I really liked The Big Sick and Wonder Woman. I normally don't see comic book movies, but my daughter and I liked Spiderman.
But my most recent movie was Girl's Trip and I loved it. It is raunchy and not for everybody (although I saw it with a rabbi and a rector [sounds like the beginning of a joke, but am serious, lol] and they both liked it), but I found it hilarious. And the non comedy bits were good too. Sometimes funny movies lose momentum in between the jokes, but this one was strong all the way through.

We saw The Glass Castle today. We were surprised by how much we liked it. Now I want to read the book. Definitely read the book. I went to see this with my book club--we all read the book. Most of us enjoyed it but we all felt it sanitized to some extent what those kids really went through. It was much more awful in the book--the horrible conditions they lived in, the near starvation, the bullying at school. And we also felt like the mom was whitewashed a bit. They made the dad look awful and the mom was the long-suffering martyr. This wasn't how she was presented in the book; she was pretty awful. He had his alcoholism and she had her narcissism and mental health issues.

I just watched Gleason on Amazon Prime. It is the story of Steve Gleason and his battle with ALS. He played for the Saints and retired then was diagnosed shortly after with ALS. He and his wife found out shortly after his diagnosis that they were expecting a baby. His story is amazing and heartbreaking.

I watched the movie Her on Demand the other day. It was interesting. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 95%.
Here is the synopsis: A sensitive and soulful man earns a living by writing personal letters for other people. Left heartbroken after his marriage ends, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) becomes fascinated with a new operating system which reportedly develops into an intuitive and unique entity in its own right. He starts the program and meets "Samantha" (Scarlett Johansson), whose bright voice reveals a sensitive, playful personality. Though "friends" initially, the relationship soon deepens into love.

Thanks Cadoodle, that does sound good and your endorsement seals it We saw Wind River this weekend, not quite for the faint of heart but I wanted to see it anyway because Jeremy Renner. There was some sharp violence I wasn't prepared for but it is just, an excellent movie, even giving it a shove into reality with some statistics on these types of crimes at the end. That's all. Recommend. Layce

I saw Annabelle: The Creation
It was pretty good...a scary/suspenseful movie without the gore (one small and very brief gore scene but not too bad)
It tied it well to the first Annabelle movie

We watched Patriots Day last night on DVD. It was really good. I was very emotionally engrossed and even teared up in places. I highly recommend it.

He had his alcoholism and she had her narcissism and mental health issues. I was going to do a review of the movie and felt the same way! The mother was extremely selfish and it seemed like there was some sort of mental illness, lower IQ thing going on. She lived/continues to live in her own fantasy world. I didn't like how the different areas they lived in before West Virginia were glossed over. Their time in Battle Mountain, Nevada and Arizona were incredibly crazy. I also remember being moved by how Jeanette did make a friend in West Virginia who came from a "normal" family in town. They had a house with running water and electricity and I think the dad was in management in the mine. It seemed like they had an idea about her family situation and showed her kindness. Also, at the end of the book Jeanette said they didn't know where Maureen was; somewhere in California the last time they heard from her. I found it strange they said nothing about her at the end of the movie. I wanted to add, it was the first time I went to a movie theater with reclining seats. I had back surgery about 2 1/2 months ago and it was awesome. I was able to sit through most of it without feeling too uncomfortable.

Saw LION on The Movie Network Saturday evening. I really enjoyed it. It was kind'a slow but still told an interesting, true, story. The ending was really touching. I loved seeing the real Saroo and his mothers, and pictures of him as a small boy.
On a side note, I have difficulty watching Nicole Kidman in anything she does. I find her face/teeth, and the ugly wigs she wears, really distracting.

They had the mom on a news spot, and she really came across as a truly heinous person in just the few seconds she was on.

We saw Wind River today. A movie about an FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) and a local tracker (Jeremy Renner) who probe a murder at a Native American reservation. It was a very good, if brutal, movie. If you have ever been a victim of sexual assault, this is not the movie for you. Fun fact: Elizabeth Olsen is the sister of the famous twins Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, and learned the ropes of acting by hanging around the set of Full House.

I rented the power rangers movie. Oh so bad and yet we had fun watching it.
I rented a couple of others and they were so bad I can't remember them.

Thanks for your review, cadoodlebug. I thought about seeing this in the theater, but I think I will pass because of the violence. I will likely watch it at home, though. Interesting fun fact about Elizabeth Olsen!
I saw All Saints with John Corbett of the Greek Weddings and a few other movies. This is a faith-based movie about a priest who tries to save his church. Nice and feel good and based on a true story. Enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. But not that memorable.

Just got home from seeing Stephen King's IT. It was actually better than I thought it was going to be. The kids were terrific and there were some laugh-out-loud moments. Now where is that clown smilie....

I saw IT on Sunday. I enjoyed the movie for what it was. I didn't find Pennywise as creepy as the first movie but he was more horrific. It's only chapter one and only focused on the their childhood. Like the first movie there were several themes present in the book that was not touched on at all in the movie. My friend even admitted she had forgotten about those parts of the book till I brought them up. Then we googled them and she was like "oh yeah".

IT was a amazing. The ending wasn't too great but the child actors and how they interacted was awesome. It was a large audience which made it fun. I only genuinely jumped twice and no bad dreams....

DH and I went to see Logan Lucky this past weekend. Eh, it was ok. Not one I would watch again and it wasn't as funny as DH expected it to be. I was kind of disappointed because we don't go see movies often and when we go, I want the movie to be GREAT! lol

cadoodlebug, did you get one of those Movie Pass things? I'm curious how it works and if you've found local theaters to use it at (I'm in your area as well). My DD who attends UC Davis ordered one a few days ago.
