News is sketchy right now, other than nine dead and the suspect is still at large.
Who goes into a church and open fires on people who are there for bible study?

Sick people do this kind of thing. They also go into movie theaters and schools, anywhere that no one expects them. Why? It is so tremendously sad, scary, disgusting.....

On the International news they are reporting that the pastor in charge is among the missing. Prayers for all involved.

MSNBC is reporting one of the dead is the pastor who is also a South Carolina State Senator.
Suspect is a 21 year old white male and the Police Chief of Charleston has been on and is calling it a hate crime.

Oh, I know that churches aren't immune to this kind of insanity, it's just becoming so effing common and it makes me sick. I totally agree with you and what frightens me more is that because this is all becoming so common place, that my shock factor is no where as high as it once was. It would be so easy to never leave our homes but then they win anyhow if we have no lives. There has to be a fix and not one that simply requires abolishing all firearms because clearly that isn't working.

This is so sad. I hate to hear of things like this where normal people are just going about their normal lives and some nut job destroys not only their lives, but the ripple effects on their families, friends, etc is horrible too.

Horrified to hear this on our news this morning. What a dreadful happening to the entire community. Our news is implying it could be linked to the deaths of unarmed black men by white police.

Saw that on our news this morning, what a horrifying, sad, senseless thing to happen. It said that the City Police chief is going to investigate this as a hate crime and they are searching for a white male suspect aged 21. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg)

I can't begin to understand why anyone would do such a senseless act. How can anyone have so much hate within themselves that they are so evil that they kill because of the colour of someone else's skin? ![:crying:](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/t4lmEAqHtTO6q6ksSmvP.jpg) It's heartbreaking.

Truly heartbreaking! And they just said on our news that the suspect sat through the entire Bible Study before taking the lives of those precious people. I pray they catch him soon!

because of the color of their skin ... That echoes part of what I posted on Facebook this morning. People aren't "making this about race." It IS about race. So senseless. So tragic. My heart bleeds for my state and its people.

What a senseless and horrific act. My thoughts go out to all all of those affected by this act of hatred. I also agree that it is so hard to understand how someone can commit such an atrocity for no reason.

I just saw this horrific story on the news. I don't even know what to say about the depravity of murdering people in a bible study in a church. GMA just talked about the pastor. He sounds like a giant of a man who spent his entire life working for peace.

Truly heartbreaking! And they just said on our news that the suspect sat through the entire Bible Study before taking the lives of those precious people. I pray they catch him soon! If he'd rushed in there, firing as he went I wouldn't be as shocked. It would fit the crazed gunman stereotype. But to sit there, listening to these people share their hearts and pray, and THEN shoot them? I can't wrap my mind around it. Praying for the capture of this criminal and for peace for the good people of Charleston.

While my kids are sleeping so peacefully right now, the innocence and peace of others has been shattered. My heart breaks for the families and victims, especially the 5-year-old that reportedly played dead to avoid being shot. That is a devastating cross to bear for the rest of his/her life.

Absolutely horrific. Evil is growing in this world and we are powerless to stop it, it seems. We aren't powerless though, the biggest thing we can do to combat evil is to love one another, even when that's really hard and when you really just want to scream at someone to STFU. Just this morning I was thinking about the Valedictorian who created an anonymous instagram account to praise his classmates, he got to know a little about each person and wrote about what the contributed to the school. I read about Harris Rosen who had done amazing things for the community of Tangelo Park. I realized that we all need to see the good in each other, even.. no ESPECIALLY when we see the greatest differences, that is how we combat evil, love, it's always been love and it always will be love. I am not good at this, I see that in myself but I decided(seriously just this morning) to commit myself to having only positive online interactions with people for today(one day at a time right?), to find at least one good thing about each person I come in contact with and to focus on that/those thing/s when I really want to just run away screaming or bitch them out. If we all did just those couple of things imagine how much nicer of a place we could live and yes I truly believe that even just these small changes could make a HUGE impact on the amount of violence and hate we see in the world today.

Oh how terrible. I had not heard that yet. I grieve for these families! And @nicksmom, that's what I don't understand either--to sit there for an hour then shoot. Sick and sad!
