My little guy turns 6 on the 21st. Hes been looking in on the video feed from time to time with me. He's decided that April won't be having her calf until his birthday. He told me to let the "pea yadies" know. So, pea ladies, we are wasting our time until 4/21 according to the great wise one.

I am still calling the baby August. I hope she has her calf soon, though. I hated being pregnant and I am assuming for a giraffe that has been pregnant for 14-16 months she must be miserable.

You know, I've been trying to keep an open mind and support them, but this text update thing is really starting to rub a little. First it was "just going to send the alert when labor starts" and now it's turned into an exclusive club. I'm afraid I don't agree with that. Now, if it had been advertised as an exclusive club from the beginning I might feel differently, but it really is starting to look like a money grab now.
(sorry grouchy - did taxes today lol)

(sorry grouchy - did taxes today lol) I agree. I think it's been a way to bring in money from the very beginning. The whole April thing I mean, not just the texts. As you said, if they'd just said that about the texts in the first place... but they didn't. Originally it was just to announce the birth and announcements about the baby afterwards. I have enjoyed watching April and I do think the staff means well for the animals (at least I hope so) but I think someone there recognized a good thing to make money and ran with it.

Oh my gosh...my sleep was very bad last night. I think it was the full moon. I usually can sleep throughout the night and wake up a little before my alarm goes off. But last night, I think I woke up about 5 or 6 times. My dreams were full-on weird too. But one thing I did dream was that April had her calf! So I was so excited when I finally woke up for real to check to see if she did have it. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) Nope. But maybe today!!!!!

4/11 Morning Update April is reported to have her great demeanor this morning and a standard appetite. There is "wetness" around the back end, which is likely due to tail swishing of discharge. She is outdoors as I type this update! Got to love the return of warm weather! Short and sweet today! ---------------------- Giraffe Conservation Factoid: No Ivory - so what's the Draw? Giraffes are hunted for their hides and meat, and also - of all things - their tails! The tail is highly prized by many African cultures. The desire for good-luck bracelets, fly whisks, and thread for sewing or stringing beads have led people to kill the giraffe for its tail alone. (sorry grouchy - did taxes today lol) I dont begrudge the Park anything and I do believe the mention real time or "exclusive content" pretty close to the beginning of when they talked about the new text system. Or at least when they were testing it too ... here I found this If you haven't yet - we HIGHLY suggest subscribing for the Labor Alert & Baby Update text system. The tech team has caught up with most all questions and inquiries and are coming up with creative ways to share photos of the Labor/birth and baby photos of those first crucial moments of bonding, walking, nursing. We will be able to provide realtime updates from the giraffe barn! Even our staff that can't be in the barn is signed up for the alerts! Subscribe at: www.aprilthegiraffealert.comWhat about me? If you do not signup for text alerts, it does not mean you won't see the clips or photos eventually. You will! The text alert system simply allows us to provide real time updates to those that wish to have them! Why not Facebook? Because during labor - our phones and devices will be recording these awesome moments! The alerts are just another avenue to provide more content through another platform - for those April fans that can't get enough! So we'll see those photos, just not right away is my take on it. Either way for a one time cheap fee it's not a bad deal. People spend that on less. Hmmmm I'm almost talking myself into subscribing lol (I haven't yet. I don't want a bunch of message I'll check online when I want updated ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) )

(sorry grouchy - did taxes today lol) I suspect that even they didn't think it would take this long for her to give birth. Now, they're trying to figure out how to do something other than "another day, no baby." If you know people donated and signed up, I think it's natural to want to have them feel that the donation was worth it. Hard to do when there is no baby yet. If the baby were here, this would have played out differently.

My prediction- the baby will be born on April 15 and will be named IRiS! ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/laugh.jpg.gif) Or maybe on the 18th, since that's when taxes are due this year.

4/11 Evening Update April's condition remains the same: happy, big and beautiful. She enjoyed extended yard time today in the warm weather and sun. This evening's photo is from our exclusive content library accessible to Labor Text Alert subscribers. Oliver and April have both been enjoying their new enrichment gift. We do apologize for changes in routine schedule and tardiness of posts. Now being in construction mode, preparing the park for open team members are working extended hours while encountering many daily variables. We will continue to do our best to keep you updated and informed on this giraffe journey. For all official things April: www.aprilthegiraffe.com

It is so funny to me that you said this! Many years ago, my dad bought a pony for my disabled brother. She came with a cart that he liked to ride in since he couldn't ride horseback. Anyway, when Dad bought Lady, the seller said there was a chance she might be pregnant, and lo and behold she was. She gave birth to the cutest little filly on April 15, and her name was ..... IRIS!😀

4/12 Morning Update
All is well in the Giraffe Barn - doors are open and yard time has already begun! Physical body condition remains the same, comfort level has not changed, behavior is on point.
Today's photo is of the udder, to show mammary development. For any hoaxers or #Fakenews stories questioning April and the pregnancy - a quick biology lesson - animals do not develop milk unless supporting a pregnancy. Furthermore - giraffes do not develop large udders like cattle etc, so to see this much development truly suggests calving in the near future.
Patience is a virtue! Remember, the Giraffe Cam was not set-up to capture an immediate birth - it was set-up to capture a process. Mind you, we did expect a calf sooner than this - but that is all part of the journey! --------------------------------- Giraffe Factoid: Giraffe Milk -Does a Body Good
A baby giraffe's body! There was chatter at the beginning of the year about giraffe milk as a Super Food. We don't know about that but what we can cite is; a study in 1962 (yes it's old) showed that many vitamin levels in giraffe’s milk were the same as those in cow’s milk, but the levels of vitamin A, vitamin B12 and nicotinic acid were all higher in giraffe milk. Meanwhile, giraffe milk is much higher in fat than cow’s milk – 12.5 percent compared to 3.5 percent. All that fat might sound like a turnoff, but recent research has shown that higher levels of dairy fat can also lead to a lower risk of diabetes.

4/12 Evening Update Carrot Cam All remains as reported earlier. Big and happy. We did note significant movement from the calf today during observation times. April had a few visitors (industry friends) from out of state that were shocked to see just how large she is. The camera just doesn't capture actual size/proportions. ---------- Tomorrow we will be live from the giraffe deck with Oliver! Watch for a FB live notification. ---------- All things April; clothing, merchandise, emojis, Labor Text Alerts, sponsorships and the official LIVE cam link - www.aprilthegiraffe.com----------- We have shared a carrot cam session With Dr Tim from earlier today.

4/13. Morning Update
She is "out of it" were keepers comments this morning; noting distracted behavior versus her normal inquisitive, treat begging, self. Significant bulging of the belly also noted. Backend slightly damp but nothing to get excited about yet. We are still observing light discharge on a daily basis.
Cool morning temperatures will delay yard time, but this afternoon we expect to do a Q&A session from the giraffe deck with Oliver. We haven't done a Q&A in a bit of time. So, please submit questions you may have in the comments of this post and we will address some of them!
We welcomed a muntjac deer fawn yesterday! This tiny little critter is by far one of the cutest offspring we've observed. Pictures will post once mom and baby settle in. ----------- Giraffe Factoid: the Buffet line starts here
Giraffes have been described as browsers. Unlike grazing (grass-eating) herbivores, which consume relatively uniform feeds, wild giraffe choose their diet from an assortment of foods that are very different in nutritive content. In captive management programs, fresh browse, quality hay, and Mazuri Wild Herbivore pellet diet, hits all of the nutritional needs of Giraffes to ensure a comfortable and increased longevity.

I just did my afternoon check on April and I tuned in just in time to see her scratching her neck on the plywood in her stall. It looked like she was having a convulsion at first until I realized what she was doing. It put me in a bit of a panic for a minute!! Still no baby!!!!!

4/13 Evening Update Not much to say this evening, as we covered quite a bit earlier in our live video Q&A and when crashing the Vet Visit with April. April is doing great with light discharge. Appetite is so so. Some people inquired about Oliver's behavior with April earlier this evening. He was not being "aggressive" -but he was certainly showing his dominance. You may have noticed his playful necking behaviors (not true aggressive necking behavior), his blocking her movements, etc. This is all part of the fun an games of a young bull. At no time did he pose and serious threat to April of her calf...her laying down puts more force on the womb/calf, than light head bumps from Oliver. ------------------ Text Alert Subscribers: We have some neat things in the works for you!
