OMG - I just know how I would probably feel and react had that happened to my dog - Poor Maggie! I know you were terrified! Thank goodness that dog didn't turn on you after you got ahold of it.
My BFF's neighbor has a pit bull and they had a Chihuahua. The pit bull attacked the Chihuahua once and caused the poor thing to lose one of its eyes. They should have gotten rid of the pit bull then but they didn't so you can guess the rest of the story....a few weeks later the Pit Bull killed the Chihuahua. These people have a 2 year old. My BFF told them they need to get rid of the dog before it attacks the child but they won't do it.
A couple of weeks ago, the same dog killed my BFF's cat - it was horrible. The dog got lose and ran for the cat, I will save everyone the gory details - it was so sad - my friend was devastated. She loves her neighbors but they won't get rid of this dog. The dog even bite the 2 year old on the cheek causing her to require 4 stitches and they STILL keep the dog.
I guess the only way they will get rid of it, is if the dog attacks one of them or kills their child. My BFF reported the dog to Animal Control but they said they can't do anything if the owners won't release the dog.
I know Pit Bulls can be sweet - but I also know they can turn so quickly - it is in their nature.
I often say that a wolf is a canine, a coyote is a canine and they were not domesticated, perhaps pit bulls were not meant to be domesticated either.
I'm glad Maggie (and you) are going to be okay - so sorry you had to go through such a traumatic experience.

I'm so glad you both are physically ok. I hope you both recover emotionally soon as well. I'm scared of Pitts, too. know I would have a hard time returning to walks without panic-y feelings. It is utter crap that the dog wasn't taken care of after the first attack. I wonder why the lady chose that dog in the first place if she couldn't even control it?! WTF was she thinking?

I'm so sorry. We have an owner of 3 Pitts here on the board, who just had a baby. I can't tell you how often I think of her baby.

I have been in a similar situation twice... Once with a Pit and once with a Rottie. In the first instance, the Rot came into my yard and ran off with my kitten, which did not survive. The second time, a Pit picked up my Shih Tzu puppy (who is now 12 years old, thank goodness) and tried to run off with her like she was a chew toy. Thank goodness she was on a leash and I was able to hang onto it. I really try not to be judgemental about dog breeds, because I think so much of it comes down to owners and how the animals are raised and trained. But those two breeds still make me a bit nervous.
I am so, SO sorry you and your dog had to go through that. It's terrifying. I hope your pup makes a full recovery.

That is awful. My bil was attacked by a pit bull when he was seven. He still has major scars up and down his arm. I was walking my dog, a beagle, and pit bull was out. It had gotten free from its fence. It ran over to my dog but luckily it just sniffed. A police officer drove by as I was walking away. I flagged him down and he got the dog. I hate pit bulls. I wish they were outlawed. I don't understand why people want to own an animal like that.
When we got our dog I researched dangerous breeds. I wanted to make sure we were getting a nice one. Pit bulls were responsible for 66 deaths over a ten year period. The number two dog was responsible for around 10. Those numbers there made it hard for me to believe that they are a sweet gentle breed like some people claim.

How horrible! I'm so glad that Maggie is home safe and sound now. That entire episode would haunt me for a very long time. You have every right to feel how you do about Pit Bulls. I hope the lady does in fact pay for all of your medical bills. Sending healing thoughts to you and Maggie.

There has been a couple of attacks by pitbulls in this area recently - one on another animal and one on a baby - and it's horrific and frightening. I thought pitbulls were banned in this country. What's wrong with these people that think the law doesn't apply to them! Yes, they are banned but apparently they were still being bred illegally on a small scale by people who didn't agree with the law. These two belonged to the same bloke who told everyone they were cross breeds. He was walking them one day when one suddenly went after a small dog and the other went after the owner of the dog and then changed tack and attacked the baby. I still sometimes wonder if he thinks now that it was worth defying a law he didn't agree with.

elaine, I felt my heart beat faster just reading what happened. I am glad both of you are okay. This is exactly what I was going to say. I realised that I was actually holding my breathe while reading. I'm so glad you were able to save your precious pup - she was very lucky only to get the injuries she did. My blood runs cold when I think of what might have happened.

Those numbers there made it hard for me to believe that they are a sweet gentle breed like some people claim. IME, it comes down to three main reasons. Someone wants to feel big and bad and having a tough dog makes them feel tough. Drug dealing. Lastly, it's becoming very un-PC to say anything about a particular breed. All the "it's not the breed, it's the owners" BS. So some people want to show how "with it" they are and prove they're right by having a sweet pit. Problem is, behavior is CLOSELY related to genetics in dogs. That's why you can say that a Golden is typically laid back and great with kids. A toy poodle is nervous and high-strung. A German Shepherd is decisive. Pits and other bully breeds were bred to be on the attack. And unfortunately, due to dog fighting, they were bred over and over for fighting other dogs. I saw an interview about research being done to breed out aggressive behavior. It takes at least 8 generations of very selective breeding (which I doubt any of the people mentioned on this board can actually do themselves) to breed out aggressive behavior.

I am so sorry that happened and so glad your baby is ok. I have heard of too many dog attacks to ever approach a strange dog even on a leash while I am walking my dog, I turn and go the other way. My moms chihuahua was attacked by a mutt and didnt die of injuries but did die of shock later.
I hope you two heal quickly.

I saw an interview about research being done to breed out aggressive behavior. It takes at least 8 generations of very selective breeding (which I doubt any of the people mentioned on this board can actually do themselves) to breed out aggressive behavior. Yes, that is true for all animals without the brains that humans do, and a large frontal cortex. Think of bees, for example, they have very complex sets of behavior that is all genetically controlled. They live in hives and build bee hives all due to genetic code. Dogs have been been bred for over a thousand years to do different kinds of work - from herding to ratting to guarding to being companions to fighting. A large portion of their behavior is controlled by genetics. You "might" be able to train a golden to herd sheep, but it will take a LOT of work and effort. Meanwhile, a border collie will exhibit many of those desirable behaviors with little training, mostly shaping. One often has to train borders NOT to herd the family or groups of kids running pell-mell at the playground. Pitbulls are bred to have fighting encoded in their genetics. That is who they are, just as herders are who border collies are (my first dog was a border, I had him 13 years). There are plenty of Pitbulls who are sweet to their owners, but their genetics shape who they are at a basic core level. And I don't want that strolling my neighborhood any more than I want coyotes or bobcats out walking the sidewalks.

I am so sorry you & your puppy were attacked by a pitbull. It is definitely one of the most frightening feelings in the world to be attacked by a dog, and/or to see someone you love be attacked.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Maggie thanks you too.
We have lived in this townhouse for 11.5 years now. Our border collie passed just before we moved here. We didn't get a dog here until 5 years ago, so we lived here basically for 6 years before we got a dog and knew very few people in our neighborhood. Once we got our Wheaten and I started walking her, I got to know scores of neighbors. Now between Bella, our recently deceased Wheaten, and Maggie, our Wheaten/Cairn/Cavalier mix puppy, I know so many neighbors in a 2 mile radius.
Having a dog, and being committed to walking her, has been great in terms of integration into the neighborhood. I am a firm believer in the cohesive power of dogs - they can bring neighbors and neighborhoods together in ways that wouldn't happen without them. I think that makes it all the more important that people not tolerate aggressiveness in their dogs, especially if they come in contact with other people or their pets.
Aggressive dogs can be more dangerous than guns, because they have four legs to chase their prey of their own volition.

Lots of healing (physically and emotionally) to both you and Maggie.
I still vividly recall my dog (on a leash) being attacked by the St. Bernard down the street...more than 35 yrs ago.

I'm so sorry Elaine. Hope your baby heals quickly.
This is one of my fears. Not a just with pits, but any large, aggressive dog. We have 2 four pound chihuahuas, so they wouldn't stand a chance. Does anyone carry dog spray like mace that works well? I need to look into getting something to protect my little guys.

I'm so sorry!! I'm glad she's on the mend, but what a terrible ordeal. Right after DH and I got married I was at my parent's house. My old childhood kitty (he was 14 at the time) wanted to go outside to lie on the porch. He never ventured from the porch. A neighbor's pit from down the street came onto my parent's porch and mauled him. We had to put him down because there was just nothing to do for him. It was devastating.
