How scary for your and your baby. I'm so glad you are both ok. I'm scared of pit bulls. I know owners often defend them by saying how loving they are, but I once saw a pit bull go from sleeping peacefully to attacking my friend in a flash. It happened instantly and the dog would not let go of her. Each breed has natural genetic tendencies and pit bulls are attack dogs.

I'm so sorry. Glad she is going to be OK. I've heard that scream - my heeler was also attacked by a pit bull-type dog at the dog park and she screamed. I'm not a breed hater, but it was a very scary experience. My dog was not entirely innocent - she snarled at the other dog when he approached her tennis ball. But still - not a reason to bite. Again, glad your dog is going to be OK. It is a terrifying sound, isn't it? And then I was screaming too. I'm glad your heeled is okay - I love that breed. I think Julee has one also that is at her feet in the pic she posted on AKathy's post a pic thread. That is so, so horrible. I'm so sorry your sweet puppy went through that. I'm really glad the owner of the other dog is (finally) taking responsibility. She should have done something about her dog after the first attack though. The sad thing is, people like that just don't respect canine instincts so they don't train them properly and they are the ones that wind up paying the ultimate price because their owners are idiots. It will take some time for your sweet Maggie to get over this. Took my Lucy about 3 months to fully get over her attack in 2009, but she did get over it. Maggie will too. ((((hugs)))) Thanks. I agree that people don't understand how hard it is to train a dog to suppress inbred behavior and also that while you can train a dog to suppress that instinctive behavior, it is still there and may come out in times of stress in even the best trained dogs.

I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, I know how you feel. It is terrifying. For us, the pit bull next door kept climbing our fence to attack our dog. He climbed and attempted to attack multiple times. He only inflicted damage twice. the first put our pup in the hospital overnight. The second time he was stopped because I was able to blind the pit in one eye. The dog took off, with a crushed eyeball thanks to the sharp end of the rake I broke over his back. The asshole owner had the audacity to ask me to pay for that hospital bill. Of course he didn't finish paying for OUR dog's visit.
Our worthless animal control released the dog after a 10 day quarantine. The dog climbed our fence a couple of more times and I had to resort to carrying my gun with me when I let my dog out to use the bathroom.
I'm so glad that the pit that owns the dog that attacked your puppy is being responsible.

I am glad your dog is okay! You too! And at least the woman and man helped out and the owner appears to be cooperating. Too bad they thought it was a good idea to take the dog for a walk knowing she is dangerous and has attacked before.
I hope you both have a good recovery from the bites.

OMG Elaine, what a horrifying experience! You poor thing, I was reading that holding my breath!
Thank goodness your sweet Maggie still loves you and is going to be okay. I agree with you, those are the hounds from hell and don't belong around the general population. <hugs> I am so sorry honey!

Elaine you're fighting enough health issues as it is and this isn't fair. Not that life is fair, but enough is enough. My heart was just breaking reading your post. Our furry kids can't advocate for themselves and when they're sick or injured it's traumatic for us. Maggie loves you and that won't change. Just keep pampering her and she'll be a happy doggie in no time. I'm also concerned about your wounds. Prednisone, aside from being the med from hell can cause infections to linger. So, do watch those wounds and at the first sign of a further problem ping your doc just to be on the safe side. I am so sad that this happened to both Maggie and you. Will you have time to do something really soothing for yourself this week? I know you have the kids to yourself right now, but what can you do to relax? Even a small something is essential for healing your heart as well as your body.

No one can imagine what it is like to see, hear, feel your own dog being attacked like that--especially when your dog is in the jaws of another! So glad he is alive!

Im so sorry for your Maggie being hurt. Hope you both heal quick. I just wanted to share a tip I learned a few years ago. When a dog is attacking, go behind them and lift their hind legs up, wheel barrow style. It causes them to release their jaw and free whatever they are clamped down on.

I also know that sound, and it's horrible. Our youngest dog decided to jump and land in a fishhook barrel cactus when he was a puppy, and got three of his paws stuck. Thankfully it wasn't anything serious, but still-- that sound is memorable, and not in a good way, at all.

I will agree with you to an extent that pits (and other aggressive breeds) do not belong in residental areas. I was attacked by one while walking my beagle. Had I not been wearing three layers of clothes and DH next me, the 3 inch scar on my back could be worse. The owner of the dogs (there were three, only one actually jumped on me, trying to get my beagle that I had picked up) packed them up and left so he would not be home when the police came. As a result, nothing came of it. The cop even said it wasn't a bite, but rather claws. Um, no asshole. It was a bite. I felt the damn jaw. You could see each tooth mark. There is one a few houses down from us now. We refuse to walk our dog by their house. She is not chained up, never restrained, no fence. For the most part, she seems to be trained enough that she'll obey when her owner tells her to stay. Unfortunately, a couple days ago, she was outside ALONE, not chained up, and charged two older ladies walking their dogs. She didn't seem aggressive but she scared the ladies, one of which was a neighbor of mine. We called the police and said there's a loose pit on our street. When the police came, there still wasn't anyone outside to watch this dog. She went right up to the officer who put her in his car and left. It was over an hour later before the owners went looking for it. I don't know if they figured out what happened or not. My opinion of these people went from being rather low to downright bottom of the barrel. They deserve to lose her, especially with several very young children in the house. At the same time, I have known some really friendly, dumb as a box of rocks pits. My ex has a pit mix. She's friendly, always happy to see me, but I also worry that one day, she'll snap. I just hope she bites my ex, not my kids. I do hope your puppy is feeling better today.

I'm almost physically sick from reading that. I am so sorry for you and sweet Maggie that you had to endure that senseless attack. I am so thankful that it wasn't much worse. I was so happy to read that she snuggled up with you last night when you got home. Give her a hug from me~

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. I'm very glad that Maggie is okay and recovering. I'm sure she will forgive you in no time.
I have also heard that sound. My Lhasa in my signature was attacked by a pit mix. Luckily the dog only managed to notch his ear really bad.

It really doesn't have to be a pit bull. My Golden was attacked by a Bichon. My dog fought back and did damage and we had to pay the vet bills. Little bastard. I hate frou frou dogs more than Pit bulls now

(((HUGS))). I'm so sorry that happened. I too fear pit bulls. Glad that you were able to save her. I've heard puppy screams and it's horrible. Once, not long after we adopted our Meeka (shih tzu) the neighbors dogs got in our fence gate and chased her. They are labs and usually pretty friendly but one did manage to get it's mouth on her (no bite marks etc, just slobber). Not sure if they wanted to play or hurt her. Either way she was screech horribly while running with dd trying to grab her and me opening the door to the house as I heard the commotion and yelled for her to run inside. I will never forget it. Poor baby shook for a long time and is now terrified if she even sees them on the other side of the fence and even a bit if she hears them barking.
Anyway (((HUGS))) for you and Maggie and fast recovery vibes.

Oh, I am so very sorry for both you and Maggie. Sending wishes for a speedy recovery (physically and mentally) to you both. Man, I love dogs more than I like humans, but I will admit that I am frightened by Pit Bulls. They are just too unpredictable. Yes, even Beagles bite, but the damage done is so much more brutal by PBs and other like breeds. I'll take a poodle attack over a pit bull attack any day. Again, hope you can heal soon and give your baby some love from me.

There has been a couple of attacks by pitbulls in this area recently - one on another animal and one on a baby - and it's horrific and frightening. I thought pitbulls were banned in this country. What's wrong with these people that think the law doesn't apply to them!
