Thank you for sharing your seahorses here. I have always found the way they swim fascinating. Amazing creatures.

I didn't open this thread when you first posted because for some reason I thought it would be about some disgusting insect or something. But after seeing the posts adding up I decided to take a chance and oh my I am so glad I did. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing with us.

Just wanted to echo many others in saying thank you for sharing this saga with us - fascinating. So have you named him/her yet? Since you won't know the sex for quite a while (right?), perhaps a unisex name...like Pat? Hope the little bugger makes it. It's like our pea mascot at this point.

You could also name on Pony Boy! That is a cute name for a seahorse.
You can also tell me to go feed that to a goat!

How long do seahorses sleep in the day or night?

That's a tough question. They are not very active critters. During the day, they are often as still as statues. They stare at a spot where they saw a bit of food for HOURS on end. Hard to say if they are awake, asleep or comatose!!! I have all of my tanks on timers. The seahorse tank comes on at 10 a.m. and goes off at 10 p.m. I used to have their tank in my bedroom, which was WAY cool because I would fall asleep at night looking at seahorses. I had to move it though, because EVERYONE who comes to the house wants to see the seahorses, and since I rarely make my bed, my room isn't exactly company friendly, lol. They needed to move to the bigger tank anyway, when the boys came out of quarantine, so everyone is much happier this way. I can always put a seahorse video on the TV. Here is a wonderful one. These are NOT my ponies in the video, but it's so well done, that I love to share it. Seahorse Video by Kim S. Hansen

Is he past the critical stage? He sure got big! Thanks for the update! well...I would like to think so, but I still don't like the way he's acting. When he's not eating, he's laying on the bottom of the tank. He should be hitching onto things with his tail. I'm just taking it day by day for now.

I also find this very fascinating. Our local aquarium has a seahorse exhibit and I believe the caretaker of them has been working a bit with the ponies. I believe the information sheet mentions something like 1/1000 ponies born in the wild survives. I knew they were difficult and had to be burped ect but I didn't realize they were *so* sensitive.
The ones at the aquarium frequently "snuggle" is that a normal behavior for them and how they play?
Do only the males get bulbous abdomens, and does that mean they are currently pregnant?
When we were in Hawaii I saw that there was a Seahorse Farm on the Big Island. Have you ever been to a breeding facility or anything like that in the past? Did yours come from here? Their brochure mentioned they were the largest provider I believe in the US of seahorses.

I read the same figure...1 out of every 1000 survives. The snuggling is a mating behavior. It's very endearing to watch. My males are quite a bit younger than my females...and they look just like teenage boys trying to impress the girls. They snuggle up next to them, and the girls look down their noses at them and ignore them. Then the males give them a whack with their heads and strut around the tank. Noses down, fins raised. Cruisin' for chicks, lol.
In most varieties the male is the only one who gets the bulbous abdomen. There is however, a potbelly variety that I've seen. It can be a sign of pregnancy, but it can also be pouch emphysema...where the male develops air bubbles in his pouch. When the bubble gets too big, he floats at the top, helpless. The first time I saw it, I thought for sure he was a goner, but he's been burped several times now, and I've washed out his pouch with antibiotics, and he seems fine.
I've never been to a breeding facility, but I would love to see one. My females came to me as adults-I purchased them from someone on Craigslist. The boys came from a facility in Florida. It took them three days to arrive, and I was a nervous wreck. They were much smaller than I expected, and the "mated pair" that I had ordered turned out to both be males, but it's all been fine since.

Here is a brief video of him. The little swimmers that you see are his lunch-baby brine shrimp. About half way through, you see me setting a spice jar next to the tank. When he was born, he was about the size of the "P" in "Chili Powder" Primus at 2 weeksOH EMM GEE! I want to hug him and keep him and call him Pickles.

I'm sad to report that Primus died last night. He had stopped eating yesterday-no idea why.
It does appear that both Tristan and Dunstan are pregnant, so we may be opening the nursery again soon.

RIP Primus, and best bracing thoughts for the pony-feeder-carer. I appreciate the update and will be hoping to see more from the nursery. The experience you gained will serve you well .

So, do you know who the proud parents are? The momma is Widget, but the boys are too hard to tell apart. The next batch will also be Widget's, as you can see from the video, there's been some hanky panky in the tank. I really need to give the boys a better look over now that they are older and see if I can find some way to tell them apart. Poppet has mask like markings around her eyes that stay the same no matter what color she changes to. The boys are both brown and white striped at the moment. Wait... they change colors? Like chameleons? When the OP first posted this thread I opened it, looked, said "oh cool", went to work and promptly forgot. Then this morning I noticed it was six pages so I thought "hmm... I'd better see what's happened to cause it to go to six pages. (because around here you never know... ). Well this has been SUCH an interesting thread. I've always been fascinated by seahorses but know almost nothing about them. And I'm sad about Primus. Maybe some from the next batch will make it.
