Bring on the flames! Lol -- We watched it last night and honestly it was just okay. If someone gave me a ticket to go see it in person of course I'd go because it would be an experience. But I don't really like rap-style music, plus I had a hard time understanding much of what they were saying. The songs that were non-rap style were easier to understand. I thought the king was funny, and my favorite from the main performers was Angelica, and I annoyed dd by saying that I didn't particularly care for the sister who married Hamilton. hahaha (I live to annoy my kids with little things like that... ) Come in and tell me I'm not alone in this, since my entire FB feed is taken up with posts such as "OMG "HAMILTON" WAS SO GOOD!!" and "wow! so great!" and "Wasn't "Hamilton" SO GOOD???" lol

But I don't really like rap-style music, plus I had a hard time understanding much of what they were saying. This is the reason I don't have any interest in seeing Hamilton. I saw his earlier play, In the Heights, and struggled through the entire thing. Not going to bother with Hamilton. It is comforting to know I am not the only one who isn't a fan because it sure feels like it around here!

I haven’t watched it because, like you, I do not care for that type of music. But if it inspires people to be interested in history, then it’s all good.

I'm a Hamilton lover - my sister was just "meh" on it -- glad to have seen it as a cultural phenomenon, but didn't care for the rap style (couldn't understand the narrative), and really hated the ending. I wish I could have found my CDs that included the lyrics in written form - that might have helped. But -- once something has become so BIG, I think it is more difficult for the "real thing" to meet the expectations of those who haven't experienced it.

We saw Hamilton in NYC last year and thought it was amazing. My daughter has been listening to the soundtrack every day since forever, so we knew most of the songs by heart when we saw it. We were so excited to see it again, with the original cast, but it was a bit of a let down. It lost the immersive experience of seeing it in the theatre, but it brings it to people who haven’t seen it or won’t be able to because tickets are crazy $$$, so that’s a trade off I am willing to make. Even my daughter said “I am a little disappointed by this”, and we discussed that seeing things in a different format brings an experience not like the first time you saw it. I think it will ignite a life long passion for theatre for her.

Not my thing. I'm not really into any musical, but add rap, I don't think so. I would go see a Broadway play for the experience, but I would have to really scrutinize the line up when I was there to find one I would be somewhat interested in.

I listen to rap and hip hop all the time so that's not why I don't like this. I don't like stagey productions, I don't like the leaping and twirling choreography, I don't like musicals.
For some reason I really loved John Legend's Jesus Christ Superstar, probably for all the reasons it received criticism.
I tried but it's just nah.

I can see why you didn’t really like it if you didn’t know the songs. There’s a reason why we all say to listen to the music ahead of time! It’s just too many words to pick up in the first listen.
When we watched it last night, we put up subtitles. It was great and DD both caught words we had been singing wrong for years. We had a grand time singing along, though!
And watching it really confirmed to me that the best seats are in the first row of the balcony. That’s where the opening was shot from and you really have a great seat!

I do like a lot of the songs, the performers, the staging, and the dancing. I thought it was too long - it was too far-reaching - it tried to tell too much story. At the 2 hour mark, I was ready for it to be over.
And I was confused by LMM's portrayal of Hamilton. He seemed sort of lacking in confidence, shy, and overpowered in a way. But you wouldn't really describe Hamilton using those adjectives based on his actions. Maybe that's just LMM's personality coming through? I'd be curious to see it performed by a different actor. (Vocally, he was definitely out-matched by the rest of the cast.)

Musical theater is not my thing, which is funny because I was a part of a musical theater group as a child. Maybe it brings up too many cringe worthy memories?

I love musicals and broadway but I'm meh on Hamilton. I saw it live in Chicago and we rewatched last night. (My kids saw it on Broadway before we saw it in Chicago and thought the Chicago cast was better.) I think the music is phenomenal, but the production is so music-and dance-centered and otherwise minimalistic. And you really have to focus to keep up with the dialogue and characters. I was a little bored and there were a lot of sleeping kids when I saw it live. I guess I like my musicals big and bright and flashy.
I saw a local production of In the Heights and preferred it to Hamilton, although the local production quality was just ok. I would definitely go see a broadway or national tour, and am looking forward to the movie.

That a whole new group of people will be exposed to and come to appreciate theater. I thought it would be a letdown for a lot of people because of all the hype, but that had they experienced it a theater first that would be less likely. Like you, I love the access for the masses that otherwise wouldn’t get to experience it. We feel super fortunate that, having seen it live, we were able to enjoy this as something that enhanced the musical for us because there are so many details you just can’t catch in the theater.

when I saw it on Broadway with ds I expected to endure it for his sake. But I loved it!
With that said, I understand bc I just don’t know why everyone loves Phantom of the Opera. I watched when it was available on Tv and had a hard time following. Reading about it just sounds like he was an abusive stalker. I just don’t get the love for that show.
So you’ll get no complaints from me for having a different opinion.

If this had been my introduction to Hamilton, I would have been disappointed.
We saw it and were able to sit 3row center, so COMPLETELY immersed in what was happening. Seeing the faces,Seeing it all up close was what cinched it for me. There is something to be said for in person, for sure. But not everyone can afford ( or has proximity to) an in person experience. For those people it can be of HUGE value.

I tried to read the book but it is so dense and I got to page 80 (page 160 in a normal book) of 800+ before giving up... The musical has to be better than the book, right?

I'm not a fan of musicals in general so I've never watched any of the popular plays or shows. Same with movies. If it's more singing and dancing than talking, I'm not going to like it.
I may check it out on Disney+ simply because we have it but I doubt I'll watch the whole thing.

We don’t get Disney plus (that’s where it was shown, right?) so it wasn’t an option for me to watch. That said, even if it was, I wouldn’t have watched probably. Oh, I might have turned it on to check out the hype and because I generally really like musicals. But Hiphop/rap isn’t my thing and the story doesn’t grab me. But if I had free in person tickets I’d go!

I think being on Disney+ means it's not coming to the masses. I don't have Disney+. Once something is hyped as being the best thing EVAR, it's hard to live up to the hype for the uninitiated. It was many years before I watched Forrest Gump due to the never-ending hype. I knew it would never live up to it, and it didn't.
EDITED FOR CLARITY!

I think I’m more disappointed by folks saying they don’t like it because it is a “rap musical”. It is so much more than that 😢 I will listen to anything. But more people that you realize have a very limited appreciation for different musical genres. I don't fault someone for not liking something I like. Just so long as they don't expect me to only like what they like. It makes road trips with DH challenging. Sometimes I have to just put in my earbuds so I can listen to what I want.

I loved the book and read it before lin... and I saw hamilton in the theater. it blew me away there.. as engaging me at all times.. but then I knew the story. the more interest we can get in the real life of the founders in our culture, the better. Not perfect men.. or women.. full of flaws and problems.. but created something greater than they imagined. they should not be deified or totally dismissed. I thought seeing it on tv was ok. missed the audienve.
