What I don't understand is how he repeatedly makes comments like that and gets a free pass. Why? If any other candidate had made even one derogatory comment, well, the media would be all over them. The media is all over him. And people who do not support him find it highly offensive. But people who DO support him generally agree with him and cheer him on. He is saying exactly what his supporters want to hear. The question is – do enough people agree with him to give him a win in November?

So you are saying one shouldn't be honest? Interesting. No, I'm saying that adults should be able to have conversations without belittling others. Interesting that you equate belittling with being honest. That is all that Donald Trump does – he constantly belittles others. He is a master at it. He is setting the example for all of us…

To be honest, I think that talking about Trump without belittling him, perhaps even his voters, is like fighting with one hand behind your back. Speaking politely about it just gets you shouted down, or ... belittled! Ask the other 16 Republican wannabes. But I do apologize for labeling you a Trump supporter, if you aren't really. You really just keep illustrating my point. I would say the same thing for Clinton or Sanders supporters. Really? I wasn't arguing with you. But whatever.

I am not a Trump support. I actually said in a previous post that I plan to curl up in the fetal position and cry in November. I do not like any of the candidates. I actually own a shirt that says Fallon/Timberlake 2016. My point is that with all the belittling people are doing to Trump supporters, it is highly unlikely that a civilized conversation with a Trump supporter will occur. I like to have respectful conversations, even with people with different views than mine. Apparently, you don't. Why is it bad if a regular person tells it like it is, using the word stupid, but when Trump says crap like this he's Mr Awesome? I've heard "he just says what we're thinking" countless times. He regularly calls people stupid so it must be ok for everyone else. There no longer will be respectful conversations, that when out the door when Trump opened it. everyone but me is stupidSaveSaveI never said that. I don't think anyone should call anyone else stupid. It my not be possible to have a respectful conversation with Trump, but I do think that people on a message board should be able to have a respectful conversation with each other.

Typical liberal bullshit "think like I think or else you must be stupid." It's amazing how intolerant the self-appointed tolerant ones are. Of course that tolerance only extends to people who think like they do. And it's amazing how people who are such hypocrites themselves can point the finger at somebody else. I'm out of here.nobody here is the least bit interested in understanding anything about the other side. Posts like this are done only so that they can continue to tell those who don't think like they do have stupid ,uninformed and wrong they are. Can I ask why you are voting for him? Most people I hear who are voting for him say they are voting for him so they don't vote for Hilary. Is that your reason or are you voting for policy etc?

Can't we just stop all this and start trying to understand the way that people we disagree with are thinking? FFS, we might find out we all want a lot of the same things, but we're never going to know if all everyone is doing is sinking to the the "he/she said it first" or "if they do it, I'm going to do it too" level. It's rampant on BOTH sides and it needs to stop.

Political discussions are always like dynamite around here, but I think we're seeing new levels of low this time around. And I do think it's because Trump is that polarizing, and I think he loves it because he's right in the middle of it, and it feeds his ego (or empty, hollow soul or whatever). But I really would like to hear from people who think he's a good candidate or a 'safer' vote. I really do want to try and understand why they think so and have a discussion about it all without it degenerating into a pea circus. I think I had set my sights too high and will have to find that kind of discussion somewhere else.

Trump calls American-born judge ‘a Mexican,’ points out ‘my African American’ at a rally wapo.st/20YawWdIt's like he's trying to be as offensive as possible so people HAVE to vote for Hillary...the more outrageous he becomes, the more it looks to me like the Clintons and Trump are actually working together to get Hill in office.

I personally can't understand why anyone would vote for Trump, Clinton, or Sanders. I want new candidates to choose from. Unfortunately, the chance of my getting what I want is pretty much nil at this point. That's why we need to push for viability of the 3rd party candidates--to have more choices.

Until about 3 or 4 months ago, I thought the same thing, and it was all so ridiculous that it was still funny. Now, I see many people-way more than I did before- saying that they'd vote for him just to keep Hillary out of office, and I truly don't understand it. I also don't understand why all the other Republican politicians, governors, congresspeople, etc. who were so adamantly opposed to Trump before are now saying they'll support/vote for him. I would like to try to understand party loyalty that goes that far.

I don't get it either. I get not liking Hillary - my husband can't stand her. But he's going to hold his Reagan Democrat nose and vote for her because the thought of Trump having his finger on the nuclear trigger is terrifying. He's impulsive, irrational and stupid. He seriously could bring us to nuclear armageddon. I wish I was using hyperbole. You do realize that while he can call for a nuclear attack it takes two people to finalize the actual act. Also, there are numerous safe guards in place so a president can't throw a hot-headed temper tantrum and just push the button. I'm also talking about him pissing someone else off - someone who has nuclear weapons and is itchy to use them against us.

Like, say North Korea, or some place like Iran? What makes you think nuclear armageddon is only possible if the U.S. strikes first? I didn't say it was only possible if the U.S. struck first, I was simply replying to the comment about TRUMP pushing the button.

The fact that you had to list those safeguards as though they are a justification says a lot. It says I have enough common sense to know he can't start a war on a whim. I wasn't justifying anything, merely responding to a ridiculous comment.

I didn't think Peabay's post said it was about Trump pushing the button. Just that the possibility of him causing a nuclear armaggedon is very real. I'll have to go back and re-read. Does it not worry you that Trump would incite another country with an unstable leader to strike first (like N. Korea for example); with some of his insults, comments, threats, etc?

Because they're stupid, racist, homophobic, stupid, backwards, unAmerican, stupid, supremacist, uneducated, stupid, ethnocentric, xenophobic, stupid, lemmings, haters, simpleminded, gullible, stupid, chauvinistic, misogynistic, stupid, misanthropic. Did I miss any? (This is not my view of all the people who would vote for him, but what other direction could this thread possibly go? You're not really looking to understand it, are you?) You know, I really am trying to understand. I get that some people may vote for him just to keep Hilary out of office. Whatever. I disagree, but it is what it is. It's the people who actively support and like him as a nominee that I don't get. And there seem to be so many of them. I do think it's telling that so many are defensive about it. It's like they know they're doing something really wrong and don't feel good about it, but they're going to defend it as a great choice anyway. ONLY because it is you, Merge. Because I really do believe that you are so prejudiced on this that you are unable to understand what people who prefer Trump to Clinton or Sanders have already told you repeatedly for many, many months now. 1) A great many Trump supporters are extremely vocal about their choice. The fact that that's not true on this board is more representative of the politically left imbalance of this board than of the true nature of our country. 2) I'm older than you are. I can't remember a time when my political views have been considered anything but <insert @scrubologist 's list> in the national media and on this board. And the leader of that propaganda has been Hillary Clinton with her screeching "Right Wing Agenda" steaming pile of crap. 3) *IF* the Republicans had actually made a modicum of an attempt to defend themselves from the slander continually dripped out through the media & the Democratic pulpit over the past several decades, Trump would not stand out as FINALLY! THE EXCEPTION! (This is why there is a Rush Limbaugh & FOX News. The ClintonNewsNetwork and other media really was that one-sided back in the day. I used to use the way the news reported daily events in my curriculum with my children - this is a fact, this is an opinion, this is an opinion being presented as fact. Compare and contrast the actual words and actions of today's politicians with those in this story that we are reading that has a corrupt political system that is threatening our hero. Compare and contrast how the news is being reported in the story and in real life. It was an illuminating exercise, to say the least.) 4) 5) & 6) Trump represents so very, very, very many of us who are sick and tired of things the way they've been and aren't going to take it any more. 7) Yep, he's totally crude and rude and "not ready for prime time," EXCEPT... he's a proven master at creating must-see reality TV. The face he wears to generate constant attention. The enormous number of people who know the man behind the mask who respect and admire Trump as something much more than what he self-projects while garnering free advertising is a force unto itself that grounds the seemingly thin-skinned man into something much more foundationally stable than what is apparent. At his core, people believe this is a man who has a drive and determination to achieve that is extraordinary along with the focus and network to take his ideas and bring them into reality. Whatever has been incomprehensibly too difficult for others to do to actually secure our southern border seems like a completely doable objective when it comes to Trump. 8) Trump is not in bed with as many people as Hillary is. Even limiting the $'s to her world-changing, astronomically costly speeches and the amounts rolling in to the Clinton Foundation from coughcoughquestionablecoughcough sources from around the world, Trump falls far short of being the most bribable of the two. 9) Sincerely, you do not "get" how loathesome the very idea of having Hillary Clinton as our leader truly is. You do not "get" how she personally has belittled and insulted so very many people for so many years. Trump says something today and it's an immediate headline. Clinton says something for DECADES and it's nothing but a yawn. Comparing the many, many, many years of hearing her screech the rudest, crudest, most heart-felt and well-rehearsed insulting things to Trump's spontaneous, and often walked-back, off-the-cuff remarks throws that balance heavily against Clinton. The obvious fact that Trump has the full support of so many he has insulted is a stark contrast to the dismal lack of support for Hillary primary/caucus after primary/caucus after primary/caucus. While his support is genuine, her's is nothing but the result of a balloon of arrogantly false support propped up by a completely rigged & corrupt Democratic Party. 10) Trump does not represent the same deficits found in the traditional Republican Party platform. His change of heart about abortion is not unlike many who have lived to see the lives of those who may have been aborted but weren't, and yet his focus is not on making abortion increasingly more difficult to obtain. Likewise, it takes a real stretch of the imagination to believe that Trump will spend any energy on fighting the recent national changes in our marriage laws. It would be worth the price of admission to watch anyone try to pin a charge of not promoting women in the workforce against him, especially when their own records are far inferior. 11) The wild and unrestricted fear against Trump, that we (globally) will be atomically annihilated, somehow doesn't seem even the teensiest bit overdramatic to the same people who demand every blessed i dot and t cross before even considering to look at information that disagrees with their political position. "Why, I reject that rightwingpropagandasite as a source worth any consideration at all. Because. They are to the right of me politically and are therefore wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong." (Paraphrasing the exact words repeated here ad nauseum to the actual words I read when this excuse is pulled out again and again and again.) The vehemence in this fear has me rebelling against it to the point that I reject it as nothing more than Chicken Little. By several orders of magnitude, I am far more considerate of the idea that Hillary Clinton would lead us into a World War than Trump would. That's the difference in danger I perceive between the two candidates as leader of the USA. 12) My opinions are my own. They are based on my own life experiences, the teachings of my elders, my own religious beliefs, and many years of sifting through opinions of current events to find what is most consistently true. I am a well-educated woman, not some ignorant rube. I prefer listening to others over confronting them. I am responsible for the welfare of others & I am not dependent on the government dime. Hands down, without question, I have made the decision that I will vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or even Joe Biden because I have concluded that he is a far superior choice despite his glaring human failings. Understand it or don't. That's your choice. But you may want to take a more objective look into who chooses to belittle people with differing opinions.

Thanks all for the replies! I know this is a contentious issue and I just want to point out that I didn't call anyone names in my OP or one subsequent post. I am just really trying to understand how our country has come to this. I've stated on other threads that I'm not a Hillary fan, either, but I truly think she is at least more stable and less dangerous than Trump. I don't know if anyone who actually likes/supports Trump is on this thread, but I do know several in real life, and it makes me sad that in 2016 we we have so many people who apparently actively support racism, misogyny and this bombastic way of talking. I have yet to hear anyone, here or elsewhere, cite policy or platform reasons why they support Trump, other than a generalized desire to make America "great" "again." I will ask: if you're voting for him just because you don't like Hillary, do you really think our country is safer with him in charge than with her? I tend to vote on social issues, personally, but I worry for our basic safety under a Trump presidency. ETA: leftturnonly, I didn't see your post - you must have posted it just as I started typing mine. Well. Thanks, I guess? For condescending to answer me even though you think I'm prejudiced.

Well, if the Dems had picked someone other than the Annointed One (aka, lying cheating self-glorifying Hillary) there would probably be voting Democrat this time around rather than sticking with Trump. I really don't think the Democrats can claim any type of moral or political high ground with their nominee.

I am still not sure what I'm going to do in November about the presidential election other than I will never in my lifetime cast a vote for Hillary Clinton. That does not mean I support Trump. I'll give you one of those positives that some are asking for, though. The list of SCOTUS nominees he released last month does not suck at all. I'm sure liberals don't like it much, but it's a very respectable list, and his releasing it shows he's at least thinking about the duties of the job. With all the folks who have said that regardless of a candidate's drawbacks, they will vote party because of the SCOTUS, this is definitely a reason for conservatives to vote for Trump.
I'm also not afraid of being nuked under a Trump presidency more than any other presidency. We have big enemies in the world who want to wipe us out and need no further excuse to do so if they should gain the capability. Those who have the capability right now are not our enemies, except for Russia, save that Putin likes Trump, and China who no one knows exactly what nuclear capability they currently have. Anyone nuking us is also shooting themselves in the foot, so to speak.

I understand why people would not be willing to vote for Hillary or for Bernie. I can even understand the people who are willing to vote for him just because he is NOT Hillary. But I still haven't seen a clear answer on why people actually like and support him. My DH is a Republican. He is voting for Hillary if she is nominated. My mom is a Republican who doesn't vote. She is voting Democrat this year. My SIL is a Republican who is sitting out the election. My in-laws have both said they will probably write in a candidate. And my Born Again, military family member is in a panic because she never expected him to get the nomination.
My cousin, on the other hand, loves him. She wants him as President so he brings jobs back to the US. Nevermind that he hires more foreign workers at his Mar-A-lago estate or that his clothing is made in China and Mexico.

At this point I think those who are confused on why Trump has support are tone deaf or simply not listening. I posted month(s) ago that when I realized that he wasn't just a lark and listened to a few of his speeches and his supporters it's really not difficult to understand why he's resonating with a huge portion of people. There is a large section of this country that believes not only that the establishment is not working for them, but is working against them. Trump has essentially tapped into the exact same discontent as Bernie Sanders. "We understand your pain and that the current government is screwing you." The fundamental difference between a Bernie Sanders supporter and a Donald Trump supporter is the former still believes that the government can be reformed to be on the little guys side. The Donald Trump supporter has more of a let it all burn mentality coupled with a - hey he's a freaking billionaire how much worse can he be than the latest string of people who haven't done a damn thing for me. People with nice comfortable lives want to talk about what an ass Donald Trump is - his supporters don't give a flying monkey that he's an ass. They're struggling economically and are damn tired of the same old politician feeding them the same old line. I supported one of those 16 other Republican talking heads - and am comfortable enough to be worried about a Donald Trump presidency. But I'm not so insulated from those in this country who are hurting to not understand why he's attractive to them and I damn sure know that just calling them all stupid is nothing but hubris.
