I have only skimmed but I am horrified at what happened to you and your pup. I am so glad you are both on the mend and hope that in time the emotional wounds will lessen as well.
What you posted is one of my fears as I also has small dogs, 8 and 10 pounds respectively. I have only had one time where I felt unsafe walking them in my old neighborhood when a dog that was either extremely pregnant or had just had pups that we had never seen before came running towards us. My DH was walking ahead with one of the girls and I immediately reached down and picked up my dog and turned my back while calmly telling my DH to stop walking. I only got sniffed at and my DH yelled at the dog to go home and she turned and ran. We never saw her again. It was still scary because you just do not know. Like you, we knew all of the dogs in our neighborhood.

I'm glad you and your puppy are on the mend. What a terrifying thing to happen. I am not a fan of the breed.
When I take my puppies to the path for a walk, we've been lucky in that we haven't seen any aggressive dogs. I'm sure it'll happen and I'll probably look into a red pepper spray mentioned above. I have small dogs, lhasa apsos. One is just a year and the other 12 weeks. My bigger concern right now are stupid hawks. Our local PD put out an alert that hawks were taking small dogs under 15lbs (which both of mine are). I live in flipping Massachusetts for God's sake not the middle of Wyoming or on the great plains. Ugh.

I'm so sorry. It's crazy that this dog attacked another dog and was still walking around. I know your Maggie is your baby, but could you imagine if it was a child? I don't get people.
A friend's dd was attacked by a Dalmation. Second time the dog attacked a child and she needed over 100 stitches to her face (plastic surgeon did an amazing job, you can't even tell!) and this goofy women, who had kids in an out of her house because she taught dance in her basement, wouldn't put the dog down. Friend told her he would come and shoot the dog himself if she didn't have him put down.
Hope you and Maggie heal quickly.

How frightening that must have been! I can't even imagine. I can't believe those people had that dog out walking on the street with that kind of history. I'm angry and upset for you. I hope Maggie heals quickly.

You described what every dog owner fears. I hope you are both continuing to mend. How very frightening that must have been.

i have to tell you that reading your story is heartbreaking. I have tears in my eyes and i got the adrenaline rush just reading your story. please don't blame it on the breed. that dog was bad, but pitbulls aren't. i realize you probably won't take this into consideration realizing the pit just attacked your pup, but i promise you, they're not all attack dogs born to fight. That's not a promise you have any right to make. www.dogsbite.org/"DogsBite.org is a public education website about dangerous dog breeds, chiefly pit bulls". So clearly they're targeting pit bulls, not very reliable source for statistics on dog bites or "dangerous breeds"

So sorry that you and Maggie had to go through this horrific event. Being attacked by a dog is terrifying! I hope that you are both healing and Maggie doesn't become overly synthesized to being around big dogs.
I am a breeder of German Shepherds and many people are also afraid of the bred. Pit bulls on the other had are lacking a "doggie socialization gene" according to one of my friends who is a very responsible pit bull owner. I won't defend pit bulls, as the breed is a bit off. My Australian Cattle Dog, (Red Heeler) was attacked while she was swimming in the river. She screamed and swam away, had an infection a few days later as I didn't discover the actual puncture bites until they were infected and started to weep. An acquaintance owned an unaltered female and it killed one of the chihuahua's she had been raised with since 8 weeks!
My German Shepherds are very smart and highly trained . . . and very loyal! If anyone came on our property and threatened us it would not be pretty . . . and I am OK with that. When we greet guests our dogs are loud but are wagging their tails, reading our postures, and bringing over their toys. Of my last litter, 3 puppies were purchased because their new owners wanted a dog that was "threatening" to protect the family. One is in N. California in pot growing country, now the wife can walk w/ her GSD. Another the DH works nights and they are out in the country and he wanted a dog to alert when someone was around. Two puppies are therapy dogs in training, one for hearing, the other for PTSD.
I hope that your bills are paid by the responsible party!

We went on a real walk today. The first dog we came to was a very friendly GSD, but Maggie shrieked and ran under a parked car. I apologized to the owner. Her dog was really goody and friendly. We later came across a woman with a couple of Westies that I've known for years and a neighbor with a schnauzer mix. She was fine with the small dogs. We finished the walk with my neighbor. She did great. She didn't want to walk this evening, but it was around the time of the attack, so I'm okay with that and we will keep walking. Right now we are sitting on the couch - I'm watching a movie and pea-ing and she is teething on a rawhide. Last week she was chewing on something really hard and whe I took it out of her mouth to see what it was, it was one of her baby molars. Only dogs think it is fun to chew on their own teeth! Thank you all for your support and kind words. I will never be able to express how much they mean to me. Thank you. I love the refu-peas!

She is in off leash obedience and such a great dog now. But it wasn't easy getting her to this point. She appointed herself as guard dog for me and dd and she took that job seriously. We struggled her second year in 4-H because she was always on guard. This last year she has finally found herself and her place in our household. She is confident and at ease while we camp and at 4-H. It's been nice having people see the dog we know but they didn't see until now We get compliments just about everytime we take her out now. So much nicer than when I was constantly worried how she would react. Elaine I'm really glad Maggie is feeling better and is getting outside now.

This is just awful for both you and your pup. Two doors down is a rental house and I have seen their pit bull off lease and they have no fence. My Chihuahua's wouldn't stand a chance. Thanks for the reminder and I hope your little one feels better soon.

I have witnessed three different children being attacked by three different GSDs. Horrifying doesn't begin to describe it. I fear that breed like non other.

Not 'targeting pit bulls' or any other breed at all, but if you look at the charts, you will see that pit bulls are mentioned more than any other breed that I could tell. Not many poodles or beagles listed. Hmmm.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_dog_attacks_in_the_United_States

My son has a dog that has a pitbull/lab mother and a beagle father. I haven't seen any aggressive behavior. Do you think that mix would allow for the pit part of her to be minimized?
She is a year old just now and sweeter and nicer than any dog we've had with people, other dogs, and eve our house bunny. I hope reading this that it is possible the pit won't surface.

Any dog can become aggressive at any time...you might hope that this dog's pit won't surface---one never knows with ANY dog. They are animals and yes we love them. I can't imagine my Abbey attacking anyone but crap happens.

Maggie is continuing to do great, but hates going out on the leash. We will work on it daily.
Here she is on the couch watching SNL with me:

I read a few local stories similar to yours and am saddened to see how many attacks there have been lately. Your Maggie looks like a teddy bear with her big soulful eyes! How're your hands doing?

She is a living walking Ewok! I'm not sure what is going on; whether there is a true uptick in vicious dog attacks, or if social media makes us more aware of them, or both. I am down to only one bite that is still bleeding and draining - and that was where a chunk was taken out of my palm - so I think I am in the clear. Thank you for asking and thinking of us!

I will agree when you see any statistics, Pit Bull will almost always be listed as #1 breed for dog bites that result in death because there's no argument, Pits are much stronger and can do a lot of damages when they bite.
