Nobody is forced to participate in a thread. Nobody is holding them down so that they have to continue to read opinions they don't agree with. "Diffusing" a disagreement is not your job. And seriously? Evil is not flourishing because someone with a different opinion is voicing it.

I don't think doing anything on here is anyone's job but certainly diffusing an argument is part of what makes a message board work, part of a normal conversation among a huge and very diverse group. Why shouldn't someone aim to do that if they want to?

It's not bullying any more than intentionally trolling or shit stirring. So feel free to ignore it if you don't approve. I think it's bullying when the group's intent is to drown out someone's opinion that they don't want to hear. It was different on a thread where you have an actual troll that stated his purpose was to "beat some record". (of trolling I guess) But when you have an actual Pea who's opinion's and style the group doesn't agree with and their answer is to gang up and drown out their thread, that's bullying. Actually that isn't true. If you want to call bullying bullying then be accurate and truthful. "Cyberbullying" is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. When one person shares an opinion and others don't agree and try to change the conversation, that is how the internet works.

That you equate what are essentially political opinions that are opposite of yours (because really we all know that's what we're talking about), it is over the top. I don't agree with your position but shutting you down is not my job and calling you evil is beyond ridiculous.

Racist statements are not valid political opinions--they're just wrong.

Sometimes I feel like I need to say something, sometimes I find that someone has said it better and sometimes I think it best to keep my opinions to myself. Every now and then I go back to the original post and reread it over and over again because I don't see what everyone else is seeing-good, bad or indifferent and wonder how people read so much into what was written.
But my actual engagement level is usually a product of my mood for the day. It's like living with teenagers and picking your battles. If I think I can keep going with the circular arguments, then I will. If I know I just can't do it, I won't. And sometimes I am surprised to find that the disagreement I am anticipating doesn't even happen.

And seriously? Evil is not flourishing because someone with a different opinion is voicing it. Evil flourishes if wrongs go unopposed. Have you learned nothing from history? Thank you for putting it so eloquently! Better than I could!! This is why I started to engage --the posts were so offensive and despicable that I felt I needed to say something. I thought that there were others who might believe the hate and crap that was being posted. Posting the photos was not to bully anyone--in the thread they lightened up those who were upset/affected by the OP's offensiveness. I find it really crazy that the people who are "engaging" and for the most part trying to do the right thing of diffusing the offensive posts are the ones being called out and taken to task here. To respond to those who are shouting that the ONE OP is being picked on--take a look at the history and the offensiveness of what that OP continually does. It's not a difference of opinion that many are bothered by, its the words she uses, it's the levels that she stoops to, the kinds of articles being posted...she's pretty much the ONLY one doing it here--she starts out stirring the shit, and those who respond to her because they offended are screamed at by those who defend her. Not to mention that most of the time, those who engage her don't start off antagonistic, they repeatedly try to educate her or lend truth and facts to the convo which she ignores and continues on with her brand of ignorance. Going back to the OP's question on this thread, I don't believe that she meant it as a call out to anyone, while the timing of it makes a few suspect of her motive, but at the same time, people have spin off threads for a lot of things here and I see this thread as just that, a spin off. just think if she would have posted this when there was no drama, she probably would have been accused by someone as trying to stir up shit.

That you equate what are essentially political opinions that are opposite of yours (because really we all know that's what we're talking about), it is over the top. That is absolutely not true. Topics that come in for that sort of response are sometimes political but also frequently racism, homophobia, discrimination on all sorts of grounds including physical differences, and so on and so on.

I think it's disingenuous to say that this only happens on racist threads. And based on some things I read here, I think that word and others are used rather liberally. And I'm sure there will now be those who say I'm racist for not recognizing that they're all racist. But I think I'll survive that insult.

And seriously? Evil is not flourishing because someone with a different opinion is voicing it. The same could be said to you, then. Don't agree with what is going on in the contentious threads and pics of jello - don't read them - no one is holding you down. Hand-slapping and putting people in their place is not your job. See, it goes both ways. But, my guess is that you are getting some satisfaction out of posting on this thread - a few times - and so maybe you can see why others post on contentious threads in ways that satisfy them. And, homophobia and racism aren't "political" they are evil, hateful, and are personal insults to some members on this board. If you are white and straight, maybe you don't get it.

I also believe that there is a big difference (that a few seem to make convoluted) between "having a difference of opinion" and "being offended by". They are different.
There are a few who lump everything into "you just don't like her opinion" when it's often so much different than point of view.

Many of us have been posting regularly here for a long time and have a good idea of the attitude and character of other regular posters, based on the content of their past posts. You know what they say: when someone shows you who they are, believe them. Some people here have shown us that they are racist, homophobic, small-minded, xenophobic or just plain ignorant (and proud of it) based on the content of their posts over the years. People's replies to their posts are colored by that past knowledge, and maybe that is perceived as bullying to someone who doesn't have the same experience with those posters. Perhaps it doesn't always happen on racist threads, but that's the effect of past knowledge. When you continually show the worst side of yourself, that's what people will believe about you and they'll respond accordingly.

Some people like to argue.... And occasionally there are intelligent responses are intelligent. People do not have to agree for it to be a good argument. But it is sometimes fun to consider another's point of view.

I agree that it can happen to adults too but I don't think it is here. Do you? I think we need to define "here". Pile-ons happen but no doxing, so I agree...I haven't seen real cyberbullying here. Now, that ol'smack blog...that's a much different story. I would say it most definitely did happen there, but there was connected to here so, did it happen on the open board? No. Did it happen behind the scenes? Yes.

The problem with this train of thought is that what is considered racist, homophobic and discriminatory is the eye (ear?) of the beholder and it varies from person to person. I would suggest that in recent years that line of speech has been dumbed down, if you will, so that just about anything can be included. It has become a tactic of the left to define any speech they don't like as derogatory so as to quickly shut down the discussion since there is no adequate response.

I can't comment on the possible left wing political tactics since I know what I've learned here about that I think an example is what happened to Justin Timberlake this past weekend. He tweeted that he was inspired by a speech. Inspired! Positive comment, right? He got so much hate for his comment and responses and some suggested he was racist because he was stealing black culture and music for his private gain and he couldn't possibly understand or be inspired. I don't get it and that's essentially what I mean by in the eye of the beholder. Racist to me would have been JT saying "*igger ain't cool talking that sh*t". Apparently racist to others is making good dance music and saying he's inspired.

Issues of race and crimes, restitution etc All hot topics that need to be challenged and discussed. But because it was this particular poster she was, within the first 7 or so posts, dismissed, told to go to school and learn something, accused of having a chip on her shoulder and another poster called her a troll and told the rest of us not to have a conversation with her. a further clarification on 'silence equals acceptance' and why some people see it this way: In real life, yes, we could use 'the look' or make a face, whatever, to show our displeasure with what's been said. But on paper / in the written word, you can't do that. Sometimes I DO let things go, and just scroll on by... but then, sometimes the person will write, "see??? no one has posted opposing what I've said, so therefore, no one disagrees with me and I am right!!" In real life, I would be much less apt to get into a heated debate over things that I disagree with, especially with a person who I am certain will not change their mind. But here, when the lack of an opposing viewpoint is occasionally USED by a poster as PROOF that their viewpoint MUST be the prevailing one, I just can't let it go and have to voice my opinion. --now bring on the kittens!! (no hoses, though-- kitties don't like water!)

The fact that I'm white and straight. In today's world once that is thrown, any response I might have is null do to my whiteness and straightness. LOL! Pull on your big girl panties. I'm white and straight too. But somehow I manage to see how offensive and hateful the racist and homophobic comments are. I simply proposed that as a possibility as to how you possibly could miss it - I didn't even know that you were white or straight, which is why I used "IF you are..." But if having your own words reflected back at you about what you are yourself doing and how you yourself are behaving causes you to take your Barbies and go home, that is certainly your choice. NSBR certainly isn't for the thin-skinned.
