Happy Monday!
Hope everyone had a nice weekend! What are your plans for this week?
I am making strength training a priority! Hopefully will get my usual 4 miles in on Tuesday & Thursday, maybe 8 or 9 on Saturday.

This week I want to focus on distance and duration but not incline. I have shown myself I can do incline. I can do the speed I want to do. I will try a lot slower and walk the treadmill longer. I hope you don't mind me posting to these threads as a walker.

I'm sitting here right now trying to decide my schedule for the week. I need to stop walking every day (I walk around 4mph and my legs were starting to give me trouble), so I'm alternating walking with short, hill-focused bike rides. (I'm just "learning" to cycle longer, and the hills are giving me major trouble, so I'm starting with my 2-mile walk, which is all downhill in one direction and all uphill in the other. I'll eventually repeat that loop and then look for a longer one.) I'm thinking I'll walk today, Weds, and Friday, and ride tomorrow, Thursday and do a longer ride on the weekend.
Looks like I've made a decision!
On a good note, my new shoes arrived last week (Brooks Adrenaline GTS), and I love them!

I did my long 8 mile walk yesterday so today is a rest day for me! My half is on the 31st so my weekly miles are going up, up and UP! I hope my legs survive

Did just under 2 miles this morning. I wasn't feeling it today. Also, I'm really noticing the instability in my right leg. My right foot turns out and my knee in. I got home and walked up and down the hall in front of the full length mirror and sure enough, my left foot walks straight ahead and my right foot turns out. The things you learn when you start running! lol Not sure what will help that? KT tape? Brace? Strength training? I don't know.

Get a referral to see an orthopedist - they will be able to pinpoint what is wrong/why your right foot isn't aligned. Then they will recommend how to fix it.

I walked again today, yay! It's painfully slow getting back into a routine, but I gotta start somewhere. I felt good when I left the gym (as usual, right?).

I used to walk long distances fast a few years ago. Now i can barely get my feet off the ground on the concrete. I would just rather not at all. This is a terrible attitude to have. I wish I could go for a 3 or 4 mile walk and then come home and pass out. I just don't have the strength to do that anymore. Also, walking on the road makes my feet feel tired and not want me to walk. (It's totally psychological I know I just can't get over it). Keep in mind I can do the treadmill and love it.
Ok I'll shut up. Just do it. Again.

Elannah, why are you having trouble? Is it an injury or motivation? I've been both places and it stinks (still fighting nagging injury). Hang in there! It is worth it.
I finished 9 very slow, painful miles yesterday. It was humid and hot and some jackhole stole my water bottle that I had hidden along my route. I was so irritated since I was dying and out of water. I ended up at the 7-11 and filled my water bottle from the sink. They wouldn't let me use the fountain machine so the water was warm and tasted funny, but it was wet. I have a short 3 miler tonight followed by BEER! My motivation to get out this evening to run is beer with friends at the local brewery. Joggers and Lagers…how fun is that?
I decided to register for the 20K at the end of the month. I have to get at least 10-11 miles in that weekend anyway so I might as well pay to be miserable. Just kidding (sorta). There is bling involved so that makes me happy.

It's once I am out walking I think my feet feel heavy, my legs don't want to move and I think ok I have walked 2 blocks I am done. On the treadmill it's like the machine does the work for me. I set it to whatever speed or incline and I do it. How messed up is that? I would like to be able to go out and walk and relax and enjoy the scenery etc. All I have is heavy legs. (I am overweight but not that much I don't think...).

My right leg does a very similar thing & the PT I saw told me it's due to muscle weakness in my hips. I highly recommend working with a professional because they can help you pinpoint your problem quickly, but in a worst case scenario check out the myrtl routine. Also, squats are important, too. (I do the myrtl routine three times a week along with a bunch of other exercises including a few different types of squats. If I skip this routine for more than a week, I start feeling it in my legs.)

Thank you for the advice, ladies. I have scoliosis so I wondered if it had to do with that. I will start doing the myrtl routine asap. I used to do a lot of those for general exercise, but there are definitely some new ones in there!

I never knew that routine had a name, Yoki. I just thought it was extra torture my running coach put us through 2x/week after our runs. It is a great routine for strengthening hips which is a huge problem for me, but it is so much harder than it looks. Delta Dawn, I understand where you are. I struggle with negative thoughts during my runs especially during that first mile. I swear no one wants to be in my head during the first mile. I have to change up my scenery, music, podcasts to keep it fresh, but changing my thought patterns really help the most. I have to tell myself that it WILL get easier as I go along, and I will be finished in no time. Sometimes I have to do some serious positive talk and focus on how fortunate I am to be able to use my legs and enjoy the moment. Whatever works, but dwelling on the negative really will bring me down in no time. I think we all do it but staying in that negative place will really get to you. I think this late summer weather is also a culprit. I don't feel as fresh and I do during the spring and crisp days of fall. Keep at it and remember why you are doing it.

I managed to get my 4.10 miles today, but it was hard! The humidity is high today, and it felt more like 90 degrees, to me, than 78. It is so discouraging some days when a 4 mile run is hard and it shouldn't be. Here's hoping Wednesday's run will be better.

If my cousin who was about 240 when she started running got down to 200 and RAN her first marathon WTF is my problem. I need to talk to her. Yeah I am going to Talk to her now...

Delta Dawn, seriously hang in there. As I say to my running buddies, it never gets easy but it does get easier. Does that make sense? If I could tell you how many times I have wanted to throw in the towel…well, I've lost count. How do you feel after you finish? Sometimes, that is all I can focus on before I head out on a run. I feel so accomplished when it is done. Hell, I'm leaving in a few minutes for my run, and I promise I would rather curl up on the couch with a glass of wine and a good movie, but I won't. I won't because I KNOW that I will be done in less than an hour and I will have done something great for myself. You'll do fine…just keep plugging away. PS. You are never "just" doing anything. You are walking and getting healthy. There is no "just" in that. You are doing something a lot of people don't do so you are amazing!

I have to say that gave me a genuine warm fuzzy reading this. My silver lining for the day is that I was able to eat buffalo wings with my boys for dinner tonight and not feel guilty because I ran those calories off this morning. For me, there is an incredible amount of truth in those shirts that say "I run so that I can eat!" So sad, but true, being able to eat food I enjoy is a huge motivator for me.

Well I totally failed last week while on vacation and only ran once! I should've taken advantage of the cool weather but I was too happy being a lazy bum:)
Going to do 3 miles today. Should be interesting since I just completed 30 min of leg and cardio exercises...ouch!
I have 4 weeks left till my half marathon! Not too worried since I'm just having fun with it and not worrying about beating my prior time.

I am on week 8 day 3 of a 10k training program - it's a 5 minute walk, 35 minute run (!), and then 5 minute cool down. I did it this morning but like others have said, today was one of those WORKouts. I think i'm going to repeat this day for about a week to get good & comfortable with it. Nice news is that was a 5k of running!

I had a hard walk today. Saturday my Husband choose a hike for distance and elevation only to have both the distance longer than the book said and an addition 500+ feet of elevation change. Sunday I felt okay, walked two miles and did fine. Today, walked 4 1/2 and could hardly move the rest of the day.
Slog workouts are just plain hard and they set me mentally back to feeling unfit and unable. Logically I know that isn't true but sometimes your emotions can run right over the logic and obliterate it.
Thanks for the video link - my hips may not welcome it but I do.

I've had enough terribly discouraging workouts followed by amazing workouts that I kind of look forward to the sucky ones because I know something great is around the corner.

Well I was really angry as something happened in my personal life. So I walked 4.16 miles today! Yayayayay! I am tired. I hope I sleep well tonight. I had to get out and just did it. I took my phone and talked to a BFF for about 30 min and it was awesome! I feel great now.
Back at it tomorrow!

My legs were very unhappy about running this morning so I mostly walked three miles instead. Now I need to stretch really well, foam roll my hip & go to the dentist. Fun morning!
