I think being on Disney+ means it's not coming to the masses. I don't have Disney+. Once something is hyped as being the best thing EVAR, it's hard to live up to the hype for the uninitiated. It was many years before I watched Forrest Gump due to the never-ending hype. I knew it would never live up to it, and it didn't. EDITED FOR CLARITY! According to DH, LMM recently said it would still eventually be released in movie theaters.

I think I’m more disappointed by folks saying they don’t like it because it is a “rap musical”. It is so much more than that 😢 But that's the format it is in. And not everyone has to like that format. Many of the songs are not rap. One Last Time, it’s quiet uptown, satisfied - some of the best songs are not rap. Also Jefferson was purposely portrayed with a blues tone (see the song what did I miss)

I didn't find it to be RAP at all!! it's more like a typical musicale where they sing instead of talk? it doesn't feel rappy to me at all! If the reason you don't watch Hamilton is because it has rap music, I would give it a try. It doesn't feel like rap at all! and put on CC!

Eh, people like what they like.
I’m a big theatre lover and I hate Wicked. I hate Cats.
Doesn’t mean those things are bad, just means they aren’t for me.
Hamilton means a great deal to a lot of people (including me - I think it’s absolutely a staggering work of artistic genius) but I totally understand people saying it’s not for them. Just don’t try to convince me it’s not good. It may not be for you, but someone can’t say “it’s not good” - it’s all in the eyes of the beholder.

I agree about not all of it being rap or hip hop. My favorite songs aren’t either - Wait for It, The Room Where it Happened, It’s Quiet Uptown, and anything sung by King George. I’ll admit the idea that it was all rap and hip hop kept me from listening to the cast album when my kids were in their Hamilton phase, but when I finally did I was pleasantly surprised at the mix of genres. For me it’s Wicked that doesn’t live up to its hype, even though I’ve seen it twice. Different strokes... .

If anything, the knowledge that some of the music is rap makes me want to watch Hamilton more.
What I object to with musical theater is the whole over emoting, jazz hands and exaggerated body movements. I like to be swept up and lost into a story, but I can’t with all the stuff going on that’s like a distraction. It’s like the story suffers to the aggrandizement of the actors and stage sets, if that makes any sense.

Imagine Hamilton is parsnips. I tried parsnips a few times. I don't like them. It doesn't matter that lots of other people like them, or that they have health benefits or that I should support the parsnip farmers. I tried them, I don't like them. It's great that you like them. But you constantly telling me that I'm wrong to not like them isn't going to change my mind. You can have my share of the parsnips and I will have your share of the beets.

I can never pick a favorite song, but I always end up being pulled toward "Wait For It." Death doesn't discriminate Between the sinners and the saints It takes and it takes and it takes And we keep living anyway. We rise and we fall and we break And we make our mistakes. And if there's a reason I'm still alive When everyone who loves me has died I'm willing to wait for it. However, I didn't like the CD much the first time I listened to it either. Based on my own experience, Eliza's songs are the most similar to other musical theater. "Take a Break" was the first one that became an ear worm for me. "That Would Be Enough," "Burn" and "It's Quiet Uptown," I would never classify any of them as anywhere close to rap or hip hop. Then I would say Aaron Burr's songs, "Wait For It," "The Room Where it Happens." Room is a jazzy show tune that I really just want to say is too cheezy something, but then the "click, boom" gets me and I forgive it. And Washington's "History Has It's Eye on You" and "One Last Time." If someone is struggling, but willing to give bits a go, I would try those, on YouTube or something. Not try to watch the whole thing beginning to end. Like Shakespeare, most of us don't start out reading plays beginning to end. We are exposed to scenes, break them down, find their meaning.

I'm not a fan of musicals in general so I've never watched any of the popular plays or shows. Same with movies. If it's more singing and dancing than talking, I'm not going to like it. I may check it out on Disney+ simply because we have it but I doubt I'll watch the whole thing. There is almost ZERO talking. If you are willing to give it a chance read a synopsis of the plot and turn on your closed captioning. Makes a huge difference if you are not struggling to catch every lyric, there are a lot and they can be fast. While yes there is "rap" music as others have mentioned it is not all rap. Even the rap that is there is more musical theatre rap than radio station rap if that makes any sense. Listen to the songs suggested above for the non-rap songs. I have not see a live production (had tickets for September that got cancelled) but I'm glad I got to see it this way first so that I can truey take it all in when I see it on stage. What I loved and amazed me was how each character has his/her own musical style and how that was interwoven and combined with other character song styles depending who was on stage/speaking/interacting.

I wouldn’t call it hip hop... rap?? Not really. Maybe Hercules Mulligan is the true rapper part More like poetry. Also the soundtrack is more sing Songy then the live version. I love the way they edited two F words
I didn’t remember so many things probably because I was so excited to be there. I thought it was a good representation and it has been 4 years for me. Thanks for the advice about subtitles. I will watch it again.
Exceeded expectations. Jonathan Groff and David diggs underwhelmed. Lin- Manuel and Leslie Odom JR.
Voices werent 100 percent. Seemed a little raspy. Maybe because they were doing 8 live shows a week.

I can see why you didn’t really like it if you didn’t know the songs. There’s a reason why we all say to listen to the music ahead of time! It’s just too many words to pick up in the first listen. When we watched it last night, we put up subtitles. It was great and DD both caught words we had been singing wrong for years. We had a grand time singing along, though! This! I’ve listened to the soundtrack a few times and couldn’t follow the narrative very well. It all pretty much became clear when I watched it, but I would have missed half of the dialogue without subtitles. I might get to the point where I can watch it without, but it will be after a few times. The lyrics are so clever, being able to read them as well as listen to them definitely enhances the Hamilton experience.

I had not listened to the recording before watching this morning. I knew what I've read about it (and being a history major, knew that part of it), but hadn't seen any of it. It took a bit for me to get into it, and part of that is having to listen so intently to the words to understand all that is said (and there are a LOT of words!). But it really grew on me and I became much more invested in it. Some of the lyrics really hit hard and even though I'm not one to remember song lyrics, there are bits and pieces that will stick with me, especially if I watch/hear them again. The female stars were amazing, with gorgeous voices. I cannot fathom having the talent and genius it takes to create this whole work.

I think I’m more disappointed by folks saying they don’t like it because it is a “rap musical”. It is so much more than that 😢 I will listen to anything. But more people that you realize have a very limited appreciation for different musical genres. I don't fault someone for not liking something I like. Just so long as they don't expect me to only like what they like. It makes road trips with DH challenging. Sometimes I have to just put in my earbuds so I can listen to what I want. That’s me. I don’t like opera. No rap music, thanks. Not a fan of country either. I also have a short attention span and not a lot of patience. Books get 50 pages to interest me or I’m done. 🤷🏼♀️ But I am happy that so many people like it. Anything positive that makes people happy is a good thing, esp. now.

I think a one month subscription for $7 is about as much bringing it to the masses as you can While I agree that $7 a month is a bargain subscription price (and way cheaper than a single movie ticket), it's $7 a month only if you already have all of the equipment and good enough internet for streaming. For some families, the cost-- and in some places, accessibility-- of that infrastructure means it's still out of reach. As far as Hamilton itself-- we turned it off at intermission. (This is where people are going to tell me it picks up in the second half.) We didn't realize just how much of a biography it was. I mean, we knew it was based on a biography but we expected some semblance of a plot beyond the highlight reel of Hamilton's life. Of course, we have great respect for the work it takes to put something like this together. It takes mad skillz to sing, even more so to sing and move around and remember three hours of words AND choreography. And the technical planning behind choreography and a spinning stage and moving set pieces? Just mind blowing. But the actual musical itself? Glad we didn't pay hundreds of dollars for tickets.

I probably would have enjoyed it more if the main character wasn't such a douche. Love the music (REALLY looking forward to In the Heights!), love the costumes, love the choreography, can't get past the douchiness.

I tried to read the book but it is so dense and I got to page 80 (page 160 in a normal book) of 800+ before giving up... The musical has to be better than the book, right? Think of the production as the Cliff Notes version of the book.
