Maybe I shouldn't ask this on a public forum, because then "they" will know that you have a lot of cash to steal.
But here I am, asking.
I know people who do, and the topic of a conversation I had yesterday was the reason that people do this.
ETA: In answer to "how much is A LOT?" -- Over a thousand? I guess I'm referring to a sort of 'cash stash' where you purposely keep currency, as opposed to just randomly having a few bills because of other reasons, like the by-product of cash gifts.

I very rarely have any cash at home. Not even £5 for the window cleaner's monthly visit. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/R6yG4nI0YHiVm0wktwl4.jpg) I think I have about £30 in my purse at the moment, but that’s only because I’m not driving yet, so I can’t just nip out to an ATM if I need to.

I almost never have cash. A good friend of mine keeps tens of thousands in a vault, just in case. I'm not sure what constitutes "just in case" for him, but he works around government, so maybe I should take a tip from him. ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

Then yes. I live in an area where the “big earthquake” could hit any time. At the advice of my FP I keep some cash in the house.

Yes, we do - but its not just laying around. Its in our safe (and for anyone reading who wants to break in, its an xxx-large safe and very heavy. You will have to cut the safe out of the wall to get it out. And its locked).
I am not really sure why we still do now - we have always just had cash on hand. Originally, we kept the cash on hand because we were paying off debt and it was our starter emergency fund.

Yes, we have a cash stash in our safe, it is part of our overall preparedness plan for natural disasters or other unusual circumstances.

I rarely have cash on hand, or in my purse lol
I usually have a few $20's tucked away in odd places in the even that my kid "needs" a pizza or take out. I've cut back on this as he has a job now and is 18, and I don't feel "responsible" to provide him dinner every night.
I also have a few tucked away in two spots for dog walkers. They each have a spot they know where there is a bit of money and a key, that way if I get stuck in traffic or something last minute comes up, I can call them, they let themselves in, and they know where to get their payment too lol
My mom has 7k somewhere in her house that she hid. She managed to hide it from herself. I'm just sad because I 100% believe my brother (who lives there.....ugh....) wouldn't share the secret spot with her if he found/finds it. Grrrr

I personally don't but my husband does - lol
He has a decent stash in our safe. I guess it's mine too but I can never remember how to get into the safe so it doesn't do me any good.

If I have cash, I spend it. So besides taking out $20 a month for laundry, nope.

If you follow any kind of preparedness plan you should keep some cash on hand. What if the ATM is down, banks go under, stores are not taking credit cards, etc................

The brother that died had thousands hidden. My husband and I managed to find most of it before the other brothers did and put it in to the estate account. We are sure that the brothers found money and kept it, probably about 5 grand each. Because the house was such a mess,we can’t be sure if money got thrown out.
One of the wives started tossing papers from the desk and filing cabinet. I was pulling that stuff out of the trash. I found a couple of savings bonds..just about $5,000. We don’t know how many of those made it to the garbage.
Brother was afraid of not having access to his money and he was doing the envelope system to the max.

I'm lucky to have $10 in the house.
Once I had about $100 that I saved up in change for spending money for our trip last year.
Otherwise, no we don't keep cash around.
My mom saved up over $700 in change to buy herself a Sleep Number bed.. She finally took it in to get bills for it.. lol

No we don't keep a large emergency fund of cash, but we always have some cash because we have kids who play sports and around here you have to pay cash at the school for concessions and game admissions, etc. Also the movie theater only takes cash.

DH and I both carry a reasonable amount of cash at all times - I take out around €200 each time I make a bank withdrawal, and DH probably has a bit more. Why? Because we live somewhere that still is very much cash-centric. I pay for nearly all my 'everyday' needs in cash - groceries, snacks, etc

We have some new cash in the house as part of our earthquake emergency kit.
I still use cash, mainly for purchases under $10. So I do carry cash on me. And I like to leave cash tips at restaurants rather than on my card.

Ish. I take home my cash tips, which could easily be $500/day when we are busy. I usually work Wed-Sat, so by Sunday it wouldn’t be unusual for me to have $1500+ or more in my wallet. We use the cash to get groceries, pay for gas, etc. (I probably always have at least a couple hundred in my wallet at any given time.) I do like having cash on me to pay for things, tip valets, and hand out to kids as needed.
But I don’t think I would go withdraw a lot of money from the bank just to keep it in the house.

I put some cash to the side from every paycheck to save for the trip I'm taking later this year, but that's it. It isn't that much either, I think I'm at around $100 at the moment because I deposited some recently to cover the flight I booked. The rest will go towards the second half of my airbnb payment. It helps because if I see it in my bank account, I'll think I'll have a few hundred more than I do because the money has already been allocated. But I don't keep "what if" stashes, I don't make enough to even consider having one.

I'm lucky if a have a few singles in my wallet. ^^^ same here. if I have cash, I spend it- vending machine, soda from the gas station, etc. We never have cash unless we know we specifically need it for something. Heck, last Friday we went to an Oktoberfest thing downtown; we figured we could use our bank card for the beer tickets- we were wrong, so my DH had to go to an ATM around the corner. If we're having some sort of work done around the house and they work it out that it will be paid in cash, then my DH goes to the bank to get however much it will be- $400, $500, or whatever- but we don't just keep cash around. We also don't have natural disasters like earthquakes or fires to worry about, though, either.

We keep around $2000 in cash in the house as part of disaster preparedness. It should be enough for food and other essentials or needed services in case of an emergency that caused an extended power outage or took down other infrastructure. We kept more on hand when we lived on the coast, because extended large power outages were fairly frequent and though many businesses had generators, having cash was easier if you needed something (because phone/internet was down too sometimes, so you couldn't use a card anyway). It also made it easier to find people to do work that needed to be done ASAP in the immediate aftermath of storms - tree removal, roof repair, etc.
Even though I know cash is always a recommended part of an emergency kit, I probably wouldn't keep much if any on hand if we hadn't had those experiences on the coast. But having been through situations where it was a big benefit, we changed our ways.
That said, it's rare I have any cash in my wallet lol

No. Dh will often keep up to a $100 in tens and twenties to pay the kid down the street for mowing and other random cash needs. But no large piles of cash in our house these days.
Growing up my family was friends with an older man who would stash thousands in his house. Then he was broken into and they took $30k just from his couch. His daughter finally convinced him to put it all in the bank (he used the bank, he just didn't totally trust them so kept some cash on hand).
