I appreciate that Kelly Purkey's digital cards are available in .pdf so I can print cards myself if I mess up the original or I can add text prior to printing. I'd say that's probably the main reason AE doesn't make her digitals available in .pdf. Otherwise, why buy physical if you can just print what you want and many times as you want? I think it's short sighted, because I buy physical primarily. I'm not interested in printing my own. It's a nice back up if I want something that will be unavailable in the future in physical format. I actually recently did NOT buy some of KP’s digitals because they were only in PDF. I like when both options are included.

Graphic Design StackExchange opinion on file formats You might want to stay away from anything JPG because of the compression, that's a start. It can work for huge formats but they are used more as a last option; for example, if you cannot upload a banner of 300mb for printing, you might be "forced" to use a JPG at 15mb!
PNG can be good but they are in RGB color mode; this is not desirable if you print on offset or anything that requires CMYK color mode. You could use it but either the printer will refuse your files and ask you to convert them yourself to CMYK color mode OR the printer will convert it for you and you'll have no control on the final result. Sometimes it gives OK results, sometimes it horrible; you might want to have 100% control on your colors. They can work fine on some digital printing machines that handle RGB well though.
...
Finally, there's PDF that can be used; they're long to save in Photoshop though but they are highly compatible and offer some freedom for compression.graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/58921/which-file-format-is-best-for-printingSeems that offering both png and pdf would be the answer if the question is - how to make the output easiest for customers to access in their own ways.

I prefer the png files because I always open them in photoshop and frequently change colors/edit elements/type my journaling. Even if I'm not modifying the card though, I prefer png because then I can pick and choose which ones I want to include on my printed page instead of printing the 6 cards or so that are pre-stuck on the pdf. I know someone said about that you could edit pdfs in illustrator, and I don't have that program so I have no idea what that would allow, but it seems to me that a designer could lock the file for editing... same as they can flatten a png file prior to saving to make it more difficult to move elements around. As far as I'm concerned though, I prefer the png by far. It seems like an easy fix to provide both options so customers can utilize whichever they want.
Not providing pdf because people will print them seems silly--that's all I've ever done with the png files, I don't do digital projects. Plus Ali actually promotes printing the digital products for use in physical projects--she has a design team almost entirely devoted to doing this and offered a class teaching you how to do it! Finally, from a business perspective, she should prefer people buying digital products because 1. the profit margin is higher with no manufacturing cost, and 2. customers don't have to pay shipping which makes it easier for internationals to purchase her products (and its not like she gets to keep the shipping money anyways). Plus, the digital products are there for sale once the physical product sells out so she can continue profiting off of an already existing product without any additional cost. It seems like a no brainer.

I am (ashamed) to admit this, but I ordered the "Progress' notepad. Progress is my OLW and when I went to buy the class I bought the pad and some other items since I was putting my own kit together. I had read it was bad, but really? How thin could it really be? Well my Progress pad came today and wow. It is practically a scratch pad. I am sure if you wrote in pencil and tried to erase it would tear a whole through the paper. Seriously -it is thinner than cheap copy paper.
I sent a convo asking for a shipping label to send it back, and no go. They won't send me a label. BUT I can pay to send it back to them and they will refund my $5.99. HOPEFULLY.
So, I can pay ATLEAST $4 to send it back to (hopefully) get my $5.99 refunded. That is, if they keep their word on actually refunding me.
What a flipping joke. I am done. Yes its only $5.99. BUT they know it is a crap product and no where near worth $5.99. I don't want cash. Give me a credit towards buying a digital and I will just print it myself.
I am done spending money with companies that don't care about the quality of items they are sending out. Done.
I should have listened to my gut and not even bothered with OLW or Ali. For years I have done OLW without spending a dime on supplies for this project.

I don't understand how in good conscience they can charge 5.99 for a product they know is crap. And then refuse a return . Quite the roller coaster we've had with AE. I'm happy to be getting the new $10 kit but extremely unlikely to take a chance on anything else new (and expensive) that she puts out.

Just got this email from Persnickety Prints, advertising a special for new Ali Edwards Story subscribers. If the kit or stamp is something you are interested in, this is a pretty good deal.

I can't see that being the reason. I can do far more with transparent PNG files to break designs apart/make new ones than a PDF with a white background. There's nothing to stop you having the PNG/JPG files opening them in Word for example, and making your own PDF. Although, you may as well just print them straight from a document if you do that! You're right that its probably not the reason but I disagree that you can do more transparent PNG files. You can do lots with transparent PNGs, but you cant open them up in software like Adobe Illustrator and change the colours in seconds, edit them to whatever size you want them to be without losing any quality, rip them apart into their elements and create your own journalling cards and them be perfect vector files. These things can be done with PDFs that are created in design software. As an artist/designer, protection of your work is important. Part of my job as a designer is protection of the brands I work for, and when I supply files to people, they can't edit what I have done. peachiceteas How can I do that with a PDF? I used to get the Kelly Purkey kits and didn't like how her digital cards were a PDF, not individual files that I could then recolor/resize in PSE. I'd get more use out of those files if I could recolor or journal on them in PSE. I've just been printing full sheets.

Maybe the promo images were of people with their words from last year because people didn't have their words for this year yet, I'm guessing those photos were shot in October or so?

Seems like the kit has sold out a lot more often than the stamp in the past. Looks like they've added more cards to the kit (starting with For the Love? I missed that.). Still not my thing, esp now that I'm getting the other new kit, but that's good. EDIT nevermind. They've just changed to single sided. lol

I’m still so irritated at how they don’t include info on size of add ons, along with other descriptive info that would be useful.
After buying way overpriced chipboard hearts last month, I’m just over it. (And no, I don’t want to watch the videos to find the info — I want a posted description).

loveslabradors I actually prefer simple-sided. Just disappointed that it sold out already and I would really like the kit too but WITH the stamp also.

I like the single sided as well. The add ons were all right up my alley this month for the story kit but I'm watching my budget so I only picked one.

Yeah I strongly prefer single sided as well. Definitely an improvement. Many weeks I've made myself crazy with my Project Life trying to work the back side of a card from the previous week...ridiculousness!

what do you guys think of the 'stories by the month' kit? I am on the fence--worth 9.99 a month but I'm always afraid to sign for 12 mos when SC is involved

I signed up for the Stories by the Month and did the 12 month. I thought the price point was perfect and I liked that I could see what I would be getting for the whole year before I subscribed. I've only ever bought one product from AE (2015 DD). I like the quality of the product. I never subscribed to SC and have been buying up DK in the last few mega sales. I've never had an issue receiving what I ordered from SC, but again, I never subscribed (and would be really pissed at how cheap all those kits are now).

I'm torn on the single sided cards--I didn't like having to choose one side over the other, but there are times I don't like a side so I was happy to be done with it...now I'll have more to store & more to decide what to do with because I'm not sure I'll ever use it because of color/saying/design. Maybe I'll just set aside ones I know I am very unlikely to use and stamp on the plain white side...

Her cards are good quality so I’ll just stamp on the white side. I’d much prefer to have a few single side cards I don’t want to use than to have a double side card that I want to use both sides. So I’m super happy with the change from double to single sided.

nicolep or lakritze If you really want the chances stamp set this month, I would be willing to part with mine. I like it, but don't love it as much as some of the others. I always feel bad sitting on something I know other people really want. I am on a six month sub, which makes it $21.99 I think... Just send me a message if you are interested.

Not that the video was super helpful as Ali doesn't say what size they are or compare them to anything, but I put them in my box to think about.
