Am I alone in think Grassley isn't helping himself look very good? Agreed! I have already post several comments about his behavior!

while I was driving to work and listening to this on the radio, Senator Grassley was giving his remarks. I was struck by just HOW MUCH his voice reminded me of a querulous old man, and it very much reminded me of my dad. BUT-- My dad is 88 and retired. These OLD MEN should not be representing us.

Out of respect for Dr. Ford (and if you don't believe her, then out of respect for all of the victims of assault out there), could we please limit this thread to dignified discussion of the subject matter at hand, and refrain from personal attacks? It's going both ways and it's not becoming on either side. This is a very serious matter and it's incredibly disrespectful to not show reverence to the importance of the situation. Responding to unreasonable and disrespectful comments does nothing but fuel the maker. The only way to make it stop is to disengage. I really wish we had moderation on this board. good luck with that. There are people on both sides of this debate and it will get ugly in here just like some other threads. There most certainly are, which is a shame because there are good things contributed to the conversations, as well.

Why not? There are an unprecedented number of elderly and retired people in this country. Aren't they part of the "us" and don't they deserve representation?

Just so you know.. FOX's Chris Wallace has a new view! Chris Wallace: My daughters disclosed incidents from their youth after Kavanaugh allegationsBY BRETT SAMUELS - 09/27/18 10:21 AM EDT Fox News host Chris Wallace said Thursday that two of his daughters revealed in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh that they endured previously undisclosed incidents when they were in high school. Wallace said his daughters brought up their experiences as the family was discussing the allegations against Kavanaugh over email. "[They] hadn’t told their parents, I don’t know if they told their friends. Certainly had never reported it to police," Wallace said on Fox News during coverage of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Kavanaugh and one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford. Wallace noted that his daughters described events that "weren't as serious as the allegations against Kavanaugh." "But the point is that there are teenage girls who don’t tell stories to a lot of people, and then it comes up, and I don’t think we can disregard that," Wallace said. "I don’ think we can disregard Christine Blasey Ford and the seriousness of this. I think that would be a big mistake." ** thehill.com/homenews/media/408715-chris-wallace-cites-daughters-previously-undisclosed-experiences-ahead-of-fordOmg. See, some of them may be beginning to realize this lady is not a partisan hack. I'm glad to see him speaking out. It's sad that it should have to take the experience of your own child to make you compassionate, but it's big of him to publicly admit it.

It's the same scene Brett Kavanaugh will be looking at next. Pretty sure that was the point.

...it's really annoying me the way the expert is asking the questions to Dr. Ford-- it really DOES sound like she's being cross-examined in a courtroom. DUH-- this is the kind of stuff they would have found out IF they had done an FBI investigation. (ALSO really annoying is how Dr. Ford said she's afraid of flying, and the expert listed alllll the places she's visited by plane... as if to make it seem like she's lying about being afraid to fly.) yes, investigation would have covered a lot. But I think Mitchell is doing ok, she protects victims in her job.. She is pushing for details, buy it shows that Dr Ford is consistent.... Kavanaugh better look out!!

I joined in a discussion of this thread. It was others who started with personal attacks. Take a look at the chronology. I did not say anywhere in my post that it was directed at the person who started the personal attacks. It was directed at all who are participating in them. I appreciate the concern and respect for those on this board who have had to experience similar traumatic situations. Even though I consider myself the victim of a "manipulative date rape", it wasn't the same as the story(ies) being shared here, and my heart goes out those 1 in 3 women who will be the victim of a sexual assault at some point in their lives. It can (and does) happen to any of us.

If this is to be a true search for the "truth", her statements and claims have to be challenged. If you're looking for people to just coddle her and accept every word without questions, why bother with this hearing at all? I think everyone has been very respectful and the Republican's spokesperson is actually being too gentle.

In all fairness Mitchell is just asking the questions the Repubs conceived (because they know the “optics” will be bad if they do the questioning). So far, she’s been professional and not hostile at all. It’s helpful to have that kind of attitude in a sensitive and adversarial issue like this.

despite all the horse trading that Mitch McConnell must be doing with the few iffy Senators, i don't know how they can, in good conscience, change their minds and vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

Correct which is why some of the questions are duplicates. But then, when I miss the naming of which republican Senator time is being allotted to Mitchell, I can almost determine which Senator she is 'representing'. Also, they did say that trump was watching on FOX.

(anti-anxiety Rx, drinks on the plane, etc. etc.)

CNN reporter just said that Hatch, when asked what he thought of Dr. Ford, said she was "attractive", and when asked to clarify said she was "pleasing".

Dan Abrams just made a VERY good point (I'm watching on ABC online)... that Kavanaugh, up till now, has said 'it didn't happen, I didn't do it.' So when he's being questioned, he CAN'T respond to any of her points- otherwise, it will be clear that he was lying previously. So I imagine they'll ask him lots of questions about how much of a straight-arrow choir boy he was when he was in school... CNN reporter just said that Hatch, when asked what he thought of Dr. Ford, said she was "attractive", and when asked to clarify said she was "pleasing". like that's important to the content of the discussion?

Within 30 seconds of listening to her, I absolutely knew two things: 1.her affect, as a woman, would benefit her, and 2. my own affect would cause people to doubt my credibility. (Which has just been confirmed upthread.) She’s soft spoken, somewhat halting, emotional, anxious, classically “nice”, so more “feminine” than Anita Hill....and me. What does that say about our own social psychology - our own ideas of gender and credibility? I won’t be surprised when I hear people say that Kavanaugh is credible because he’s direct, forceful, confident, compelling. flute4peace : “attractive and pleasing.” See? Exactly!

Might as well park this here: Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, told NBC News moments after Thursday's hearing broke for lunch that he felt Ford was a "good witness." “It’s too early to make those kinds of determinations, but she’s a good witness. Articulate," Hatch said after being asked whether he saw Ford as "credible."
