@ig is there time to do multiple parks in one day or would it be best to focus on a park?
If you had to pick one Disney park to visit which would it be?
How is the experience different from the US parks? I'm most familiar with DLR but have also been to WDW.
How is navigating if you don't know the language?
Do you have any other recommendations for Japan?

Happy to answer and pea queries regarding these parks 😍 Please share a trip report or even what is the best, your favorite rides, foods, anything. I'd love to hear about it.

Our favorite Disney park is whichever one has Galaxy’s Edge in it.

caangel, no, just general, because we haven’t been to Japan. It’s why I only responded to those two questions. I think they apply to any of the Disney parks. We have only been to Disneyland (on our honeymoon, decades ago) and Disney World (4 times, most recently last fall). Each Disney park will have some unique aspects, as well as some of the same rides & attractions you’ll find at other Disney parks. If you do a multi-park pass at a Disney park that you have never visited before, you may miss out on some things worth seeing and doing because you don’t really have time to thoroughly explore the park when rushing from one park to the next in the same day. Just my opinion. I don’t know if Japan has Galaxy’s Edge. We’re just big Star Wars fans, and loved Galaxy’s Edge. It was truly unique, and had our favorite ride of all time. We’re going to Disneyland/California Adventure later this year, and are looking forward to going on Rise of the Resistance again. On our trip last fall, as we were exiting, we heard an enthusiastic voice say in a very Australian accent, “BEST RIDE EVAH!” We totally agreed with him. It’s a great ride, even if you aren’t Star Wars fans, but far more so if you love those movies. If you hate Star Wars, then skip it, unless you are going with others who are Star Wars fans. It’s your time and money. I recommend watching YouTube videos (especially if they have any on Disney Japan), because they really helped us see and do more of the things that mattered to us when DH and I went by ourselves last fall.

scrapnnana sorry for the confusion IG had offered to answer questions about the parks in Japan and my questions were specifically about those parks. I live 20 min from Disneyland Resort in CA, have had passes several times, most recently last year, and went multiple times a month. I'm very familiar with Disney parks in general. 😁 Also I'd never recommend anyone to skip Rise! It IS the BEST.RIDE.EVER! I am not a Star Wars fan but that is my favorite ride. Definitely a must see for everyone!

Alrighty peas strap yourselves in with the safety bar down cos this is going to be one hell of a ride aka long post re Tokyo Disneyland (let me know if you are interested in Universal Studios Japan too and I’ll do a separate one for that!)
Before I begin, I am an Aussie pea. The only other Disney trip I have ever experienced was wdw in 2004 during spring break in the time of fast passes and when the Caribbean resort accessed the four parks through buses and not the chairlift thing so please keep that in mind. Also keep in mind I was travelling with hubby and two kids who do not like roller coasters or drop rides on their first overseas trip ever 😁
Firstly for anyone who is anxious about traveling to Japan due to the language difference - don’t be, especially in Tokyo. With google translate and the local train system app (free in the App Store) we were easily able to navigate our way from the airport, to Tokyo Disneyland resort, and sightseeing around Tokyo with barely any problems. Many locals wanted to practise their English with us and we only had knowledge of a few basic words (hello, thank you etc) and made it work. Happy to go into more detail about the trains/subway etc if the details are of interest to anyone.
We stayed at the Tokyo Disneyland resort hotel. Main reason is no travel time to get to the Disneyland park (100m walk to security and entrance, or 50m walk to monorail and then about 5min ride to get to disneysea park) and you get the early entry which is almost mandatory for beauty and the beast, soaring and Toy Story mania whose lines did not go below 90mins the whole time we were there (we rode them in 30 mins though due to the early entry advantage). We have not ridden these rides anywhere else but I would think that they would be the same as those in the USA if your parks have these rides.
Staying at an official resort means you are guaranteed a ticket entry into the park even if you buy it the night before/day of. Tickets to these parks are offered three months in advance and can sell out super quickly. Purchasing tickets without a Japanese credit card can be troublesome/impossible so if you’re not staying at a Disney resort I recommend a site called klook to buy tickets (this goes for most Japanese experiences including teamlabs and universal studios). We could not pay via visa online for our tickets through the official Tokyo Disneyland website so bought ours the night before at the resort ticket counter.
Note that the parks can sometimes open earlier than the posted opening time, and people were lined up from 7.00am outside when the gates officially opened at 9.00. We went in off peak and in summer. Please make sure if you are going that you do not go in golden week or the summer holidays in Japan as I have heard that these times are ridiculously busy. For more information on when to visit I highly recommend tdr explorer or YouTube and the web - he is a Canadian who speaks fluent Japanese who regularly visits the parks and has heaps of great tips specific to tokyo Disneyland and disneysea. Going on a Tuesday and Wednesday if possible is best as the weekend and Mondays are pretty busy.
Do not run in the parks especially upon entry, they will yell at you and it is highly frowned upon/rude.
Get the Tokyo Disneyland app and look at it before you go to get an idea of what is popular and what is not in both parks - for instance the line for Star Wars was 5 - 15 mins most of the day, but baymax was 120 mins all day (we missed both of these as my kids have no interest in either.) The Star Wars ride from what I’ve seen online reminds me of the ride I rode 20 years ago so I think it’s very different to the one in the USA parks now! The app also lets you know which rides are down for maintenance, space mountain and Astro blasters were the two main closures while we were there.
All of the rides and shows we went on in both Disney parks were in Japanese (small world has some parts in English and so did pirates but that’s about all.) For me this was okay, but if you want to understand what’s being said this may be a deal breaker. For us, it meant that we were okay to miss the super popular stage shows that had huge wait times or lotteries for entry as we didn’t understand them 😁
Tokyo Disneyland and disneysea are two completely separate parks that require different tickets - there is no park hopping but you can get one pass out per park per day and you can get a half day ticket entry too to both parks. My way to describe them would be Tokyo Disneyland is like your magic kingdom park, and disneysea is a little Epcot (heavily Italian themed) with a little of the old mgm park and Paris Disney thrown in there (tower of terror, journey to centre of the earth, 20,000 leagues under the sea).
My kids are not into thrill rides so we missed a few longer queues as a result. Most rides at the Disney parks we could get on in around 30 mins by looking at the app and planning it out.
They still have splash mountain at Tokyo Disneyland.
Some experiences (shows, shops in peak seasons, photos with Mickey at the front of disneysea) have entry based on a lottery system where you scan your park ticket into the app and then request entry and either get it or you don’t - if you don’t get entry you can’t reapply for the same type of experience again that day.

If you have a Disneyland near you, and go regularly, then I would recommend disneysea if you had to choose one park or the other to go to. I would recommend disneysea if you are an adult and like things like ambiance and vibe, but Tokyo Disneyland if you want your traditional Disney experience (albeit in Japanese!)
Food and drink: drinks are readily available in vending machines and are super cheap (150 yen for water or about $1usd). Coke, water and iced teas are easy to find, if you like culinary adventures some of the larger machines have a lot more local fare (my kids loved the salty lichi drink!) There is no Diet Coke in Japan. There are enough western styled food options for you to survive with fussy eaters like mine, note the pizzas tend to come with bonus corn. If you are more adventurous there are cafes that sell ramen, omelettes and curries. These were not for us! Popcorn flavours are also worth investigating if you like expanding your palate - flavours like matcha and white choc, curry etc down to your standard caramel, salted etc. We spent about 12000 yen each day in the park on lunch, dinner and snacks which I think is pretty cheap for a theme park for four people (about $20usd each).
Pin collecting is NOT a thing here - in fact apart from a couple of pins and some blind bags in a couple of shops there weren’t really any in the parks. Also, from what I saw, there are no options to buy ride photos at Disney parks in Tokyo. Monsters inc had a photo displayed on a screen but once it was gone that was it. BE WARNED!.
You can collect souvenir pennies and they are scattered in stores around both parks, this seems like something that the tourists do as I did not see one Japanese local get any of these!
Duffy has a big presence in disneysea. What is Duffy… I have no clue apart from some form of show. Saved lots in that merch shop!
Japanese people do not sing to the songs on the rides. Or talk on monorails or trains as a rule. Again they see this as being rude (just as an fyi, I still busted out a word or too when the Disney spirit took over me on some of the rides 😊)
Japanese people love picnicking to eat. If you see a small mat on the ground do not move it as this is someone reserving the space. Sometimes they would put down mats in the middle of the larger walkways to eat, and this is how they save a space for the parades (spaces were saved at 2pm for the 7pm show.)
We are relatively physically fit but hindered by two tired small people. If we had wanted too we could have gone on each ride at each park in one (very busy and very tiring) day. We chose not to do that due to lack of interest, kids being scared of roller coasters etc. We got to about 20,000 steps each day we were at the parks (three days total, two at Disneyland and one at disneysea) so a park a day is possible but you’d better get Disney fit and be committed!
Lastly the parks close early (9pm from what I remember). Kiddy rides have faster wait times at the end of the day when the little ones have mostly gone home so if you want to ride those it can be better to wait to do so.
Overall I loved it, my husband was impressed, and the kids loved the parks even though they don’t really like any Disney characters and everything was in Japanese so I count that as a win!

For all food ordering: Some places have touch screens (English as an option) and most food shops have plastic replicas of dishes on display with a number next to them near a machine. Once you press what you want on the machine and pay you get a receipt. You hand the receipt to staff and they collect your order. This is for the theme parks as well as a lot of restaurants on the streets so technically for these places you don’t have to actually talk to servers at all! Alternatively most places had staff with enough English to put the order through OR they have a menu in English you can point at behind the counter that they bring out when they see you. If you are respectful and patient then you will have zero problems in Japan in any shop from my experience. One last piece of advice - cash is king in smaller shops in Tokyo etc, but cards are fine in all shops and carts in the parks. When paying for an item your cash goes on the tray on the counter, they will also put your change in this same tray. Do you have any other recommendations for Japan? Also visited in this Japan trip (pea message if you want more details I’ve taken up enough of this thread!): TOKYO Teamlab planets Tokyo - interactive art, everyone loved it even though the kids didn’t want to go initially Shibuya scramble crossing - worth seeing once Cat cafe - expensive, cats are sick of people and don’t come near you for a pat, go at feeding time if you must and then leave (bit of a tourist trap but the kids liked it) Imperial palace - serene, nice gardens Travelers notebook store in Tokyo metro station - go to the north entry to find it, if you like travelers company items they have limited edition ones only available here (this is the original company that created midori and tn notebooks from what I know!) Loft store - so much stationery! OSAKA (less English than Tokyo, a little harder to navigate around) Universal studios japan - don’t want to hijack the Disney thread but happy to go into more detail on this 😁 Nintendo store Osaka - kids loved it Osaka castle - worth the walk if you like history/culture, don’t take the lift to the fifth floor as the line is huge and all the interesting artefacts etc are on the first to fourth floors Dotonbori district - busy, lots of neon so go at night, street/food markets with massive 3d signs, kids and hubby didn’t get it but I could have stayed there and tried all the food for days! Try to travel on the subways/trains and get to your destination by 8-9am if possible to avoid crowds and peak hour which can be very squishy. They will literally put their bags in front of themselves and push until they fit onto the train even if you know there isn’t enough room. Quite an experience!

So much wonderful information, lg ! Thank you for typing that all up! Duffy used to have a small presence at Epcot, with meet & greets too, and my daughter was smitten with him! Once she dressed in a sailor suit and he fanned it up during their time together. She still has her Duffy Bear and can’t wait to see him again someday in Tokyo. 💙 It’s one of the few character interactions she still remembers (she was about 4, now 16). We are frequent flyers with California Disneyland, so I’d definitely research which rides are repeats and cross those off our must-do list. What a fun research project that will be! 😁 Question: when you’re talking about busy season, are you referring to Australia summer? So American winter?

@ig THANK YOU!! So much great information!
Once I know how many days and exactly when we are going I'll reach out again.
Also Duffy is Mickey's Teddy Bear. He had a presence at DCA for a while but I haven't seen him recently. I don't really know where he came from.

I haven't been around much lately buuuuuut I booked an impromptu solo DL trip for September 🙊 I'm Halloween bound for the 2nd year in a row! If you've seen anything I've posted in the last few months on the other side of the board you'll know things have sucked for me this year. A few weeks ago I saw my favorite band is going on a 10 year anniversary tour and playing at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney so I had to check ticket prices on a whim, duh right?! I saw the special California resident rates are back (and end literally that week) and feel it's the universe telling me to do something nice for myself (also because my mom bought me this beautiful Vera Bradley Weekender bag for my birthday last month and I need to use it lol). Hotel's been booked, concert tickets & Park tickets bought, all I have left is getting my Amtrak stuff squared away and food reservations when they open up. Travel is something like 8 hrs there and 10 hrs back but since I don't drive and it's nearly a quarter of the price of plane tickets I figured I'll get cozy and nap. In a weird "the universe has it's own motives" kinda way it's coincidently the same exact week had our big (read: expensive AF) trip last year that turned out to be a big mess of my mom getting me high, having an ear infection, and having to go to urgent care plus in hindsight even shittier knowing it was right at the start of my ex's affair. SO YEAH it's a week I really want to remake memories for and while I'm kind of depressed doing it alone deep down I know it'll be good for me. Or I hope? lol Also I'm doing the fancy ass $150 per head chef's table at Napa Rose because I'm worth it 💅 .. well if I get a reservation when they open lol I'm so excited reading up on trip reports again. Planning the Disney trips is easily at the top of my list of favorite parts of the whole ordeal. I've also still got all of the scrappy stuff I bought with the idea of doing last year's Halloween trip but since that'll definitely never happen now I want to make sure I use those products up this time around!

It's not 60 days out like everything else at DLR, but literally calling the number at midnight of the first day of the month 2 months prior to your trip and leaving a message. ..then hope they get back to you it feels like some speakeasy secret password kinda stuff

Has anyone used a notebook to keep track of what you do each day? We had a schedule of planned activities for our last trip, but things didn’t always go according to plan. As I have been trying to create a photobook of that trip, it’s been harder than I expected to remember what we did each day and when, vs. what we had planned to do.
Do any of you do a daily journal during your Disney trips? If so, do you take something less expensive, such as from Dollar Tree, just to take notes, or something nicer? I’m wondering if it will get beat up on the trip.

I have found using the Day one App to work better for me. I can write out my plan ahead of time for each day and then edit it in the moment. I am much more successful when using the app vs handwriting but YMMV

I just took a quick photo of the ride or show sign when we entered the line and then filled in my tn with any additional notes each night (what we ate etc) as the last thing I wanted to do was try and find a notebook or pen in my pack all the time. I did have two kids I had to entertain as well though in their first Disney lines, and didn’t want to be on my phone instead of chatting with them!

I’m wondering if it will get beat up on the trip. I've done this a few different ways, but the easiest (for me) and cheapest is buying index cards. I label them ahead of time, like "Day 1, depart home", "Day 2, Disney Springs". Sometimes I use a weather stamp so I can fill it in easy peasy during the trip. For journaling purposes, I'll screenshot with my phone certain things, like our Lightning Lanes or the app with our schedule. When we are back in the room, I'll play catch up and write down the few things that I don't necessarily have a photo of, quotes, etc. A general outline gives me what I need between it and the photo time stamps to jog my memory when I'm putting together the album.

Oh yeah and I also kept allllll the receipts as they are date and time stamped too so I sort and cross reference those with photos I took etc as I don’t go around taking photos of racks of merch for no reason 🤣 this gave me an idea of why there were a couple of blank times in my timelines each day, I was too busy shopping to go on rides or see shows 😇

I tend to write a daily email recapping the day when I take trips (in general) - it's still fresh in my mind and I get to include some of the smaller moments. I send to a family member but you can always send to yourself. Back in the years before email, yes, I took a school notebook to recap each day in. I also used it to keep track of my budget and what photos I took (predigital). Somewhere around here I still have the blue school notebook that I used when I went to Israel at 8

I had a photopass question, got an answer from a family member, so I deleted my earlier question.
Different question: if anyone has had to deal with salt restrictions, (or family members who did) are there restaurants/quick service restaurants you recommend that can accommodate it?

We don't have salt restrictions but my husband is vegan. Every restaurant there has been great about the food issues. I'm on a lot of vegan facebook groups where people are vegan or gluten free just because of allergies and everyone is always posting they've not had issues. Now, I will personally recommend that you make as many reservations for table dining as possible. It's not going to be as easy with a quick service place and it's not listed as an option in the mobile ordering.

I use the notes app in my phone! It's soooooo handy! I also love how easy it is to update. I never worry about space constraints and if I was rushing to add something, I can always go back in later to update. I will then transfer to my paper journal at a later date. I've even done memory keeping in my journal where I printed out a screenshot of my notes app. I rely heavily on my paper journal for all my scrapbooking.

I had a photopass question, got an answer from a family member, so I deleted my earlier question. Different question: if anyone has had to deal with salt restrictions, (or family members who did) are there restaurants/quick service restaurants you recommend that can accommodate it? For Sit-down restaurants, when you make reservations you can add it under "allergies". If it's not listed, just click other and then the server will ask you about and you can explain what you can/can't have or modifications/substitutions you know work. I'd look at the menus ahead of time, you may not know the salt, but I'm betting you have a good idea what stuff definitely doesn't work and what stuff while maybe not perfect would be okay. For Quick Service it may be a little tougher. I know they have binders that list all the ingredients for everything they serve. Because if you aren't mobile ordering it now takes FOREVER, I usually ask one of the cast members at the door/entrance and explain I don't if my husband can eat X, Y, or Z item. Before I want in line and waste my time and your time is there any way I can see the ingredients list. Everyone in Florida has been super great about this and some places in Disneyland, But NOT all. (Don't tell my husband to just try something he might be allergic to just try it and if it's a problem you'll change it!) The other thing I do, because my husband is hypoglycemic and has to eat more frequently and sometimes unexpectedly, is create my own little book of places to eat and menu items. So if he says I need to get something to eat in the next 15-20 min. I can say grab my book, flip to the pages for whatever park we are in and I already pretty much know what's close by, but can give him place and menu options. Usually I'll give him the closest, and then say or if you want to go a bit further there's also This pace and that place. Basically, a few weeks or so before we go I go through EVERY menu at each park we are going to and any I need for our hotel or Disney Springs. I take a legal pad, write down the name of the park and then start listing places to eat and possible menu items. (I also include stuff I want to make sure I try too!) Once I do this for all the parks, I usually run it by my husband to see what he thinks of the menu items I picked - now that's he's gone enough he'll ask me if I put certain places he's been and he's know are good on the list. Then, Finally I create a purse size notebook (usually from the dollar store) I put our flights, time, any airport transfer confirmation numbers, phone numbers, resort reservation numbers, Park reservations by the day and any dining reservations for that day, fireworks times, and then add my food section with my places and menu items. It is a bunch of work before hand, but for me it's worth it. When my husband needs food I just pull out that list and we're ready to go instead of scrambling and stressing out and wasting time trying to figure out where/what to eat. And I know for sure you can contact WDW about questions. And I just checked, Disneyland too. It says to contact them after you've made your dining arrangements.
