My son is in his mid-twenties and will wear some of those other shorts. I think the men in the last picture look ridiculous.
It's trendy and what's in right now. I don't really give too much thought to it, but not everyone would look good in the skinnier shorts, so it's great to have options.

My DH and my 13 year old son would wear a garbage bag if I laid it out for them. They don't care one bit for fashion, buying or picking out their clothes for the day. I buy what I like and they wear it. I buy cargo, printed plaid colored all types of shorts and solid polo shirts or t shirts. No jean shorts but in the winter they wear jeans or khakis.

My son has also made the switch from cargo to preppie! He even has a paid of seersucker ones which I think are hideous that he wears with a button down white Vineyard Vines shirt and what I call dock shoes. Yep, 1980's preppie all over again.

I don’t mind cargo shorts. I still think they are a great option, especially for men of my vintage. The printed shorts and rolled cuff shorts shown in the article would be great on a teenager or a guy in his 20’s & 30’s, but IMO guys my age and older would look a bit silly in them. The “street casual” shorts in the article are great, they’re more like cargo shorts but without the pockets. Like your "vintage" comment DH is a big guy, with great legs and he wears cargos. Some of the colored preppy styles make older guys look older, probably not the look they intended. We have a white haired friend who sports red ones. DS(s) wear both, depending on activity. Cargos for hiking and camping. One's total prep otherwise, the other more skater.

We live in a pretty outdoorsy area most men who are wearing shorts are also dressing to hike, or bike or be outdoors.
So I see a lot of flat fronted slimmer cut khakis but not the preppy colored shorts in the article.
I do see a lot of cargos. I don't mind them. Seriously the next buzz feed will be Men who shouldn't wear slim cut tight shorts.
There is no winning. So wear what you want.

Given that the alternatives shown are ugly af, I'm pretty good with the cargo shorts.

Oh...I should probably also say that the really slim fitting tight shorts are not something I see. These are mostly what I am talking about: chubbies and polos (the shirts are tucked or untucked depending on mood more than event.) I never see that look around here. It does make me flash back to 1983!!!

I would fall over laughing if my 6'5", 280 pound husband walked out of the closet in slim fit red shorts or with little boats on them He is normally mistaken for being in his 20s, is a great looking man with amazing legs and rear. But no. He rocks his cargo shorts and long athletic shorts.

it has got to be a regional thing
the boys around here would walk naked before they wore seersucker aqua shorts...and something embroidered? for the love of pete...no way in hell
i guess we need an article written eschewing the preppy trend...written by a guy that lives in the sticks
and to be honest...when you gals say your men would rather be naked then wear what our husbands wear...well that stings a bit
cos honestly - i wouldn't be with a man that wore flat front pink shorts - with rolled up long sleeves and deck shoes
so i guess it goes both ways - i just wouldn't say it outloud

Teenagers are funny about their fashion and there are likely regional differences within that. What I was describing is the look for where we are. My older son went off to college and that is the look for the boys on campus there. It is just what they know.

Both DH and DS have thicker thighs, muscular, so I don't think the more fitted shorts would look good on them. I also don't think either one would where them. DH likes his cargo shorts because he can carry the few items he needs with him, phone wallet and all in one tool for work. I think the chubbies look strange, like they are too short, but that is how they are meant to be. As others have said, where what you are comfortable in, who really cares what some random person on the internet thinks. ETA - This just popped up in the ads on my Facebook page Chubbies Article

But you just did, didn't you?
Honestly I see it here all the time (and in IRL too); people can't just like what they like without lobbing blatant or veiled insults at people who like different things. I mean really...why? Frankly, I love how much more free style is than when I was growing up. It seemed like only very specific things were in style (jean cut, skirt length) and everything else was out. Now people can wear a variety of things that are specific to THEIR personal style and not just the trends that are out there.
I said before (but my post disappeared), my middle ds (19) hates cargo shorts and wears flat front shorts, and yes, he does go with some bright colors and patterns. I don't think he would wear shorts as tight and short as those pictured, but I'm not sure they would would for his body type. If they did, he might wear them. He's got more of the hipster thing going on. My oldest ds is more plain in his dress style, but he really hates baggy ultra-casual stuff and wouldn't wear cargoes either. My 51 year-old dh, he has some cargo and some flat-front shorts--he's not too picky. I live in Northeast Ohio and the school district we live in is kind of preppy. I would say that I see more of the flat front shorts than the cargoes on young people here but I definitely agree it is a regional thing as well as an age and body type thing. Wear what makes you feel good!

You're doing the exact same thing. The thing is...it's discussion. I *could* say I think camo makes you look like a backwoods hick. I don't. It's rude and it's just my opinion.

I don't love cargo shorts for my husband, as I think they make him look heavier than he is. They look too heavy and bulky to me, so I personally prefer just a simple, flat front short. He likes cargos, though, and they certainly aren't verboten around these parts from what I can tell.

It all depends on context.

I live near Chicago and I probably see every variation of shorts guys are wearing. I don't really care one way or the other- but I think all clothing should do two things: flatter your body type and work with your lifestyle. It's clothing- it serves you- not the other way around.
The author of the article in the OP is flat out ridiculous. He's one of those writers trying to make his personal opinion 'a thing'. He's attracting buzz with his outrageous statements. Most of the guys I see, young and old- are still wearing cargo shorts. AND they are still the type of shorts predominatly sold in men's depts at stores around me. Why is that? Because guys are still wearing them. And why are they wearing them? They're comfortable, they're functional and most guys look good in them. (Most of the guys in my family wear them, and look good.)
Why does one style have to be better than the other? Why take pot shots at the wearers of the style you don't prefer? What's the point?

There is **no way** my DH would wear brightly colored, slim-fitting, rolled shorts half way up his thigh- especially in a print. (The half way up his thigh part would actually make him gasp.) Just wouldn't happen.
But they'd be cute on my 8 yr old!

I would love to see the guys in my life wear a preppy look.....not happening. They wear athletic shorts around home and cargo, golf, and typical khakis outside the house. I have banned all "jorts" though.

DH wears cargo's sometimes and I think he looks hot in them. I don't see anything wrong with them. Now, I probably would if he started stuffing crap in his pockets making them bulge out, but most guys don't. DS is 20 and wears some of the hipper shorts and looks great, but he's also 6' and weighs about 150. You need a slim build to be able to pull them off and let's face it, most men over 30 just don't have it.

Cargo shorts (NOT jean shorts) is just about all DH wears, so if they are bad, I guess he's a fashion don't. I see men EVERYWHERE wearing them as well. What the heck else are they supposed to wear, if jean shorts are out, too??? We were just at the beach and I saw a ton of men with cargo shorts, jean shorts, etc.. My husband has some plaid shorts and solid color shorts from Kohls. He fits right in. I say wear whatever works for you!

cargo shorts really don't bother me - but do NOT wear them with high socks!!! or any kind of shorts with high socks actually but dh looks fine in his cargo shorts. My son (20) can get away with the preppy shorts but I think they would look weird on dh High socks are all the girls around here wear. And they wear them with flip flops and crocs! Not something I would do, but the girls love the look!

Almost all those alternatives looked incredibly gay. NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT! (In my Seinfeld voice) But seriously, I mean it. If I'm unfashionable for thinking no hetero man over, say, 18 should have rolled cuffs on his too-tight jean shorts, so be it. If he's gay, that's different. He can probably pull that look off then. Thanks for saying what I was thinking! When I looked at the pics in that link, honestly the first thought that popped into my head was, "The only person I know who can rock that look is my skinny 35 year old gay nephew." But I also don't run with a very fashion forward crowd either, so there's that!

I see a lot of cargo shorts on men over 40.
Under 40, I see a lot of seersucker, plaid, and colored shorts.
Teens seem to wear board shorts or the long athletic loose fit fabric shorts.
I have only seen one young man in preppy attire including shorts with little whales on them. He came into a store and I swear everyone stopped and stared because that's just so unusual around here given that many of the guys are wearing John Deere tractor baseball hats.
As long as they are not the obscenely tight bright colored bike shorts, I don't care. We have one old dude (old as in at least 75) who comes into our store every week who wears them. I mean, I now know the guy is not circumcised and I should not know this information. My eyes!
