I probably would have enjoyed it more if the main character wasn't such a douche. Love the music (REALLY looking forward to In the Heights!), love the costumes, love the choreography, can't get past the douchiness. I hear you, but if you look at it as the story of Eliza, she's an amazing person. I said on the other thread, it’s like Hamilton is the backstory of Eliza. She went on to do amazing things.

I have zero issue with anyone not caring for any particular art form. I will only say that Hamilton is really, really unique. It was actually 2peas that introduced me to the concept before it was a phenomena when we were discussing something else - I want to say raisin in the sun with black and white casts? Anyway - someone mentioned Hamilton and the very idea of it was kind of bizarre to me - but I honestly think LMM is an absolute genius. Like seriously - this is so very interesting and groundbreaking on so many levels. It's not musical theater - it's not hip hop - it's not stodgy history. It's this collection of songs that bring to life a period of history in an utterly new way and then layering in the actors.... it's just fucking awesome. I cried when I saw it live. The part that for ME is so unique is the emotional connection. I honestly can't think of any Broadway show that I've seen that had the depth of emotion.

I am the first to say that rap and hip hop are definitely not musical genres I willingly listen to. However, I absolutely adore Hamilton! It is so smart and unique. I saw it in Chicago and Dallas and watched it today. Please give it a chance and if you do, watch with closed captions on. You will get so much more out of it. I think it is absolutely brilliant.

But I’m tired of people saying, “I don’t like rap therefore Hamilton is not for me”. Why does it bother you so that other people don't like Hamilton, and their reasons for that? We each get to decide what we do/don't like. I suspect there are things that you like that I don't care for. Besides, this thread was started on the basis of not caring for Hamilton...because of the rap music! If you are tired of some of us having that opinion, perhaps this isn't the thread for you.

No, not all the songs were rap. But enough of them were that I spent much of that time wondering what they were saying because I couldn't understand it.

Meh, my sister hates musicals but loves yoga. I’m the opposite. Everyone’s free to like what they like. Watch it, don’t watch it. Do what makes you happy.

We just finished watching it in Disney +. I loved it!! And, I was honestly expecting to not like it much. I had heard a few songs previously, and was “meh,” over it. We switched on subtitles very quickly. I can’t imagine watching the it without them. It moved so fast and there was so much information in the lyrics. I was expecting it to be full-on rap, but, it really wasn’t. There was tons of melodic and complex music. I am listening to the soundtrack right now. I am so glad I gave it a chance. I cried my eyes out! 😄❤️

This! I’ve listened to the soundtrack a few times and couldn’t follow the narrative very well. It all pretty much became clear when I watched it, but I would have missed half of the dialogue without subtitles. I might get to the point where I can watch it without, but it will be after a few times. The lyrics are so clever, being able to read them as well as listen to them definitely enhances the Hamilton experience. Just FYI, Hamilton doesn’t have a soundtrack. It has a cast recording. Still coming at us hard 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It’s so remarkably well done, from the choreography to the music to the subject matter. And, obviously it’s fine if someone doesn’t like Hamilton. We don’t all like the same things and that’s what makes this board interesting. I wasn’t going to chime in on this thread, but I couldn’t not comment on what Darcy wrote.

I thought FOR SURE my mother in law was going to hate it. We have season tickets to the Broadway touring theater and she pretty much hates them all. However she loved Hamilton. We watched it last night and I was shocked how much she liked it.

Add me to the bench of "don't really like rap & hip-hop, LOVE Hamilton!" I will say, though, that I didn't see it (touring production) until after having the lyrics memorized. I'd listened to it repeatedly on Amazon music (click the "lyrics" button to see the words) and had checked the Hamiltome (I think it's called Hamilton - an American Musical) out from the library that gives not only the lyrics, but also notes about them, who's singing them, etc. Genius.com also has the Hamilton song lyrics with some added commentary. I knew the words moved quickly from the first time I heard it and felt like I couldn't hear fast enough to understand them, so sort of studying up (and I say studying, but I love history & enjoyed it!) was essential to my enjoyment of the show. But even having seen it live, I noticed a lot of new things watching it on D+ last night. Obviously it's not the same on TV as in person, but I was nowhere near as close as some of those camera shots when I went!
FWIW, I think it's also pretty universally agreed that though Lin is an absolute genius in creating the musical, he's definitely the weakest member of the original main cast in terms of vocal ability and that sort of thing. I think even he has said something to that effect. Strangely I didn't like Burr on screen as much as I did in the recording. I would have put him on par with Angelica and Washington based just on the music, but in the recorded performance, Washington was a clear favorite for me. I had sort of a hard time accepting the Washington from the performance I saw in person because he was physically a smaller man than Hamilton and didn't project the gravitas I felt like he needed.

I love the soundtrack. Probably one of the best soundtracks of all soundtracks that have been made from Broadway. A lot of people don’t appreciate broadway soundtracks but I love a good soundtrack from Broadway.

Imagine Hamilton is parsnips. I tried parsnips a few times. I don't like them. It doesn't matter that lots of other people like them, or that they have health benefits or that I should support the parsnip farmers. I tried them, I don't like them. It's great that you like them. But you constantly telling me that I'm wrong to not like them isn't going to change my mind. You can have my share of the parsnips and I will have your share of the beets. But parsnips are the best vegetable ever <insert sarcasm> I don’t understand how invested people are in Hamilton and some feel the need to convince anyone that doesn’t care for it how great, amazing, brilliant, etc it is.

I didn’t get the impression she’s bothered that we may not like it, rather that she’s trying to correct misinformation about the content of the show so that we can base our decisions on accurate descriptions. That was the way it read to me and also the spirit in which I wrote my posts. I’ve talked with lots of people that ended up giving it a chance and loving it, after initially having had the wrong impression. My posts weren’t intended to sway people to the Dark Side, more tickets for me if they aren’t

I love Leslie Odom Jr on the cast recor—- sorry, soundtrack... but was underwhelmed by his performance in the movie. My son said the same thing. I was very surprised by it, to be honest.

See, now this sounds like if we just educated ourselves about parsnips then we would love them. I see it as if someone said, I hate parsnips because I don't like beef. And I once ate a carrots and I didn't like them, so I am not going to try parsnips. But like I said, I have tried parsnips. I have been exposed to parsnips on a number of occasions in a variety of preparations. Someone listed a couple reasons they didn't like parsnips. I could have listed off every single reason I also didn't like parsnips, but I didn't want it to come across as criticism of people who do like parsnips, or an anti parsnip rant on my part. So I agreed with the reasons they gave, because they are 2 of the reasons that are part of my list. How immersed in parsnips do I have to get before parsnip fans agree that I have made an educated decision about my feelings on parsnips? Do I have to spend hundreds of dollars on parsnips? Go to parsnip classes? Get parsnip tattoos? Name my first born child parsnip?
