In an addition to an assault on women’s rights, Sykes mounts an assault on all accepted grammatical standards when he outlines his ideal life for his own someday daughters, bless their poor hearts. I think you should just assume that most conservatives here have multiple personas. It's entertaining. There's definitely at least two new liberal personas since the election, the conservative ones have been more vocal for sure lately.

SO:
1) He wants his daughters to build home-based enterprises... = no outside the home jobs. got it.
2) he wants his daughters to live in homes shared with good husbands... = no gay children. got it.
I certainly hope his eventual daughters can live up to his (almost impossible) standards. And I'm glad I'm not his fiancee. And I'm glad he probably won't make the ticket, because after reading the way he writes about those "horrible she-devil feminists" I don't think he'd do a very good job of representing all his constituents equally.

The whole quote is important (if you didn't read the entire article). I just wonder why he felt the need to characterize women the way he did in the part people were objecting to.
eta - not directed toward Gina for posting it, just wondering

No, it's a stereotype. Not all stay at home moms or wives who enjoy cooking are ignorant good for nothing but baby making machines. And not every woman who chooses to pursue a career outside the home is a screaming feminist banshee. I've done both - sahm and career. I think the real point is that this guy thinks he gets to dictate the role of his girlfriend/wife and female children without consideration for their wants, simple because he has a penis.

It's no problem at all, if you think women should be kept barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. We have a complete right to think other people's lifestyle choices are sucky. Republicans have been doing it for generations. Yes, you can "think" that. But then, stop berating others who "think" gay marriage is an abomination, or illegal immigrants should be deported etc. Democrats have been touting their own right to speak their opinions while berating others who disagree with them for doing the same thing for generations. Democrats (and liberals) tout their belief for tolerance of other view points and then are shocked and outraged that others may actually have other view points. Just as another's gay marriage affects no one but the people involved, this guy's desire for a particular type of wife affects no one but himself and his wife. Do women's rights to do as they please only apply when the women think like you do? (rhetorical question; I know the answer) I've never been outraged that someone disagrees with me about same-sex marriage. I save my intolerance for those who want to legislate against it for other people. When I advocate legislating against marriages (or live-in arrangements, I guess, in this dude's case) in which the woman is required to have dinner on the table at 6:00, then you can complain about my hypocrisy. Until then ... apples and oranges. I cook dinner at 6 every night. I'm neither barefoot or pregnant. I don't get why one must be barefoot and pregnant to fix food for her family. I cook dinner every night, too. Not because it is "demanded" of me by a man, but because I like feeding my family. I'm going to assume you understand the barefoot and pregnant reference and weren't taking it literally. ETA This particular man doesn't seem, based on his own words, to encourage independent thinking in his women.

If he wasn't running for office, I would roll my eyes and say that it isn't a big deal if he has a wife that agrees with his viewpoints. I might also feel sorry for any kids that they may have, but overall it isn't my concern. However, since he is trying to be in a position to make decisions that affect the rest of us, i am horrified that this type of person may be elected.

I've stated again and again and again, that I am not Lauren. Believe me or not as you choose but stop asking. I'm done answering. Cue “I’m done here” swiftly followed by a fluff thread. Also, I have lost count of the number of times she has said she will no longer answer. This, in addition to the two aspects you mention, are indeed classic L. If she is not an alter for L, she must be so familiar with pea history she is able to troll us all in the style of L - that takes real time out of one's day (year/s) and a "legal detail absorbing type mind". Which brings us back to L. Or, is more creepy to contemplate than I can express, but I will try. Sticking my neck out here- it is only a message board, right- another thing L would have said: does anyone remember Lima pea, also Lima2? I may have the screen names a little wrong. She was truly dedicated to messing with the peas and was "permanently" banned. She had the skills and the memory, IIRC, to skillfully troll in such a way that others got blamed. Thoughts?

I cook dinner at 6 every night. I'm neither barefoot or pregnant. I don't get why one must be barefoot and pregnant to fix food for her family. I think that it is wonderful that you have chosen the way to express your love & appreciation for members of your family to have a prepared meal for them at the end of the day. This is such a great & personal way to express your loI ave & appreciation for your family. You Go Girl! I also loved to cook and prepare a meal for my loved ones at the end of the day. I did this when I worked full time out of the house and when I worked part-time or when I had my home-based business. Priorities and the scheduling of your priorities will make *most* things possible to fit into a day. This was my way of showing my love, appreciation & affection for them. Seeing their eyes light up at the table that was prepared for them, the way they enjoyed the food and the conversation around the family table was priceless. Such a simply way to keep the family involved with each others and to have conversation. #notLauren You may have your ideas but you DO NOT have the power to tell me or anyone else on this board or in this world, that their choice is sucky. Perhaps you are jealous that those who may be close to you DO NOT CHOOSE to show love & appreciation to you in such a personal way. Eating take-out by yourself at the end of the day is truly a SUCKY way to end the day. WOW, the spew of hatred that comes from you. No wonder that it seems that you are a cold and heartless person. That was me, not #notLauren, who made the SUCKY statement. I do not come home and eat takeout every night by own SUCKY self. I cook dinner for my family, because I want to and not because some medieval-thinking man ordered me to do it. You probably want to apologize to her, as she seems to be the less SUCKY of us two.

First, I don't blame him for wanting to come home to a nice home-cooked meal. I want that too. For a few weeks my husband was in training and got home at 3pm every day so he cleaned the house and cooked dinner. I would literally come home to a glass of wine ready and dinner on the table. It was blissful. I even suggested he consider become a SAHH (stay at home husband) but apparently he has his own goals and dreams that don't revolve around making my life easier. Whatever.
On a side note - I'm super jealous of him getting home at 6pm. Clearly being a senator is a pretty cushy job.
Joking aside, while I don't agree with his sentiment personally I think everyone should set up the family life that makes sense for them and I would have no issue with that family arrangement if its what they both want. Where I have an issue with him is his overarching statements that suggest this is what womanhood should be. For all women. For me. That's where it goes from being a personal choice to being sexist/misogynist and making him an unacceptable candidate.

Just this past weekend sexist comments made by Ohio legislators Bill Seitz and Matt Hoffman ...including C U Next Tuesday... about female legislators. www.3rdrailpolitics.com/article/906 Clueless Republicans Still Cracking Sex-in-Workplace Jokes-- THEIR Workplace Huffman, Seitz Cross Lines By Connor Brown Surrounded by the usual suspects of lobbyists and campaign contributors, Ohio Republican leaders gathered at the exclusive, newly-renovated Athletic Club of Columbus just down the street from the State Capital building for a closed-door "roast" of outgoing Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger's chief of staff Mike Dittoe, as he departs state service to run a congressional campaign. While flattery and lame humor were the order of the evening, sources report the running theme of the jokes was... what else? Legislator sexual harassment and disrespect of women! With an open bar of whiskey, vodka, gin, beer and wine (thanks OHROC!), the jokes from the podium were at times offensive and especially distasteful toward women. Even with awareness at all-time highs, these out of touch white dudes think sexual harassment in their very own workplace is a punchline. Hey Speaker- may need to do another round of HR training! 3rd Rail was not invited, but was given a sampling. Senator Matt Huffman (R-Lima) played emcee and regaled the group about how a female candidate requesting support "was actually a real Cee U Next Tuesday." Get it?? Hahahaha. Good one Matt! Sexist much? Huffman also took a potshot at Rep. Marlene Anielski, joking that she was "very unpopular." One may have thought we were past the point of judging women based on "popularity." Sorry Marlene, guess Matt is not going to ask you to Homecoming this year! He's going with the cool kids. But the worst was yet to come. Representative William Seitz (R-Cincinnati) called out former Rep. Diana Fessler, calling her a nutjob who "wore a tin foil hat." More demeaning still, he compared her to his current Southwest Ohio colleague Rep. Candice Keller. Saving the best for last, he imagined certain legislators doing their work "set to music." Former Senator Cliff Hite, who as first reported by 3rd Rail was drummed out of office for disturbing allegations of harassing a female statehouse staffer, could have Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It on," Seitz joked. "Or better yet," he added, "The Answer is Blowing in the Wind." Not content to just smack one chamber, he added a similar off-color double entendre to describe the song for former Rep. Wes Goodman. [Not suitable for print]. 3rd Rail is told the crowd seemed a little stunned by the sheer tone deafness of it all-- but women in attendance such as Governor Kasich's Chief of Staff Beth Hansen, State Senator Stephanie Kunze, and Rep. Theresa Gavarone did not seem to react. Surprising no one, Speaker Rosenberger sat in the front row mucking it up, presumably perfectly happy to leave the cleaning up of the House's culture to the next guy. (Or God forbid, woman). Sadly, this towel-snapping fratboy routine serves as a reminder that no matter what they might say publicly, Republican political leadership remains far too comfortable with an immature and damaging culture of sexual double standards, objectification, and hostile work environments. Last night, they let the veil slip and it was not pretty. P.S. in the spirit of karma being a bitch...while at this event, Bill Seitz fell and broke his ankle!!!

For me the problem is that he's unable to promote the choice of "traditional" womens roles, without at the same time completely disparaging and demeaning the other roles that women choose, that are less "traditional" but no less valid a choice for a women to make.
Sometimes, the choices women make are the result of other choices they don't get to make (like having children) and he seems oblivious to that.
But hey, it's a good thing he clarified his stance. At least the people of Missouri can't say they didn't know where he stood on this issue. Its all there in black and white. In his own words.

Republicans have been doing it for generations. I just had a very good laugh at myself over this comment. I consider myself very liberal. But at the moment I am barefoot, pregnant, and frosting cupcakes. That's the great thing about being a woman. Many of us can do this AND be in the workforce when we need to or choose to. Some guy with ideas of how I should live my life according to his values does not impress me. And may you have a great pregnancy and enjoy frosting those cupcakes! I'd love one right about now.
