I have never seen her lying down for so long. She shifts positions, but has been "down" for the past few hours. Usually it is about 20-30 minutes or so. I was noticing this earlier. She is down way longer now than before. SaveSave

She is up and walking around normally, doesn't appear to be pacing. Carol

3/16. EVENING UPDATE
Keeper report is increased swelling in the backend and significant baby kicks from within. Vet reports all is well and no reason for concern. April is posturing quite a bit which is keeping us on our toes! We will see what the weekend brings.
Today was spent digging paths for keepers to access exhibits, for animals to access watering stations and more yard space, and clearing roadways for fuel deliveries etc. We have to thank the handful of individuals that assisted in this process. Thank you for making our animals lives better, and keeper work -a touch easier under the conditions.
Tomorrow I encourage you to offer a random act of kindness. Pay it forward as they say! I know I am.
Here are a few shots from the park and what Stella left behind.
Good night world.

Her tummy is just rippling and waving. Wow that's an active baby. Hoping we see a baby giraffe soon!

I hate watching her sit down. It looks so scary. Poor girl and that tummy.

I've been watching this for weeks. Even bought a shirt, lol. She's such a beautiful animal. I can't wait to see her calf.

She's definitely looking MUCH bigger around the tummy than when I first started watching. I think its so amazing how active they are that you can see the calf visibly moving around inside her. Such a miracle.

Possibly silly question but do giraffes always give birth standing up?

In the last couple days my cat sits and watches over my shoulder with me. Every time she moves his eyes bug out! Lol. Cutest thing.

Possibly silly question but do giraffes always give birth standing up? While I was watching the April cam, I came across another giraffe giving birth in Texas. It's a LOOOONNNNGGGG way down for the baby giraffe to drop! I read they come out already around 6 feet tall! Can you imagine?!?! YIKES!!!

I wonder if they put lots of straw in there when it's imminent, the give it something slightly softer to land on?

I imagine with the size of the calf, the umbilical cord is a decent size too, so she gives birth standing up to make sure it's severed (no vets in the wild, lol). I just think the whole thing is so amazing, and feel fortunate they're sharing it with us.

3/17 Late Morning / Afternoon Update
Sorry for today's delay; an entire group of leprechauns were unaccounted for upon Morning checks. Resources have been dedicated to leprechaun trap production and implementation. Please make your own traps - and let us know if you catch anything!
In actuality, many emails and meetings this morning caused a posting delay which was not caught until now.
That said, April continues to do great. No concerns on our end - and we are anxious to see what the weekend brings! Perhaps a St Patrick's Day baby?
We received an alarming number of emails again this morning suggesting we didn't feed the giraffes. In one last desperate plea for those to cease, and explanation - do not worry! The giraffes are cared for every morning, afternoon, and evening without any reminders. Their shared enrichment feeder is not their main food source; and those main sources and their waters are off screen and filled from outside the stalls. Rest easy! Since 2015 we have cared for our long Neck friends without issue or outside input on it.
Here is a photo from a sunny day that even caused our giraffes to squint! Here is hoping for more warm weather soon!
Giraffe Factoid of the day!
Many people are aware of the conservation need for elephants, but few know that there are 4x as many elephants in Africa as there are giraffes! Does that put into perspective just how much help these animals need? The struggle is real. The time to act is now.

I can't imagine having to put up with the crap from the "giraffe experts" (aka:public) on a daily basis. I think eventually I'd just lose my shit on these people.

I read the update on their page and I couldn't believe it! The park employees have been doing this for a long time. Along comes all these lookeeloos who only became interested in the giraffes when the media started reporting about the imminent birth. I am just so happy they've let us (the genpop) in on their little slice of paradise!

I can't even imagine the presumptuousness of emailing a zoo about not caring for or feeding animals that have always appeared nothing BUT well fed and cared for, and loved. It slays me.

Honestly I hope they have prepared those kind of people enough for the fact the baby will fall when born. I'm thinking some people just look and never read. I can only imagine the emails for those who even after all the discussion about it, that will STILL come as a shock to. Ack.

Well, I know I was shocked! First, seeing the calf just hanging out there for about 15 minutes, then finally just dropping to the ground! Then watching the momma giraffe almost step on the baby! I can imagine the amount of emails they will get. I'm glad I saw that other video first. But for those who have never seen a giraffe being born, it is shocking.
