My little OCD brain had a hard time with the black and white paper not having matched up sides.
It was a little awkward, but to each his own.

What's funny is that Jennifer McGuire just closed on a new house and posted the start of the renovations and included in that post the information for a new IG specifically for her home renovations because she didn't want to annoy people with content that wasn't relevant to her business side of things. I immediately followed it because that is actually one thing I would have loved to see on her main account because I am also an HGTV junkie (periodically, anyway) and love that kind of thing...but I'm guessing there are plenty of people who disagree and are happy she created the second account. Where is Jennifers new home instagram? I can't find anything about it. www.instagram.com/myworkinghome/

Some people are easily annoyed, others are not. The things about Becky described in this thread that annoy people do not annoy me in the least. I might chuckle or think something is over the top but I feel no annoyance because I genuinely like her as a person and respect her as a business woman.
So what it boils down to is YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE. If she changed to suit the tastes of her critics, she might offend or alienate people that love her just as she is. When you're in the public eye, you have to give up on trying to be everyone's cup of tea. You're just not going to be. So all you can be is yourself, make the best decisions for yourself and your business everyday and then if people like you, they will follow you, if they don't, hopefully they'll unfollow you and move on to someone who makes them happier. Becky has 70K followers on IG. She's obviously doing something right.

So what it boils down to is YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE. [...] Becky has 70K followers on IG. She's obviously doing something right. So true. But it's not a very smart thing to disappoint 70K followers at the same time. I'd say this launch of a 'home' line is a huge fail. Better to wait a few weeks with the introduction until you have a full line and not just a few scattered rolls of paper. Why not at least hop on Ali Express and stock up on some cute string and a few tags to go with the wrapping paper? Let your staff wrap up a few packages in pretty ways, take cute photos of those, and then I'd be interested to have second look. Becky making semaphore signs with rolls of paper gave me a good laugh but it didn't sell the new line to me. Sorry. I don't think it's a good idea to introduce a line of gift wrapping that is not even product enough to properly wrap one gift. It cheapens your brand. But that is my personal opinion on the launch. And I have nothing against Becky. She is a pure genius of sales(wo)manship and knows how to slap a big price tag on inexpensive things and still make people eat from her hand. That's an amazing skill to have. I admire her for it!

So what it boils down to is YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE. You surely can't. But you can do simple things like set up multiple feeds one for #fans/family/friends who will plotz over everything you do and one for customers who are interested in your company and product, but not so much in your shoes, hairspray, nail color, etc. After all, number of followers on IG doesn't necessarily turn into number of customers who buy your product. Some IG is #voyeurism vs. #buyerism. :*)

A person's instagram following isn't what I use to determine if someone is doing something right, but thats just me. Hello? Kardashians? Are you listening?
Edited to add: I think she is a smart business woman in most cases. That said, I do think its entirely possible that just because you are a smart business woman does not mean you are social media savy.

You know that old saying "you only get one chance to make a first impression"? Well, BH was making a major shift in her business model with the launch of Home. This is big and important. Five rolls of wrapping paper and a goofy video? Not the right way to make a first impression of a brand extension.
She would have been far better to wait until she had more product/product categories before launching. It just looks incomplete and not well thought out nor executed.

It takes a very strong person to stay humble when presented with fame and fortune. That doesn't seem to be the case with Becky Higgins. She comes across as an out of touch narcissist in my opinion. "Just giving her fans what they want" feels like a cop out. I stopped following her because it was too much. If others chose to keep following her that's their choice. It is very dismissive to waive off all dissenting opinions as "jealousy".

I've actually unfold owed her on all social media. I got tired of all the posts about the app and how it's so much better than traditional scrapbooking, the continuous knocking of anyone who would use android/pc products ( oh it's so not user friendly/difficult to develop an app on that platform), PL is so much better than traditional scrapbooking and laughing about how she wasted to much time in the past working on her albums. And the I'm so much better than everyone in everything that I do. It got tiresome. I will say I do love the idea of PL and it was a great business move...I use PL in addition to my scrapbooking.

I actually cringed when I watched the video of her dancing with the wrapping paper. Seriously cringed. Me too. I unfollowed her a few months ago on FB. I cringed every time she tried to advice about "cultivating a good life". It's all about her personal branding and I'm not interested.

It always feels like a certain kind of family is promoted. I would love to see single people, childless people, people leading different lifestyles. But I guess that's her Mormon heritage and she certainly doesn't owe it to me to make her feed more diverse. Anyway, wrapping paper doesn't do it for me AT ALL. Do we know for sure that there is more stuff coming?

What?? Ain't nobody got time to scrapbook anymore? I think both SC and BH are searching for a younger generation of scrapbookers and are aiming for the 'hipster' generation (around 30 years old) that are starting a family. But in my experience they are more interested in other crafts, such as baking, brewing, home interior etc. rather than papercrafting and memory keeping (they keep their memories on Instagram and don't see the point of printing pics, or embellish them other than on Snapchat). So, giftwrapping and ready made cute cards would be a good way to go. The problem is that those specific niches are jam packed with other cool companies, plus the nice price ones, so the competition is lethal. I wouldn't even try to go there...

Well about the only thing I fit in that demographic is age. I picked up scrapbooking at 25 and am now 30. I am none of these things (except for baking...I enjoy that here and there when it isn't too hot here in the desert).

As I said in the SC thread - Becky Higgins is a money-hungry loon. She needs to get off her high-horse because $8 wrapping paper is beyond ridiculous.

Where as let's pick Maggie Holmes because people either love or hate her designs--when she comes out with a new line like gather and you love Maggie and her work and want one of each, she's easily getting you for $75 if not more because you need more than one alpha thicker set. Love or hate Becky is irrelevant. This product launch bears similar technique as project life did--6-7 years ago when she worked out of her dining room with 3 core kits on Amazon. As a multi million dollar entity with a full physical headquarters (that was instagrammed ad nauseum), this was a very freshman type release. It was lazy and not thought out and very egotistical to think people would fall all over her wrapping paper. This product wasn't trying to please anyone. It was meant to gather her sheeple to soothe her huge ego.

I love wrapping gifts, love it. Table in front of the TV, Christmas movie going, wrap for hours kind of love. I anxiously await the release of the papers from The Container Store every year, I pick a theme and then make my tree match my presents. So I am totally fine with $8 wrapping paper, I really appreciate a good quality wrapping paper and am happy to pay for it. Beautiful and thick with grid lines on the back? Sold.
That being said, her designs don't appeal to me. And as others have said, having only the papers seems a misstep. The best part of the whole process is coordinating papers, ribbons, tags and various decorations. So, no money from me.

The SB market is plummeting and they're grabbing where there's cash flow they haven't managed to bring in yet. Of course the Gen Y women with their return-to-basics but mostly just as a fun little hobby for a few hours a week rather than a way of life and their double-income households are a main target. However, this latest "release" by BH shows just how out of touch she is with how to attract and sell via social media. No excuses really as she's a good profit-maker. And 70k IG followers is actually very telling of how not social media-oriented she is for the kind of return she is making with her brand. Sorry. We work towards this Gen Y crowd (and I'm part of them). Smallest IG following for a big client we have is actually over a million. She should have paid people to help properly build up the social media empire before launching. And then paid people to actually prepare a game plan for the launch. This was silly. And not in a you-so-silly-I-like-you strategy kind of way. Embarrassing, really. Her IG is a hot mess too for such a big brand. It's all over the place. Focus, focus, focus. Sorry, I'm speaking from a pro point of view and I have little patience for big business owners who think they know best about everything when clearly they don't and can afford a decent social media coordinator part-time. Anyhoo, her loss, not mine.

Anyhoo, her loss, not mine. She markets less like a business person and more like she's the head cheerleader acquiring a following and attempting to stay relevant. Photo Rescue? GREAT idea and marketing strategy, I think. Posting about faith (which alienates customers like myself who carry no religion, along with gays since the Mormon church has doubled down on their hatred of gays and has a history of being against races other than whites), posting about her dogs, posting about food and products she likes that aren't related to scrapbooking and essentially writing off the physical side of her product to talk people into the app just doesn't appeal to me...oh and then rubbing her Hawaiian vacation in our faces...'look what you guys paid for for me'...while disguising it as 'photo tips' (I need a side eye emoji)...all misses for me, but just in case I might miss a 60% off markdown sale or something, I haven't unfollowed her...yet. I've actually unfollowed worse, though. How Does She and pages like that post constantly with insanely stereotypical and sexist material that if not being posted by a female (I hope anyway, with the name) it would all come off as incredibly misogynistic which is significantly worse.

It was lazy and not thought out and very egotistical to think people would fall all over her wrapping paper. This product wasn't trying to please anyone. It was meant to gather her sheeple to soothe her huge ego. If you look at BH's average like per post (~500) out of 70K followers, that rate is .007 or .7% - with primarily the largest # of likes being on product related posts but only about 300 for the HOME stuff. If you look at Amy Tangerine (as one example) she gets on average about 1000 likes per 79K followers. That rate is .012 or 1.2% - almost twice as high. If you look at Shimelle as another example, she gets about 300 likes per 11.8K followers or about .025 or 2.5% almost 4 times as high. So the bottom line is # of followers <> engagement per follower <> purchases per follower. All that to say, social media is complicated and getting more so. Professionalism comes across. So does business sense. So does lack thereof. A little personal sharing doesn't seem to hurt Shimelle or Amy, but somehow Becky's crosses the line w/many people. She might want to delve into that w/a professional firm vs. a gaggle of friends or a group of temple connections. Or she could just keep touting her # of followers and keep hoping that followers will correlate to sales.

The thing is that people ARE giving Becky feedback and she is making a conscious choice to ignore it. She posted all about how people commented about over sharing and overgramming but she didn't care because it's HER and SHE is just an oversharer. And that OK with her. She is just out of touch and like someone posted above, the self-appointed head cheerleader of her own fan club.
My opinion - Becky was in the right place at the right time. She saw a chance to jump on an upcoming trend and ran with it. Being married to an anesthesiologist likely earning high 6 figures per year allowed her the freedom the "cash flow" her idea. It also turned me off when she talked about how amazing it was that they cash-flowed all aspects of her new company like it was some miracle. Again just completely out of touch. Before someone makes the accusation, I'm not jealous. No one here knows mine or anyone else's financial status. Because most people don't brag about it online.

Anyone who posts more than 3 times a day needs to put their phone down and go outside. I've been tempted to unfollow Brandi for this exact reason. Over posting is a surefire way to lose followers.

She was literally in the right place at the right time years ago. Didn't Lisa B sit next to her in church, or something like that?
Maybe that's the reason she doesn't follow advice, doing her own thing launched a big career.
I've missed the cash-flow comments. Does she think it's unique to be self-funded as a start-up? Is that a big thing culturally, LDS? Because being funded by your husband's paycheck is not normally something one advertises. I enjoy stories of someone who spent their last dime, put the order on their credit card kind of stories when they make it.
I have to laugh at myself here. I'm not that interested in her, or her designs, but am a little curious if a self absorbed company succeeds. It's sort of like "don't try, do", and the power of positive thinking.
