I thought I'd start a new thread since there are so many and so much has happened in the last couple weeks. I'm rattled hearing today that the voter enthusiasm gap is closing and the GOP is gaining so much on Democrats. I'm hearing the GOP electorate is angry because we are trying to steal a SCJ seat.  I hate to have this attitude, but I'm wondering if it's not the best play for Democrats at this point to just vote. Continue to make it known that the follow-up investigation was BS, but just stop fighting the vote. Let the GOP seat him. Then when we take back the house (not purposely trying to tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing), we investigate and do whatever might TRULY need to be done. What do you think? Do we continue to insist our Senators fight and claw, or do we just take this loss in the teeth and vote and move forward? I am thrilled that Heitkamp is a no. I can't figure out how to label this Politics...would someone pretty please help? |

I have been soooooo discouraged hearing the news. I told DH last night that if BK is put on the SC, that is it...all three branches of government of been compromised.

I hear ya. I'm almost laughing at myself for being so happy last Friday when the committee decided in favor of reopening the background check. The balance between being cynical and being hopeful gets tougher and tougher to maneuver every day.
I'm wondering what Manchin will decide. I'd love for him to vote No, but I also don't want him to lose his seat. The hopeful side of me wonders if maybe...just MAYBE...Democrats have a tiny chance at the Senate?

From what I'm reading, fivethirtyeight IIRC, the Dems chance at the Senate is not great. Something like 70% likely Rs maintain power. Which is just crazy considering the last two years.

I actually wondered how it would play with voters when the discussion was first raised if Feinstein held off turning over the letter for political purposes. I didn't think so then and one of the main reasons was I thought it would fire up the Republican base. 2 months ago every single Democrat I know was passionately focused on the November election - there was very, very little additional passion needed in that sector. Most Republicans "I" know were pretty disengaged. A bit of bury my head in the sand about Trump as they never liked him but wouldn't vote for Hillary (this is not an attempt to reopen a thoroughly debated topic - I know the vast majority of peas don't agree or understand that sentiment). I'm not saying they wouldn't have voted, but they certainly weren't fired up or engaged. With the Supreme Court now back in the news it reminded a lot of those hold their nose Republicans why they should vote in November.

There's only 9 Republican senators up for reelection in 2018 and of those 4 are considered safe seats. 24 Democrats are up for re-election and only 14 are considered safe. It's a totally different story in 2020. |

I find the hypocrisy stunning, after what McConnell and the GOP did to Merrick Garland. But of course that's not going to matter to the GOP electorate. I didn't used to follow politics so closely. I'm so much more informed now than I was 4 years ago, and sometimes I still feel like I don't know much. I'm learning the value the GOP electorate puts on the Supreme Court this week. And maybe that's stupid to admit because I should have realized that that's what drove so many to the polls to vote for trump. |

You expected a seventh FBI check to reveal something that the first six, dating back over 20 years and reaching back to a time just after Kavanaugh got out of college and including the many years in the public eye, to suddenly find something different. Of course you're disappointed. I think you're going to be even more disappointed after the midterm elections. |

I thought from the beginning that the FBI investigation was just for show. "OK, we'll investigate for 1 week"--that looks good and shuts up opposition. With so many constraints on the investigation, it is a joke to call it an investigation.
And, after 30 years, what DID you think would be found? I will say, that having several classmates step up and say he was a rip roaring drunkard, should give the Senators pause--but it does not.

What now? We move on, of course. One day at a time. Vote in Nov. Encourage everyone in your sphere to vote. Keep in touch with your legislators. I said before that political power is cyclical. Dems will have their turn. In all the many decades of my political engagement I have accumulated a lot of losses but I’ve also had a lot of successes. Do not allow this to dampen your spirits and don’t lose faith in your government.

We didn't know about all the constraints on the investigation when the SJC first decided to ask for it. Perhaps I'm stupid for not realizing in that moment that Dr. Ford nor Kavanaugh would even be interviewed by the FBI. If you knew, congratulations.

Hugs, @merge and tara I went to the doctor with my mother 2 days ago. She was diagnosed with pseudodementia and I know this is all at least part of the reason. I feel like I would give Manchin a pass if he feels he needs to vote yes to win in November. There are so many fronts on which to fight and I'm not sure how much I care right now about a 100% No vote from the Dems. |

i think the republican senate confirming kavanaugh despite ALL they know about him and ALL the concerns that have been raised by the public, is the biggest FU to the country. kavanaugh is not the hill i would choose to die on.

This stinks to the heavens and I am with others who find it hard to be hopeful that truth and justice will ever prevail in this country again! |

Maybe they should vote in accordance with the wishes of the constituents who put them in office. Of course, that would mean that some Democrats would have to vote for confirmation; something I'm sure you're opposed to.

A very core tenant for Republicans, even moderate ones like me, are economic factors. In my experience, Republicans and even a portion of Democrats, Independents etc. vote their pocketbooks. As long as Trump has those indicators trending up, it's going to be hard to flip seats due to other society issues that need to be addressed. It WILL flip as politics and economics are very much cyclical. The question is when in my mind.
While is sounds deaf and harsh reasons to vote, at the end of the day, at least in my circle of Republicans, it's about government growing economic opportunity so that people have the option if they so choose, to change their circumstances through that.
The above is, of course, is very simplistic as we all know there are a myriad of other barriers that SHOULD be addressed which effect people taking advantage of economic opportunity. I'm just elaborating a bit more over Darcy's comment above as to the possibly "why" current polls show a GOP gain.

I don't know why I continue to be amazed at how so many people turn a blind eye to what was so obviously shown last week - that Kavanaugh is totally partisan, lied to the Judiciary Committee, and absolutely does not have the impartiality and judicial temperament to be a justice on the Supreme Court.
They don't seem to care at all about that because he will vote to do what they want - and protect the president and overturn Roe, etc.
The end goals seem to justify any means.
I try to stay optimistic that we can turn things around - but I can't help feeling some despair about the damage that is being done by this administration and the Republicans in Congress. I hope things change before they destroy or damage Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security; a lot of people will be hurt if there are major changes in those - and they are being blind or stupid if they don't think it can happen.
