When exactly did the phrase "chain migration" become so offensive? It's been used since the 60's, by democrats and republicans, yet now it's deemed a dirty and offensive phase used by the right. The ever-changing rules are making my head spin.

The ever-changing rules are making my head spin. The answer to that question is quite simple, it became offensive the minute it left Trump's mouth.

The ever-changing rules are making my head spin. I don't believe I'd ever heard the phrase before the last year or two. I did a time based news search on the phrase and you see a handful of references pre-2014, but it was by no means common nomenclature. I think someone did a focus group study and realized that "chain migration" makes people more likely to reject or feel negatively about immigration than family sponsorship and it became a popular word choice for those pushing anti-immigration policies. If you then layer in a healthy ignorance about what family sponsorship is and how it works it allows people to insinuate there's some magic get out of jail free card to let in your extended family. Then of course you get the cherry on top where Trump states in his SOTU speech that he's going to end chain migration as: Which is a totally and complete fabrication. So yeah, people are going to view the phrase negatively now. Snopes did a pretty good summary of the history and how it was "corrupted" www.snopes.com/2018/02/01/what-is-chain-migration/

I, too, don’t recall ever hearing the phrase “chain migration” until the last year or so. I am familiar with family sponsorship since that is the way my husband’s family came here (from Germany). It was his aunt and uncle first who then sponsored his parents and who later brought over FIL’s parents. I care neither for the emotionally manipulative term of “chain migration” nor “family reunification.” They’re both completely political and unsurprising, but I find each distasteful. At this point in time, I favor what megop said also.

I'm eating my words this morning. Just saw TRUMP welcomes a shutdown if no immigration deal is reached. Trump Encourages ShutdownThis is exhausting and I'm out of words. Like I said, I don't think Trump cares (from a political future standpoint). I don't think he has the same at stake as what the lifelong politicians do. Business owners are used to digging in their heels when they negotiate because they are thinking of the immediate gain/loss. Politicians are looking to whether or not they can get reelected and I just think he doesn't care about that. He simply does not think like a politician. What I can't decide is whether I think that is good or bad but it is the reason that many voted for him. That is what I feel too! What I heard before the election was that people were tired of politicians, especially career politicians. They wanted someone from the outside and they wanted a business person. I never heard anyone say their vote was based on abortion. I agree that his decisions are based on how one would run a business. And I don’t think he cares about the next election either.

I’m glad you started this thread. I actually deleted my account about a year ago because of the overall tone on the political threads. I used to enjoy the political threads and found the conversations interesting. I decided to delete my account when I thought people just saw me as a stupid worthless human being because I had a different point of view. A few weeks ago I happened to check 2peas just to see if there was anything different. I checked back a few times and this thread was there. I opened up my account again just so I could say hi. Thanks for giving us a place to talk. Welcome back!!

The ever-changing rules are making my head spin. Good question... I have no idea. I have no problem with people LEGALLY immigrating to the US; that's America; and if they follow each other from one section of the country to another doesn't bother me either. But I do have a problem with people coming into the US illegally. If it's illegal to begin with, it's illegal 20 years later. What is so wrong with America trying to secure her borders? LOL! Thanks for the info, dd. I'd wondered that, too. ETA: After reading the last several posts, I'll admit that my above comments sound foolish. But FTR, I don't disagree with everything that Trump is trying to do. I believe in handling the immigration problem in a way that's best for our country - but sometimes it sounds like neither side is interested in what's best for our country. Politics today is like watching a bunch of selfish, vicious school children duking it up in the schoolyard. It's disgusting.

Did anyone catch the argument between Megan McCain and Joy today on The View? Megan and Joy got into an argument when Joy stated she was offended by all Republicans. Megan was clearly disgusted. You can read about it here and there is video at the bottom. IMHO Joy's comment is completely uncalled for. I see the same mentality on this board. Its us vs them, instead of looking at a person as a person (instead of who they might have voted for). Just makes me mad.

You can read about it here and there is video at the bottom. IMHO Joy's comment is completely uncalled for. I see the same mentality on this board. It would drive me nuts! and yes, I think we've all felt that same way here. I know several ladies that don't come here anymore because of that attitude.

Hearing Joy say that just left me feeling so letdown and disappointed. I knew some were like that here but to hear it on a major tv channel? Just, ugh. SaveSave

I've always liked Megan McCain and was sort of surprised she went there (although I don't know why, I guess because she is a conservative). I keep wondering how long she'll be able to stomach it there.

I cannot stand. Can. Not. Stand. Joy Behar. To me, she is a opportunist and truly has ZERO interest in any sort of discussion and is as much, if not more, full of agenda filled hate speech as those she so freely accuses of the same.
She's "offended" by Republicans the 72% of them who support a racist. There are such insane flaws with her throwing around this figure, it's not even in the realm of truth.

Whoopi's not much better in that either. I watched the show in the very early years but they've changed guest hosts so many times and driven off so many it's unwatchable. I liked Candice Cameron but I don't think she was a strong enough personality and more conservative than most. I also feel the same with a 'us vs. them' mentality. But as I've said before there are some peas here I adore that have a very different opinions so I don't like to get into 'arguments'. It's not necessarily about changing anyones mind it's more about getting the last word lol! It's a competition in my family so I guess I got used to it!

I initially was surprised she joined the show. But after thinking about it, I think she joined because she truly did want to show that not every conservative is racist and show you can be conservative while disagreeing with your party. I don't think she will be there long. I feel horrible for her having to deal with Joy on a full time basis. SaveSave

Getting into shrill arguments will accomplish nothing to getting back to intellectual truth and common ground in order to move forward for us all on both sides of the aisle. I was impressed by those who attempted to redirect to the discussion issue at hand.

What's really disheartening is hearing the audience break out in cheers and loud applause declaring her offense with republicans. The nonchalant tossing about "racism" while pointing to the republicans is so expected and predictable. I hope McCain is getting paid big bucks to sit there with the likes of her.
