Update 2/9 So good news and bad news at my post op today. Voldemort turned out to be benign. But there was a nodule next to him that Dr Nunn took as well. That little nodule tested positive for papillary cancer. Because of the type it was I have to have surgery again next Friday to remove the rest of my thyroid. A few weeks after that they'll have me take a radioactive pill to kill anything that might remain in the surrounding tissue.
OP I'm having my thyroid removed tomorrow (cancer) and the anxiety has kicked in. I was 17 last time I had surgery. I was in a lot better shape, weighed a lot less, and was completely invincible. It didn't even phase me. But now I'm mid-30s, overweight, out of shape. So I have concerns. Basically, I just want to wake up and not be dead.

I'm hoping it will be a lot easier than your anxiety is telling you it will be. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

Sending prayers and good wishes for a problem free surgery and speedy healing. My BFF's daughter recently went through what you're about to and she's doing very well all things considered, so I hope the same turns out to be true for you, too. Hang in there!

I had this surgery 2 years ago because of cancer.
The recovery was so much easier than I thought it would be. I was 43, overweight, and out of shape. There wasn't much pain at all. My surgeon said it was because there aren't many nerve endings in the neck. My bandages looked gnarly, so be prepared for that. After the pad came off, I had a steri strip covering what looked like black Frankenstein stitches. It took people aback. Once the stitches were out, it looked much better.
A harder thing than recovery might be finding the right dose of medication you will need to take. Just be patient and listen to your body.
wishing you the best with your surgery and healing.

Thanks for the info honeyb ! My doc said they move the muscle over, so it is a much easier surgery in that aspect. He said he will be doing internal sutures so the scar should be minimal. I will have a drain tube till Monday or Tuesday, that will be a bit icky, but will really help with any swelling. I know its a pretty common surgery, it's just my anxiety working against me.

I don't blame you for feeling anxious. Cancer and surgery are not relaxing issues in the slightest! But I am positive that you will be much more relaxed after your operation, and that you will be back on here cancer-free, ready to get on with the business of living. and good luck.

That seems to be so common in our area. One of my best friends/neighbors who I just was with a couple of hours ago had this same thing several years ago and has not had any problems. Wishing the best for you! Update us when you get a chance!

My cousin had this surgery a little over a year ago and she came through just fine. You will, too! Surgery is scary but they will take good care of you and you will wake up! I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Had a cyst removed from my thyroid last spring. I am older(48) and heavy and came through like a champ! You will be okay. The best part is you don't feel a thing, once you wake up it is all over. Praying for a quick recovery.

If I can answer any questions, please let me know My cancer was the follicular papillary type I won't know what type mine is till after the surgery. Since the surgery had to be done either way because of how large my thyroid on the right side is, we skipped the biopsy. My uncle had exactly what you described 20 years ago. Which is funny because they said thyroid problems are not hereditary but that they do tend to "run" in families.
