I just read this because I have bought many pairs of cargo shorts for both DS and my dad. I didn't know they were bad, though. I am missing the bad in the story. If you are travelling and need to carry stuff cargo shorts are a good thing. Women carry a purse and men have pockets. (A man bag did not look good on Joey and it doesn't look good on most men either--unless they want to carry a purse which has it's own issues and I am not getting into that). The guys wearing the fitted shorts and colourful ones I have never seen in real life. I have seen some jean shorts, but no aquamarine or yellow or other colour fitted shorts. The guys look great in them. I just haven't seen any men wear them. (My experience is limited to Arizona, California and Hawaii). Back to my question. Are cargo shorts wrong? www.buzzfeed.com/pablovaldivia/we-need-to-talk-about-cargo-shorts?bffb&utm_term=4ldqpgp#.ceyq337Lq

They're kind of like the male version of mom jeans, IMO.

I don't know if they are wrong or not.We can be oblivious to this fashion faux pas together haha. My one son loves cargo shorts and my dh even has them. Why do we let someone with no identity dictate what is the "in" or proper thing to wear. I say if the guys like them, that is good enough.

The boys in my house would rather go naked before wearing cargo shorts. I could probably add denim to that list as well.
Colorful shorts-yes. Red is a favorite around here.
Shorts that have little prints of sailboats or bicycles or whales or whatever, yes.
Shorts rolled up to create a cuff? I've seen it. I think it's weird, but whatever.
Plaid? No way.
I see the boys in colored shorts, a long sleeved button down polo shirt with the sleeves rolled up and boat shoes. They look like 1983 all over again.
But no cargos. Never the cargo.

Cargo shorts (NOT jean shorts) is just about all DH wears, so if they are bad, I guess he's a fashion don't.
I see men EVERYWHERE wearing them as well. What the heck else are they supposed to wear, if jean shorts are out, too???

My husband doesn't really wear any other kind of shorts. But he's 45 and wasn't really known for his fashion sense even when he was in his 20s. I have to say, for something so horribly out of style, they are very widely available in every major store. ETA: At 6'5" with long, skinny legs, I think the narrower preppy shorts would look strange and too short on him. I'd also like to point out that it's possible to buy cargo shorts that aren't three sizes too big, which seems to be what a lot of men do.

He dresses himself as well, or better than most guys I know that are usually dressed by their wives. In style, or not, DH will never be caught in preppy shorts...colored or a print. No thanks.

This. Every day. For my 19 year old and his friends. And agree, they would rather go naked than wear cargo shorts. LOL

My almost 17 yo DS has a pair of cargo shorts that he wears occasionally. When it's time to do laundry and he doesn't have anything else to wear. Otherwise he wears colorful, flat front short like in the article. He has neon colors, aqua, seersucker, pink, a pair with embroidered anchors, etc.

I would die laughing if my SO came out of the bedroom in those preppy shorts. He only wears cargo shorts, and I'm okay with it. He's 53, so I think he doesn't really care what others think.

Most of the alternatives offered in that piece seem like the shorts version of skinny jeans (hipster shorts?). You will not find any of the males in this family wearing any of those.

What the heck else are they supposed to wear, if jean shorts are out, too??? My dh, too!! He looks pretty darn good in his cargo shorts. Now, my dh would not be caught dead in red shorts, plaid, or anything "short" or slim fitting. He does not have the body type (or youth on his side?) to wear those things. He would feel silly.

DH is mid 50's and wears cargo shorts. Please, Please, Please no preppy shorts, no cutsey shorts and no cuffs and NO jean shorts for men. Oh and no man-pris (capris for men), either
Heck, I have a pair (camo even!). I have cargo capri's, too. I love the pockets for phone and car keys. They're perfect for not carrying purse.

What the heck else are they supposed to wear, if jean shorts are out, too??? This. My dh is not known for being fashion forward in any way. He usually wears khaki cargo shorts. I think he may have a couple of understated plaid pairs. He won't go near jorts. Most men around here seem to wear cargo shorts. They don't look terrible or out of style to me--but I'm no fashion plate myself.

I think it's just a personality thing. My DH wouldn't be caught dead in red shorts or shorts with little sailboats on them. He was a college linebacker and still is built like one with huge shoulders and legs and a growly persona to match (he is actually a teddy bear but shhhh I didn't tell you that). I actually think the bulk of the pockets in cargo shorts balance out his top half. He is just a big guy. And as we have established in many threads, different clothes look good on different people.

Where in the heck are you all finding non-cargo shorts? DH and DS wear them almost exclusively. Both have them in colors other than khaki. DS(7) also has several pairs of plaid shorts. On that same note, where can you find non-cargo, non-athletic pants for little boys. I have the hardest time finding church pants for DS.

LOL thanks for sharing, I enjoyed that Both DH and DS have several pairs of cargo shorts and I just can't see either of them wearing the shorter, rolled shorts.

For teens, sure. I give a pass to my husband, who would rather kick a puppy than wear a pair of fitted, shorter length, bright yellow pair of shorts. I would draw a hard line on him using his clothing to carry around his Starbucks though!

Cargo shorts on men are fine. They can load the pockets or not. My pilot DH likes them for flying as they hold all the stuff he needs to carry with him. Wear them, don't wear them. But telling other people you don't like their cargo shorts is poor form.

According to my husband, all men's shorts are wrong. eta: after looking at that article, I much prefer the cargo shorts over all of the others shown.

I like cargo shorts. They look great on most people.
For dress up, I like flat front shorts, mid length, and a collar shirt. No little sail boats or whale prints, please.

My FIL died in 1998. I inherited his one pair of cargo shorts. I have the waist cinched in with two safety pins. They are baggy and not exactly flattering. I don't care, they make me think of him when I wear them.

Cargo shorts here too. He has several different colors. I don't know what else he would wear in the summer either!

I really don't care to dictate what my husband wears on weekends and if they are cargo shorts, so be it. I would give him side eye if he tried to tell me what to wear.

I don't see a problem with cargo shorts. My dh would never wear preppy shorts. No bright colored, or shorts that hit mid thigh. He likes knee length shorts, cargo or flat front.

I don’t mind cargo shorts. I still think they are a great option, especially for men of my vintage. The printed shorts and rolled cuff shorts shown in the article would be great on a teenager or a guy in his 20’s & 30’s, but IMO guys my age and older would look a bit silly in them. The “street casual” shorts in the article are great, they’re more like cargo shorts but without the pockets.
