They just said that this is the 13th school shooting in 2018. So sad and scary.

So sad! I hope the initial reporting is wrong! They have an idea who he is but not whereabouts of him. I hope hope it's not died. Now they're saying 1 dead.I hope he shot himself. I'm watching CNN and Fox and following it on Twitter. I don't know what laws would fix crazy!

and on que Reporter: "White House is monitoring sends thoughts and prayers!" What would you prefer? Just curious what you think is more appropriate at this exact moment. It would be appropriate to say that if they also showed sincere concern by making any actual effort to stop this from happening every week. Since they haven’t, and since they continue to take campaign funds from gun manufacturers and refuse to do anything about healthcare, it sounds a lot like, oh well, too bad for you. ETA: as to what is appropriate - nothing. Those who have done nothing should say nothing. Trump ignores all kinds of major stuff on his Twitter. He should ignore this, too. It would be better than pretending he cares.

We, as a country, have to do something so we never have to offer our thoughts and prayers while waiting to find out how many children have been killed or injured today.

Reports here are 3 students dead 😢
"Police believe they know who the gunman is and describe him as a student and member of the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. Authorities said he was wearing a hoodie and has red hair and freckles. "

Looks like they have a suspect in custody...some FL senator told a news outlet that "many have died" but no one has confirmed that. They are also reporting that this suspect was online earlier today looking up how to make a bomb.
ETA: Students knew who the shooter is...hoping the reports of multiple deaths are not true.

I am a a person who prays. However thoughts and prayers just aren't getting the job done in regard to school shootings. I think God would reply to these prayer requests by saying. "Meet me half way. Try passing some reasonable gun laws." And it's always "too soon" to discuss or do anything about it. What would a reasonable time frame be? It is so sad.

My heart hurts. Another shooting. More lives gone or changed forever. I pray we decide that enough is enough and think that the time to start has long passed. We don't yet know all the details, but that does't mean we wait to take action for common sense measures. I volunteer with Moms Demand Action. What I would prefer is for the white house to make a statement something along the lines of "enough is enough...we've got to do something about the gun control in this country"
Then offer thoughts and prayers...I'd bet anything that all the victims old and new will be forever grateful knowing their child's death was not in vain.

Exactly. When a brown person commits a crime, Trump is right there demanding legislative solutions. When a white kid shoots up a school again, it’s “thoughts and prayers.” It’s insulting.

There is none. Thoughts and prayers followed by too early to discuss followed by NOTHING. Lather, rinse, repeat. The initial t&p followed by NOTHING does nothing.

My news coverage must be behind because I didn't realize that information had been released that this was something that would have been prevented by any sort of reasonable gun control - that this was a weapon that would have been one that is banned. The only thing I heard was that he also looked up or was in a chat room about building a bomb, which I'm sure is already illegal.

My daughter is studying abroad and I have had so many people ask if I am worried about her safety. Of course, there is always concern given the threat of terrorism in the world. But frankly I worry more for us in the U.S. who blindly continue to accept the blatant terrorism jammed down our throats by the NRA over an archaic constitutional edict that has been manipulated beyond anything our forefathers could have imagined. I am tired of the same bromides from legislators, the media and even parents who say they are stunned it happened in their community. Wake up America. Nowhere is safe if we do not seriously stand up to the gun lobby in this country. My prayers are with those families but it won't be the last time unfortunately.

Honestly, I would rather they say nothing.
Are we going to try to keep the guns out of the hands of mentally disturbed people? Nope.
We’re going to cross fingers and say the laws we have on the books are good enough and there is simply nothing we can do.
We’re gonna say “we need more good guys with guns” instead of saying “we need less bat shit crazy” people with guns.
If I lost a child in a shooting, and a politician who had done nothing but cash checks from the nra and had done 0 over the years to try to help this epidemic, offered me his thoughts and prayers I would lose my damn mind.
Just say nothing. Or say “sorry. Price of living in America”.
But quit offering hollow thoughts and prayers.

If they don't say anything they get crititized for not acknowledging. Can they do more yes, probably. I don't know what the solution is. But for others that can do nothing they want to offer words to show sadness. That's something. I know it's a strong argument on both sides. I understand the anger and frustration and as I said I don't know what the answer is. But don't condemn those who are trying to at least offer words of comfort. I get more mad if people don't acknowledge it even if it's words of sympathy. Actions are louder I understand that..

Good point Merge. Walls and laws don't prevent anyone who wants to commit a crime from doing so.
I'm out - I'm not going to speculate on the facts until they are released and as far as I can tell, there are few to no details released yet so it seems pointless to argue about what could have stopped it.

They just said that this is the 13th school shooting in 2018. What? That is really shocking to me since we are only 7 weeks into the year - that is about 2 school shootings a week. That is really shocking to me. I went to high school in the late 70s/early 80s and something like this happening was never a thought in our minds. I can't imagine what it is like to be a high school student today. I heard a reporter asking one of the kids today if he had active shooter drills this year? He said they hadn't. It just makes me so sad that there is even such a need to have drills like this - just so sad.

That seems like their pat reply when there's yet another shooting. How about taking some serious measures to stop this but I guess that's hard to do when the NRA is in your back pocket.
