To use the phraseology used in this tweet: Many black people have spoken out against him and his protest, while many white people have spoken out in support of him and his protest. All this tweet does is further the divide. hmmm it won't let me copy the post.....dont know how to fix that.....

Ftr, we don't do the pledge at the high school. I know they do at the elementary. We do do it or the anthem before all sports, events, graduations...etc Y'all don't? I thought pretty much all schools do the pledge-I know even the high schools do here. Of course, I am in a fairly conservative (culturally) area of the south, but I just thought it was something that all schools did. I know that my nephew during his senior year, for reasons I still don't understand (other than generalized teen angst and rebellion,) never stood during the pledge at his high school. At first his teacher sent him daily to the office for consequences, but after the office kept sending him back without doing anything and a reminder that it was his right to not stand, she settled for dirty looks the rest of the year.

--and honestly, I personally don't even like to even use the term 'American' like this any more, myself. Because Canada is part of North America, and there is also a Central America, and a South America. Are we not ALL American? Tangent and serious question: If you get rid of the term "American" to describe someone from the United States of America, what would you substitute? Never mind. You've sparked my interest and I'm off to start a thread! All your fault, missy. More tangenting: Speaking of names: I never heard of Colin Kaepernick, but I like his name.

I know when I was in high school we did not say it. I'll ask Ds tomorrow if they do. I live and teach in conservative rural districtsetting, so one would think we would, but we dont.

I'm sitting on the "why do we play the national anthem at sporting events" bench. I never understood it and honestly, I'm probably grabbing a beer or snack during it. Makes no sense to me and I'm a sports fan.
That said, I saw this quote on social media that summed it up perfectly for me, wish I had thought of it.

What I find incredulous is that this man's protest has generated 6 pages here, is known about across the land, an national outrage is expressed by so many. He's on all the news channels, in all the papers. You can't look at social media without seeing something about him.
In contrast, a protest by thousands of Native Americans trying to stop the progress of yet another pipeline being built, to save the water has only generated 2 pages worth here. It is now buried on page 5. Many of the posters on that thread admit knowing nothing about it. Other than local media, and NA social media sites, there is not much written, spoken or tweeted about this protest.
Which sounds to me like more people care about a rectangular piece of fabric than a body of water and the environment. I just don't get it. The flag is a symbol. It will do nothing to save us. However, once we run out of water, we die. Simple as that.

Of course it's ok for him to sit. That's part of our freedom under this country and flag.
People really need to find better things to get their panties in a twist over.

I see no one as mentioned Gabby Douglas not putting her hand on her heart for the Anthem during the Olympics. When twitter got angry her response was this: Not really addressing the issue if you ask me.
There was a black radio DJ that got some heat for calling Colin not black since he's bi-racial and adopted by a white family. The DJ said what does he know about the black experience.

Unfortunately, the media really does control what is news.

Also, just want to gently correct you...it is not just a Native American issue. It's a human issue. There are maps of oil leaks happening every day, just in the US alone. Pretty soon, our ground water will become so contaminated, we won't have any other source except for rain water. And the government forbids that too!

I'm so sick of hearing about this, so sick of seeing all the memes and 'like's on Facebook about this. When it first broke out I had an opinion, I made one comment and was done with it. People can't and won't let it go. It seems to be getting worse.
Last night I saw someone 'liked' a comment on FB saying Kaeper was right 'after all' about the national anthem and dug up some additional lyrics long forgotten ago, with a line about slavery. I'm SO done. Really? Lets just constantly dig up old, irrelevant stuff and FORCE the issue.
People just want to hate and fight. They love it. Disgusted with everyone at this point.

I remember back to 9/11 when a determined enemy killed thousands of our citizens. There was no division over which color lives mattered more or who was oppressed or which candidate is a bigger liar. We were all Americans, united under one flag, one country. It will be interesting to see how the NFL handles opening day on 9/11.

IMO the discussion about changing the National Anthem does nothing but further divide the country. If Kaeper doesn't like the way people are being treated or feel they are oppressed, DO something about it. Changing the song is merely a cosmetic issue and will not change the problem.
John Legend tweeted the song is "weak" and of course suggested the usual option of America the Beautiful. I like both songs, but for me the "Star Spangled Banner" speaks about the power of our nation. Maybe I am biased. I am an Air Force wife whose husband served overseas on many occasions. That said, he served so that people like Kaeper can make disparaging remarks about the country DH pledged to protect.

I read this thread yesterday, and didn't jump in because I needed time to think about it. I was appalled that he didn't stand, but have softened my view slightly after pondering and reading the posts here.
He plays a game for a living. The game has become big business in this country as well as around the world, but it is a game. It's not saving lives, advancing society or creating a new gadget to improve the world. The NFL generates money and jobs, and this young man has gotten paid very well to throw a ball (or catch it, whatever he does...) in America. The wonderful, freedom-based country where he lives has a lot of problems that need to be corrected, and he can either be part of the problem or part of the solution, as we all can. His statement of sitting down during the playing of the song that represents our country certainly expresses his view, and it got attention, but I don't see that it has done much to solve the problem he was protesting about.
Perhaps, and this is just my opinion, he should play that game he gets paid for as well as he can right now, and use some of his money and off time to improve the circumstances. Perhaps when he done playing that game for a living, he can use his talents elsewhere to improve the circumstances in the world.
Or, maybe I'm reading more into this - maybe he's just a lazy SOB who got caught not standing up and is spinning his actions.

Disparaging - expressing the opinion that something is of little worth; derogatory What did he say that was so derogatory about our country?

Without reading anything else, my thoughts:
I think it's perfectly fine.
I realize him sitting isn't a proactive approach, but given his fame and the viral nature of his act of defiance, I think he's doing a lot. A lot more than most people involved in the movement. Many of the rap artists backing the BLM movement have violent pasts and it makes them very hard to sympathize with. Colin is a much better face for the message.

And this isn't a song that would be all that commonly played among the demographics here I would think...but the shuffle on the ipod thought it was just the right time for Ozzie to croon in my ear. Isn't that funny?

My second biggest complaint is that I don't believe the NFL is consistent on this issue. There is no rule that compels an athlete to stand during the National Anthem but there are dozens of pages of how free speech is restricted on their uniforms. The Dallas Cowboys were forbidden from putting a unity decal on their helmets to show their solidarity with the five slain police officers in the city. I think the NFL would be wise to tread carefully or a large percentage of their fan base could decide they're unwilling to spend big bucks for NFL gear or games. And, you can bet your sweet bippy that if it was a Patriots player, he'd be suspended. While it's his right to protest and not stand, I think it's very disrespectful.
