This thread is such a perfect example of the variety here!

Colorful shorts-yes. Red is a favorite around here. ***NO Shorts that have little prints of sailboats or bicycles or whales or whatever, yes. ***NO Shorts rolled up to create a cuff? I've seen it. I think it's weird, but whatever. ***And, NO Ha ha! The only time you will see my DH wearing red or blue shorts is if he's wearing a swimsuit and floating in the lake. He would not be caught dead wearing shorts with with little prints. As in, not EVER. And cuffed? Again, no. Just no. I would say probably 1/4 of his shorts are cargo type shorts, half are denim that he wears for work when it's hot and he's going to be outside, and the rest are flat front in khaki, olive green or brown. He's definitely no fashionista, but if he was he sure wouldn't be with me! We live in jeans and t-shirts here.

well, I scrolled all the way down to the bottom, and the overwhelming winner on the reactions is 'fail' so I'm guessing most people think the idea of getting rid of the cargo shorts is hooey.
I think they (cargo shorts) look fine, but then, what do I know?
ETA: trying to picture what my BF would say if I brought him a pair of red shorts with sailboats on-- hahaha!!! He would rather get a root canal without Novacaine!
And did anyone notice that all the photos in that article were of twenty-something guys who were all very fit and trim? My BF isn't exactly fit; none of those shorts would look good on him.

My teens would get punched in the face the minute they walked in school with bright colored shorts or shorts with little whales. Square between the eyes. Actually, they'd most likely get it before then, I can just imagine the hysterical laughter if any of them walked out of their room. That just wouldn't fly around here. I just asked dh if he would wear them and I won't repeat his answer but it's a no! ha.
Cargo shorts it is, but the kids said 'not the Jack Hannah kind, the more casual ones.

Oh...I should probably also say that the really slim fitting tight shorts are not something I see. These are mostly what I am talking about: chubbies and polos (the shirts are tucked or untucked depending on mood more than event.)

SO wouldn't be caught dead wearing cargo shorts. I think he owns almost the entire J Crew catalog though.

Preppy doesn't go over well here. When half the male student body wears Wranglers and the other half wears shorts with knee socks (with one down at the ankle, natch) you're not going to find any of them in shorts with whales on them.

You know you get to a point in your life where you know that life is short and WHO THE HELL CARES if someone doesn't like your shorts. That's their problem. It's just another way of someone trying to knock someone else down and jump on them.

DH pretty much only wears cargo shorts. He did own some denim, but they got trashed shortly after we moved in together and I took over the laundry!

My DH wears cargo shorts all the time and they work for him with his age and body type. If he ever came out dressed in any of those other ensembles, we'd be taking separate cars.

I think it's just a personality thing. My DH wouldn't be caught dead in red shorts or shorts with little sailboats on them. He was a college linebacker and still is built like one with huge shoulders and legs and a growly persona to match (he is actually a teddy bear but shhhh I didn't tell you that). I actually think the bulk of the pockets in cargo shorts balance out his top half. He is just a big guy. And as we have established in many threads, different clothes look good on different people. This is my son, except he only played in HS. I can't even imagine him wearing a pair of short shorts with sailboats on them. Not since he was 4 anyway. It is what the teens that are into fashion wear around here. But then, where would DS put his book? His guide to buying a pair of shorts is 1. Are they cargo shorts and 2. Can they fit a full sized hardback book in the pocket.

Well, if my man had abs like the dude wearing the insanely bright & ugly yellow shorts in the article, well I might be persuaded.
attended a geocaching event weekend and the cargos were on both men, women, & kids because of practicality.

They're kind of like the male version of mom jeans, IMO. I agree, and yes dh wears them. 34 yr old ds does not wear them.

This is the sort of thing that I find absolutely fascinating about two peas.
My two male reference points are DS, 14 and DH, 49. DS wears athletic shorts or shorts in a ripstop nylon material but in neutral colors. DH fully embraces the cargo short, in either khaki or navy.
I have to admit that I haven't paid total attention to older teens and twentysomethings in our area, but I really haven't seen anything around here (central NJ/Jersey shore) like the outfits in the pictures that were linked. Maybe I'm just moving in the wrong circles?

Neither my husband or son wear cargo pants.
My husband wears flat front kaki shorts.
My son wears preppy shorts.

Is it wrong that I thought of this movie quote when I read the post title, "nobody's gotten a hand job in cargo shorts since 'nam."

Almost all those alternatives looked incredibly gay. NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT! (In my Seinfeld voice) But seriously, I mean it. If I'm unfashionable for thinking no hetero man over, say, 18 should have rolled cuffs on his too-tight jean shorts, so be it. If he's gay, that's different. He can probably pull that look off then.

I think women cracking on the shorts men wear is no different than men cracking on what women wear. Wear what you like; make sure you look in the mirror and decide if you look the way you want. My kids love the long sports shorts. My youngest does wear plaid, or cargo, or just nice non pleated shorts. I think he always looks nice in any of them. No biggie to me.

It was so wrong when I was growing up but kids seem to want to wear the opposite of what their parents wear so… My boys don't like that style, but my oldest wears some pretty awesome short socks that most young men wouldn't wear. I only wear fun socks, so he might have gotten that from me.

I think fit makes a bigger difference than style... A well fitting pair of cargos on a guy can look good... If they're a poor fit, worn/dirty looking, or sloppy looking then it looks like no effort was put in... But the same would be true about overly tight, sloppy big, or dingy flat fronts... Effort is what's sexy...
I've never heard men's shorts called chubbies before... Considering the meaning of that word around here I can't imagine I'll ever utter the phrase, "nice chubbies"...

I can think of two students I know who wear the preppy look. Cargos for the rest of them.
You really need to be a thin male to pull off the look for most of those shorts.
And many are too short. Nobody wants to see man-thigh on most occasions.

Cargo shorts (NOT jean shorts) is just about all DH wears, so if they are bad, I guess he's a fashion don't. I see men EVERYWHERE wearing them as well. What the heck else are they supposed to wear, if jean shorts are out, too??? That's the fashion issue. If everyone is wearing them how could they possibly be cool?

I hate cargo shorts especially if the pockets are stuffed to the brim with crap, they look like lazy dressing to me. I love the hipster style of clothing, it's cute and different. Sadly my attempts to persuade the husband to dress like a hipster have been met with disdain and we live in Ireland so really no shorts ever unless you want frost bitten knee caps!

The guys in my family would not be caught dead in skin tight short-shorts. Since cargo shorts are the alternative, that is generally what they wear. I'm not really sure why people allow some nobody to dictate what they wear. If the nobody wants to wear skin tight short-shorts and skinny jeans, he should go right ahead. By the same token, he should not be shaming others for their choices.
