My heart is so heavy today. I can't even feel anger; I'm just sick to my stomach. My prayers are with the families. One sad thing; in order not to be threatening during the protests, the police did not wear bullet-proof vests. I hope that changes in the future. LEO need to do whatever than can to protect themselves. Screw that...my husband and I have an agreement, vest at all times. He has spoken up a told a supervisor he will not cover an event due to that request. A vest is necessary in the times we live in.

My BIL's vest stopped one bullet, but another went in just under it and caused critical injuries. If he hadn't have been vested he would not still be with us.
I have another friend who's vest saved her life when a suspect tried to pin her in between two vehicles.
I think we should be careful about Monday-morning-quarterbacking, since we don't have confirmed details on this, but going unvested doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

I would absolutely expect officers to wear their vests. Its the riot gear and rifles during protests that are over the top, imo.

ACtually, the chief of the Dallas police said on the news that they purposely had no riot gear on including vests.

So horrifying, can't see an end to this. Prayers and hugs to LEO families everywhere. I can't imagine the stress of having a loved one in law enforcement today.

As far as I am concern these snipers should be treated as terrorist. If they weren't at this protest isn't that what we would be calling them?

It makes me so sad, if my husband was an officer I would have a really hard time with him going into work, there is too much hate in the world right now. We are too divided. I was born and raised in Dallas so my facebook feed has been full of prayers, love and pain. I looked at the "trending" articles though and the comments made me sick. Saying this retaliation is going to happen more, this is only the beginning, eye for an eye, etc. So so disturbing

I jist read that the sniper, who was killed early this morning, said he was out to kill as many whites, especially white police officers, as possible. And that he was angry at the deaths of the two black men this week.

WAY too close to home.
Such a scary world we live in...when you die protecting your land, and your people. Why does the color of our skin matter? LIVES matter, including those protecting us, even when you don't agree with them.
My love, and prayers are going out to all of our Police force, those injured, and the families of those lost.

Obama also signed an executive order limiting the amount of riot gear that can be given to and used by officers. Is this what you are referring to: www.wsj.com/articles/white-house-to-announce-new-policing-standards-1431943381summary below: President Barack Obama said Monday that he would ban federal transfers of certain military-style equipment to police departments as part of a broader administration effort to build trust between law enforcement and communities. The administration announced more stringent controls for other equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles, some specialized firearms, explosives and riot gear. Law-enforcement agencies requesting such gear will be required to seek the consent of local government and ensure that personnel are trained to use the equipment. Jim Bueermann, president of the Police Foundation, a nonpartisan nonprofit, described the administration’s approach as thoughtful. The decision to ban federal transfers of certain equipment won’t preclude police departments from purchasing that gear from private vendors Mr. Bueermann noted, adding the limited list of prohibited items wasn’t likely to impede policing. “I don’t have any comprehension about why you would need a bayonet in domestic policing,” he said.Sounds like the order is more for military style and also that the items are referring to federally transferred. So the police departments can still request them or purchase the items themselves. Unless I have misread the above? Or is there another order you are referring to that limits basic police riot gear?

And 2nd, dumbasses is not even going to get his point across. Instead of focusing and working on the issues around the police and some black people, the attention now turns to keeping our police officers safe.

We need a Martin Luther King type figure to help this county out. Someone who is for uniting, rather than dividing. Someone who stands up for injustice, but turns his back on violence. There are so many great King quotes that we could all do well to live by. Totally, instead I saw this calming influence... A former member of the US House of Representatives has declared “this is now war” in reaction to the death of five police officers in a shootout at a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas. Joe Walsh wrote on Twitter: “3 Dallas Cops killed, 7 wounded. This is now war. Watch out Obama. Watch out black lives matter punks. Real America is coming after you”. Mr Walsh, who served as an Illinois congressman from 2011 to 2013, quickly deleted his tweet. from this article www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/dallas-police-shooting-barack-obama-joe-walsh-twitter-warning-this-is-war-real-america-a7126301.htmlWell, isn't he just a peach! I don't have any words.

She isn't referring to vests but riot gear (helmets and shields) which fall under the Controlled Equipment list of the executive order. The government doesn't make it easy for police forces to acquire the equipment.

I'm sure more news will come out on this (since most "articles" are snips of tweets and I'm not able to watch videos at 4am), but is there a chance this is not directly related to the protest? That these were some guys who were planning to do something anyway and used the protest to make a point? Who makes up a bunch of bombs in less than a day? I'm hoping this is the case; hopefully there will be more info in the morning. I can't imagine the pain of those families right now. I think you're right.

I don't think bombs, especially crude ones, are all that hard to make. My husband tells me that in college his freshman and sophomore years the chemistry profs they had taught them how to make bombs. This was pre 9/11 though. But I'm pretty sure if you google it explicit instructions on how to make them will pop up. There's even probably you tube videos with step by step instructions (there are for everything else). I do not recommend actually looking up how to make bombs though. In Dallas June 13, 2015, the police department headquarters was shot at from an armored van. The man was followed and eventually killed, but it makes you wonder if this attack on police was related or inspired by that. It was a very well-coordinated ambush with multiple people involved. It certainly has the feel of something in the works for some time.

I had a hunch the shooter would be ex-military. I don't believe there are multiple shooters. They always think they are when something like this goes down they they determine it's not. I just can't imagine being organized enough to get someone to do that with you. linkThe shooter used the same gun the guy in Orlando did. "Today, Americans own at least a few million AR-15s and as many as eight million, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation...AR-15 is how easily it can be disassembled. The gun can be taken apart and carried several miles in a backpack" link

I was wondering if they were using special bullets that could pierce the vests. In the online news I was watching last night, there was mention that police around the country will be re-evaluating now. Things like bringing back two officer units out in patrol cars instead of the single officers now. I also heard several of the people who had been there to protest say that they had made it a point to thank the officers around them. Between that and the professional demeanor of the Chief of Police and the Mayor at the news conferences, there's real hope of better communications in the future. (my hope, anyway) Friday, the national Fraternal Order of Police union called on authorities to prosecute these snipers under the category of hate crimes.

I don't even know what to say. I'm a cop's widow. I am so sick, I can barely type. May God show mercy upon these officers and their families. May those HE's taken tonight rest in eternal peace. These poor women and their poor children. What kind of sick animal thinks this is ok to ambush and massacre men doing their job. Thank you Megyn Kelly for having the class and compassion to not show the bodies of these brave men. Oh God there are just no words, none. Prayers for all my blue family tonight. May God have mercy. Just sending you love. May God wrap you in His comforting arms. Thank you. I still have nothing. 5 officers dead. Gone for nothing more than doing their job. Yes my husband was a police officer. Yes there is the occasional bad cop. But for those that question the integrity of all cops based on the actions of the few: after last night's perversity these brave men, all around this country, woke up this morning put on that uniform and pinned on that badge and stood the line.
