Oh, how I WISH my BF would wear cargos! He has two pairs of athletic shorts in his favorite team's colors, and wears them non-stop. They're comfy, I suppose. Hideous but comfy. He only wears them around the house, though. He's a former college lineman as well, and maybe a tad bit bowlegged.

cargo shorts really don't bother me - but do NOT wear them with high socks!!! or any kind of shorts with high socks actually but dh looks fine in his cargo shorts. My son (20) can get away with the preppy shorts but I think they would look weird on dh High socks are all the girls around here wear. And they wear them with flip flops and crocs! Not something I would do, but the girls love the look!
well now it is a bit of a double standard. For girls it's a fashionable to have high socks - for men/boys its just BAAAAAD!!!!!!!!

My sons and husband wear cargo shorts and shorts with the same material but no side pockets. I have never seen those preppy shorts where I shop but then I don't go into teen shops. My guys do not have the body shape shown in the photos (well, my older son is skinny but would never go preppy). They are also not into bright colours or even plaid.
To tell the truth, I have a couple of cargo shorts and they are my favourite ones. I can put my slim wallet in one pocket and my phone in the other and I don't need a purse. I hate purses and never carry one. If my things aren't in my pants they are in my coat.
To tell you the truth, skinny jeans never made it into our house either. And my boys never went for the pants hanging down, only the ones that fit at their waist. They are not fashion followers. Both of them hated regular jeans until they were in high school.

Chubbies with a capital C...www.chubbiesshorts.com "Sky's out, thighs out"
The American flag pair is a must for ANY frat boy. DD got her bf a pair of the tie dye ones, b/c he's definitely a prep, but with a touch of hippie. (Boarding school grad.)
i dressed my now 20 yo cargo wearing son in what we called "camp shorts." Plain, elastic waistband. I remember him having a navy pair by Polo.
I love the preppy look! The boys in the link are super cute to me!

My DH is ex-military and LOVES his cargo shorts so he can carry all of his "stuff", whatever that is, lol. I did ask him if he would get some dressier ones for when we go out. This past weekend, he found a pair of plaid and a pair of pinstripe (really fine lines) cargo shorts and thought they were just great. They look better than the khaki ones at least, lol.
When I drop off and pick up my DD at the high school, I see all different styles of shorts. I do love the guys that wear the bright colors and patterns on theirs with the deck shoes. It brings back a lot of good memories of the 80s for me.

Am I the only one giggling every time those shorts are referred to as "chubbies"? But whatever do you mean? Even the guys that designed them don't get it - Quote from the article I linked earlier. uhh yeah right Montgomery we believe you!!! Is Montgomery even you're real name? I think you are some old guy named Ralph trying to pull a fast one!

Cargo shorts are a big thing here in southern Oregon. I can look at 10 men and 9 of them will be wearing cargo shorts. If you go into most stores here there will be more cargo shorts for sale than any other kind of mens shorts.

I live near Chicago and I probably see every variation of shorts guys are wearing. I don't really care one way or the other- but I think all clothing should do two things: flatter your body type and work with your lifestyle. It's clothing- it serves you- not the other way around. The author of the article in the OP is flat out ridiculous. He's one of those writers trying to make his personal opinion 'a thing'. He's attracting buzz with his outrageous statements. Most of the guys I see, young and old- are still wearing cargo shorts. AND they are still the type of shorts predominatly sold in men's depts at stores around me. Why is that? Because guys are still wearing them. And why are they wearing them? They're comfortable, they're functional and most guys look good in them. (Most of the guys in my family wear them, and look good.) Why does one style have to be better than the other? Why take pot shots at the wearers of the style you don't prefer? What's the point? Very well said, thank you My dh would look silly in anything preppy or metro, it's just not who he is. So cargo and athletic shorts it is for him. But my dd's boyfriend looks good in preppy and metro.

I would love to see the guys in my life wear a preppy look.....not happening. They wear athletic shorts around home and cargo, golf, and typical khakis outside the house. I have banned all "jorts" though. I could have typed this. Shopping earlier in the year, I stopped and asked my DYS about a pair of whale shorts and he looked at me like I had 2 heads. I wouldn't mind if my boys including the DH prepped up a little bit. Heck, my DH wear 3/4 length. They haven't been in styles for like 20 years and I first noticed him because of his shorts and muscular thighs!!!

OH Lord I just looked at the Chubbies site. If you pull up the Americas Chubbies, I'm friends with the 2nd guy from the right in the photo. I still say they look like boxer shorts and DH refers to them as Ranger panties.

I have never seen any of their friends in shorts like those. We are in the Northeast though, so maybe it is regional. Younger DS is the anti-establishment dresser. Nothing with logos or considered designer. He wears mostly plain ts from Old Navy with cargo shorts (although some are plaid or different colors). Older DS is a total prep and always has been. He occasionally wears cargos, but not much anymore. Most of his clothes are Gap, Banana Republic, or Polo. He wears the funky colored, flat front khakis, but they are a longer length. Most of them are probably knee length or close to it and not skinny fit. He wears them with a button down and Sperrys. Of course, both of them are also over 6 ft tall with athletic builds. I think those other shorts would look silly on them.

When I was in college in the 80's, the girls would buy brightly patterned boxer shorts and wear them rolled up as regular shorts. When I saw the Chubbies site, I immediately thought of that.

The boys in my house would rather go naked before wearing cargo shorts. I could probably add denim to that list as well. Colorful shorts-yes. Red is a favorite around here. Shorts that have little prints of sailboats or bicycles or whales or whatever, yes. Shorts rolled up to create a cuff? I've seen it. I think it's weird, but whatever. Plaid? No way. I see the boys in colored shorts, a long sleeved button down polo shirt with the sleeves rolled up and boat shoes. They look like 1983 all over again. But no cargos. Never the cargo. ROFLMAO! My ds reacts to denim shorts in the store as if they carry the plague. It's quite hilarious.

those shorts look way too much like boxers to me, too... they might be popular around Phx in the younger generation (I can't believe I just wrote that, lol) but my BF wouldn't wear them.

I think there is a difference in what is in style between teenagers and grown men. Any grown men I know would not be caught dead in some of the shorts that are "in style" now. It's a trend, and one that I don't think is necessary to follow to be well dressed. We should dress in what makes us feel good, fits well and what WE like.

I'm thinking regional too.
I live in a suburb of Seattle. I read this thread this morning and have never seen the shorts pictured in those pictures. I went school shopping with my 14 year old son last week and didn't see even a hint of these types of shorts.
Today I spent the entire day in Seattle and looked at every man from the Seattle Center to Westlake Center to Pike Place Market. I did not see even one instance of shorts with patterns other than plaid, any short above the knee, or any shorts that were tight. I didn't even see shorts that weren't neutral (khaki, black, olive, grey) Well, besides the plaid ones. Given that the vast majority of people I saw today were likely tourists, still didn't see them. Most shorts fell into three categories; cargo, flat front, and athletic.
I find the whole thing very interesting- that the style could be so drastically different. Just our of curiosity, where are the people from that are seeing these shorts as trendy in their area?

I hate cargo shorts especially if the pockets are stuffed to the brim with crap, they look like lazy dressing to me. I love the hipster style of clothing, it's cute and different. Sadly my attempts to persuade the husband to dress like a hipster have been met with disdain and we live in Ireland so really no shorts ever unless you want frost bitten knee caps! What is an average temperature for an August day? Just curious. We are usually in the 80's in Colorado.

I think they aren't for older men. Isn't there a fashion rule that if you wore it the first time around don't the second/third/forth.... although they tend to remind me of bad golfing gear...

If my DH didn't wear cargo shorts, where would he keep his wallet, car keys, phone, the toddler's sippy cup, a few small toys, half a box of Kleenex, and probably an apple or yoghurt? His pockets rival Mary Popppins' carpet bag!!

I moved my freshman into his dorm today. I did an extensive look at the men's shorts for research. Mostly long sports types, cargo second, other various flat fronted styles, and no chubbies or jean shorts. I know the kids come from all over the US, so lots of places were probably represented. Now the dads were a crap shoot, but most of the dads were in pants. It was in the 60's today. I am guessing it is regional dress and that is the way it has probably always been.

Both my boys informed me over the summer that "noooooooooo, we will not wear cargos." Oldest wears plain khakis for work and basketball shorts at home. Youngest DS wears whatever his sister tells him to wear. LOL He is a college freshman this years. So yeah, chubbies, rugby shorts, t-shirts, izods, flip flops, boat shoes. Around the house, compression shorts, basketball shorts and tshirts. He used to do the plaid short and will not do the whale/palm tree/whatever embroidered shorts. We will see if that changes after one semester. Oh and he loves his salmon shorts with a teal shirt.
DH wears coral, yellow chubbie-like khakis. Or plain khakis. Nike/Northface gym type shorts around the house. He would wear short shorts if I let him. I told him those days are long gone.

What I wish is that DH wouldn't wear the ones that are just too baggy and sloppy looking. He has a couple of pairs that are in between overly baggy and tailored golf that I'm OK with. He has skinny legs, so a little bulk is OK for him, but I think a lot of the cargos oversize the shorts leg already, then add the massive pockets. It just looks bad to me. As long as he doesn't wear them for date night, I'll live.

M'eh. DH will be woefully out of style then. He has a few pairs. I finally got him to agree to trying a smaller size and whaddya know? They look better! He did have a pair of preppier looking shorts but he managed to ruin them so they're now "mowing" shorts. He is slim so the really baggy look makes him look like he's a kid wearing his Dad's clothes. Getting him to agree to shopping is almost as bad as convincing my 13 year old to go shopping. My boys will never be in style. DS1 idolizes his Dad and is dressing almost exactly like him, cargo shorts and all. DS2 lives in basketball/athletic shorts despite not being athletic at all. I'm just happy he matches his clothes for the most part.
