I completely understand. I have a bit (huge) of an irrational fear of hospitals. I have only had one surgery and felt like I was going to be that random person who "should have" made it through surgery. You know, my doctors were right. I had a lot of bleeding and they had to finish the surgery differently, but they knew exactly what they were doing and what to expect if things didn't go as planned. And since you don't have a choice, go in with trust and few prayers. You will be fine. Now I will be expecting to see you post in a day or two to let us know that everything went well and you were worried for nothing! Hugs.

I had this surgery 2 years ago because of cancer. The recovery was so much easier than I thought it would be. I was 43, overweight, and out of shape. There wasn't much pain at all. My surgeon said it was because there aren't many nerve endings in the neck. My bandages looked gnarly, so be prepared for that. After the pad came off, I had a steri strip covering what looked like black Frankenstein stitches. It took people aback. Once the stitches were out, it looked much better. A harder thing than recovery might be finding the right dose of medication you will need to take. Just be patient and listen to your body. wishing you the best with your surgery and healing. Thanks for the info honeyb ! My doc said they move the muscle over, so it is a much easier surgery in that aspect. He said he will be doing internal sutures so the scar should be minimal. I will have a drain tube till Monday or Tuesday, that will be a bit icky, but will really help with any swelling. I know its a pretty common surgery, it's just my anxiety working against me. My final scar is so minimal. It's a thin white line that is half hidden in one of my (many) neck folds I did forget to mention another side affect to be aware of in the surgery. I was warned about it, but my sister (who also had the same surgery) was not. The thyroid wraps around the vocal chords. It is likely that the surgeon will touch them. If he/she does, you will likely have some temporary voice changing. Mine was not necessarily in talking, but when singing, I could not hit higher notes. Nothing would come out. My sister's voice came out sounding like a little old lady trapped in a hole. All problems ceased within about 6 weeks.

I had thyroid cancer 11 years ago treats with a total thryoidectomy and radioactive iodine I wish you well with surgery! If I can answer any questions, please let me know My cancer was the follicular papillary type I won't know what type mine is till after the surgery. Since the surgery had to be done either way because of how large my thyroid on the right side is, we skipped the biopsy. My uncle had exactly what you described 20 years ago. Which is funny because they said thyroid problems are not hereditary but that they do tend to "run" in families. I am one of 3 sisters. We all have had thyroid cancer. First the middle sister was diagnosed, then older sister and I went in to be screened. We both had it. In 6 months time, all 3 of us had total thyroidectomies. They were Stage 2 and had to do Radioactive Iodine. I was stage 1 and did not do the Radioactive Iodine. After pathology, they'll let you know your Stage and type of Cancer. Again, good luck to you.

I'm having my thyroid removed tomorrow (cancer) and the anxiety has kicked in. I was 17 last time I had surgery. I was in a lot better shape, weighed a lot less, and was completely invincible. It didn't even phase me. But now I'm mid-30s, overweight, out of shape. So I have concerns. Basically, I just want to wake up and not be dead. Sending prayers and hugs your way. My double mastectomy is Tuesday, I'm 48 and out of shape too, lol I understand the nerves. 🙂 Huge hugs and prayers to both of you for smooth surgeries and quick healing. Also praying that the doctors give both of you good news about your results.

Having cancer of any kind is very scary. And even the "easiest" surgeries are also a bit scary. Like the others, I have complete faith that you will do fine, the surgery will be straightforward, and you will be cancer free tomorrow. Now that's a good thing, right? As someone else mentioned, it might take a while to get your medication regimen figured out, but just listen to your body and communicate any concerns to your doctor and you'll be fine.
Good luck!

He said there's a nerve on the left side that if it's damaged you sound like. 80 year old smoker for the rest of your life. He said he has a tool that detects if he is getting too close to that nerve. Glad you're was temporary!
