation any time soon. Certainly this government, with an overall majority, will have absolutely no motivation to go down that path! I'm glad Milliband is going and only wish he had either let his brother get the job or resigned a couple of years ago when his unpopularity was already being discussed. His cronies love him,the public - don't. I like Harriet Harmon and am happy for her to take charge for now- even for her to run for leader proper. if only we had the likes of David Owen, Shirley Williams or the wonderful (deceased ) John Smith available.

I am not a fan of Harriet Harman. Her judgement in the past has been very poor. Her association with the NCCL and its links with PIE will come back to haunt her. Again. And rightly so.

Can't bear HH, but then.....I don't like many of them. I think Chuka would be a good bet for Labour. BarbaraUK, thanks for that info about UKIP. I'm sure their message won't go away....its just a case of whether they can establish themselves on any other issues so that they will be taken more seriously by more voters. They certainly have a few in-house issues they need to address!

snowsilver - in answer to your original question - apparently not! You (as a country) aren't very interested in who would be our PM it seems I can see how you would think that. But I can assure you that I am very interested and have been watching the news out of your country. I confess a bit of surprise at the landslide victory!

Not sure I'd call it a landslide but it was certainly more clear cut than the polls had predicted! Is it featuring much in your media?

Going over NI results, Sinn Fein lost Fermanagh/South Tyrone. Sinn Fein needs to lose abstentionism. It's not 1972. People don't want to elect someone who won't go to WM for them. Stormont is not enough. The policy is as outdated as Farrah locks and the leisure suit.

I think our interpretation of a landslide might be slightly different in so far they don't have a landslide overall majority. It would have to include a good proportion of the other 87 seats held by others parties. Yes, they do have 98 seats more than Labour but they only have a commons overall majority of 6 so that isn't really a landslide. And to be fair, they've gained the extra seats at the expense of the Lib Dems rather than taking them from Labour. The only party that has had a "landslide" victory over Labour is the SNP in Scotland IMO.

I've never understood the logic behind not taking their seat at Westminster either pierogi Why would anyone think of voting for someone that wasn't going to give them a voice on things that would affect their country.Doesn't make sense to me.
