I’m so freakin’ sick of hearing it’s too soon to talk about guns. When will it be time? With 18 school shootings in 6 weeks of this year, they really need to get on it before there’s another shooting in the next two weeks or so. Somebody better start something! Maybe now we can talk about the Las Vegas shooting?

Kimmel writer tweets amount NRA has given lawmakers in response to shooting prayersBY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 02/15/18 08:37 AM EST A writer for "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" is calling out lawmakers for the money they've taken from the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the wake of a mass shooting at a South Florida high school. Bess Kalb on Wednesday responded to tweets from multiple GOP lawmakers expressing their thoughts and prayers after the shooting by tweeting the amount of money they have taken from the NRA, The Huffington Post reported. "This is not a political issue. This is not a Constitutional debate. This is a pandemic that's killing children," she tweeted Wednesday. ** "In the 2015-2016 election cycle alone, GOP candidates took $17,385,437 from the NRA," she replied.
"This is NOT counting the $21 million given to President Trump," she added in a subsequent tweet.A list at link: thehill.com/homenews/senate/373974-kimmel-writer-tweets-the-amount-lawmakers-have-taken-from-nra-in-response-toThere is no list for democrats, if there were I would post it!

the stupid argument that 'stricter gun control laws' won't work is just that--stupid. Do we say "People won't wear seat belts so why make wearing them a law?" or "people will drive cars anyway so why make them get licenses?" or "men will hit their wives so let's normalize domestic abuse?" or "children hate school so why make them go?" or "corporations will always try to make money so why regulate pesticide usage?" or "teens want to use alcohol so why not just let them?" It's a fucking ridiculous, stupid, inane argument. You could say "cars don't kill people, people do" but that doesn't mean you don't have speed limits, stop signs, licensing requirements, and a mandatory one year permit period. Driving is a privilege; the right to bear arms is a Constitutional guarantee. Right there is the difference in the ability to regulate and the extent of regulation. But, when the founding fathers gave the right to bear arms, they were thinking muskets not AR-15s. It’s time to revisit the gun laws. I’m not anti gun, have family who hunts, but they don’t need an AR-15 to bag a deer.

Also, the 2nd Amendment began to be redefined as conferring an individual’s right in the 1970s, at the behest of (you guessed it) the NRA. And Orrin Hatch. This was not even mainstream Republican thought at that time, so the reinterpretation was done quite forcefully. Before that, the amendment was generally believed to confer the right to bear arms on militias or national/state defense groups - not individuals. www.google.com/amp/s/www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/so-you-think-you-know-the-second-amendment/ampBut to hear today’s gun enthusiasts talk, you’d think this was a clear interpretation that had stood for two centuries. Not so at all.

Just like a vehicle, guns should be registered, owners/operators should be licensed and insured. If your weapon is used in crime. The owner of the gun should be culpable.

Trump budget would cut millions in school safety funds: reportBY BRANDON CARTER - 02/15/18 04:18 PM EST President Trump’s proposed 2019 budget would cut millions of dollars from federal education programs designed to help school districts improve safety and provide mental health assistance in the event of a tragedy. The budget proposal, which was unveiled earlier this week by the White House, would reduce funding for national school safety activities by $25 million compared to 2017, Politico reported. That reduction would include the elimination of “project prevention grants,” which have helped schools across the country fund conflict resolution programs, prevent bullying and pay for mental health assistance for students. Politico reports the budget would also cut the $1 million in funding for the School Emergency Response to Violence (SERV) program, which has previously provided millions in funding to the school district in Newtown, Conn., following the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The program’s website says it funds services to help students “recover from a violent or traumatic event in which the learning environment has been disrupted.” Liz Hill, an Education Department spokesperson, told Politico that the SERV program’s $5.2 million carry-over funds will allow it to function in the 2019 fiscal year. Hill also told the newspaper that the department is "committed to providing resources, direct support and technical assistance to schools who have suffered unthinkable tragedy." ** In a speech Thursday, Trump said making schools safer was a “top priority” for his administration. "Later this month, I will be meeting with the nation’s governors and attorney generals, where making our schools and our children safer will be our top priority," Trump said.
"It is not enough to simply take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference. We must actually make that difference," he added.More at link: thehill.com/homenews/administration/374103-trump-budget-would-cut-millions-in-school-safety-funds-reportNot much to discuss, his goals speak for themselves! Cut school safety Cut 18.3% from HUD Budget for housing 8.8 billion, people will be homeless... Tell people what they should eat from a box. Tell States and town THEY have to pick up his cuts from Amtack/rail service Telling states to put tolls on the interstate highways that we have already paid for..... His buddies got huge tax cuts so you pay for all of it and more! And they all fly millions of dollars worth on private jets, military and/or first class while we can't afford to go anywhere. He has already spent almost as much as other presidents use in four year to travel almost every weekend! I forgot cut Medicare he promised not to touch!!

The fact that this keeps happening over and over again is absolutely disgusting. We are failing our kids. Teachers should not have to jump in front of students to prevent them from being hit with bullets.
My daughter told me there was a fire drill at her school today and there were kids in tears because they were scared that when they opened the door to the classroom and stepped outside, they would be shot and killed. It's heartbreaking.

Today, I have a broken heart. Today, I am grieving. Something has to change, today
Senator Cruz Twitter: Heidi and my prayers are with the victims and families of those affected by today's senseless shooting in Florida. As always, we are grateful to the first responders who answered the call for help and quickly apprehended the attacker. From the NY Daily News: Cruz received $41,805 in campaign donations from gun rights groups during the 2015-2016 campaign cycle and received an "A+" grade from the NRA. When I called Senator Cruz's office today. The person denied he took campaign contributions. I explained I have a broken heart, I am grieving for the losses of each person in this and the previous mass shootings. My work production has taken a HUGE drop and I have been on the verge of tears all day. I also asked that he not accept another donation from pro gun rights groups. I begged him to do something to change. I am certainly angry, but I feel others can express their anger better.

Beto O'Rourke took $0 from the NRA or any pro-gun groups, as far as I can tell with an internet search. Let's shuffle ol' Ted into retirement this fall, shall we?

This was posted by a friend—someone I’m very close to and I found it so very perfect-
“I wasn’t allowed to join the army because they didn’t want to give someone with a history of depression and mental instability a gun and place them in an inescapable environment.
They labeled me an avoidable risk, and I understand why. It took me a long time to get over a rejection of that caliber, especially going into it so confident and eager. It shattered me.
They didn’t want to create a situation in which a life or multiple lives would be taken when someone who can’t handle high stress environments with no escape snaps.
They understand the dangers a loaded weapon poses to innocent people in the hands of someone who’s not mentally well.
Let’s look this same risk in the eye now, because we’re not looking to join the army. We’re looking for a way to at the VERY LEAST stop the ability of one person to create bloodshed.”

Absolutely nothing. I’m not the one with the problems with the gun laws I suspect if a member of her family had been in Las Vegas or this high school and killed by one person with an AR-15 she would be leading the charge for reforms. It’s this “if it doesn’t affect me personally I am going to do absolutely nothing” mentality, not just with guns, that has gotten this country into the mess we find ourselves in today. I 100% agree.
