I think the belief that Republicans are fiscally conservative needs to die a quick and permanent death. Every fucking time I hear "small goernment" or "fiscal conservatism" and Republican in the same sentence I get stabby. LOOK AT THE DATA!!! Same here. I never want to hear those words combined ever again because after the shitshow of the last four years especially it’s an absolute joke.

2020 wouldn’t have happened if you and others like you, and for full disclosure that includes my husband, didn’t vote for him in 2016. FWIW, who could have know it would turn out to be such a shit show? And please, with the "we told you!" No way you could have known either. You know, out of all the posts last night, this one continues to nag at and bother me. Over the past 4 years, there have been at least a hundred posts here complaining about Trump’s violent rhetoric on Twitter and in his speeches. And most of those posts were eventually met with dismissal by Trump apologists who said that we were over-reacting. That no one would take Trump’s words to heart. And yet we persisted and have said over and over again that eventual violence was going to be the result of Trump’s and his spawn’s and his minion’s talk that encourages violence. It started when, while campaigning in 2016, he encouraged the crowd to assault a heckler, promising that he’d pay their legal fees. We started warning about the impact those words would have. We knew that a shit show of monumental proportion was coming at the hands of Trump and his spawn. We talked about it here in innumerable posts over more than 4 years. If you didn’t listen to us, that is on you. But don’t come on here and tell us that no one knew that this was going to happen. Save that disbelief for the Trump supporters and apologists who harangued us for years as being “hysterical” and whining “snowflakes.”

I'm not here to be rude. Haven't read all the other replies. I don't know how you can think Trump stands for traditional values. Maybe you're just thinking of abortion? That's your opinion to have. But Trump's values revolve around Trump. I think the big problem here is people not being open and willing to change their minds. I agree. I think that many who say they are Republicans would actually resonate more with democratic values if they would allow themselves to look at how each side actually behaves and votes. I think unfortunately we've allowed the Republican to label liberals as socialists. I'm not sure Trump supporters even understand what socialism truly is, but the Republicans have successfully instilled fear.

One of my favorite ways to poke a Trumper is to ask them to define socialism and point out which specific Democratic Party policies align with it. They don’t understand. My husband who was a freaking history major and knows better thinks the Democrats are all socialists.

I avoided this thread today as I really can't fathom how any conservative can look at the events of yesterday with anything but horror. It is the antithesis of any resemblance of Conservatism. I am a registered independent, but as most know am much more fiscally conservative than most people on this board. I have no party and haven't for some time. I will say - those nifty graphs above totally negate the impact of Congress. By far the most fiscally conservative periods in our history is when a Democratic president has had to negotiate with a Republican Congress. But that's a debate for another day.
My conservative husband who just about choked on his vote for Biden (and I truly thought he was going to vote 3rd party up until the moment he filled in the bubble) has nothing but contempt for Trump and people who would violently enter our Capitol. Yesterday was a stain on our history of democracy and peaceful transfer of power. I seriously suggest some introspection on how you could possible try and defend your vote. This isn't about ANY issue - this isn't even about character - this is about defending our system of government.

And to add that those conservative/republican peas who were/are so fucking smug, sanctimonious and condescending towards other peas—getting their little cliquey jokes out, making fun of them when they were struggling to learn and make some sense out of things that they did not know, and ridiculing them when facts were posted that they didn’t like. We’ve been calling this out for 4 years. Then, for the last few months, exactly THIS (January 6, 2021) has been being planed out right in our faces on social media. EVERYONE KNEW.

I know most people here disagree with , or possibly/probably hate me. While that's not my wish, it is what it is . People ask why anyone voted for Trump and what they feel now. So here goes.
I'm a traditionalist. I'm a conservative. I don't hate foreigners and I don't want them deported. I want a faster, easier path for citizenship. Citizenship. If you want to work and live here legally, I'm all for reform and faster ways of making that happen if you're not a criminal.
I'm for helping the elderly , disabled, and those who've had hard times. I'm a child of divorce with a sick child. Obama care was a positive in that regard.
I'm also a Catholic and I have ideas some people think are stupid or may despise. That's your right and I can accept that.
Where those who wonder why I don't vote Democrat lose me is simple. I'm tired of hearing these things: I hope you die, you're shit head, You're a cunt, I want to throat punch you, you're a disgrace, you're a pile of shit.
Again, free speech and feel free to think that.
But I have to say that 1:2 Americans are not vile people. You don't know what strangers think and people who work in EMS, law enforcement, law, medicine, etc, are quite likely to lean right. No one corners the market on jobs, as much as you may think they do.
So if you are of the opinion that simply being a conservative makes someone as some like to say a "cunt", you will never change their mind.
Not a flame out . Not a whoas me. People have always had difference of opinion. Not every Republican backed Kennedy's assassination. Not every Democrat wanted Lincoln shot. The fact that people can now no longer consider that people's decisions are completely wrong or right is sad.
Many here say "they won't come back", "they won't stand up for themselves". You want dialogue? You want change? Maybe don't say you want every Trump voter dead or rotting in hell. Just a thought.
I haven’t read the thread, just your initial post. I want to say that I affirm and respect your views, and I admire you for sharing them. I wish more people like you would speak up, because I simply can’t believe that there aren’t more who feel the way you do. I’m not republican or democrat - I fall smack in the middle. I take people, and candidates, at face value. You’re welcome at my table any time.

I'm not sure Trump supporters even understand what socialism truly is, but the Republicans have successfully instilled fear. Completely agree. I posted on Facebook yesterday that I was looking forward to inauguration day, and this was part of the conversation that followed, (P is a well off, college educated, Catholic woman) My friend P, "So we can become a socialist country. Woo hoo. So much to be excited about. " ME, "P, there is nothing that leads me to believe this will happen. However, we are getting a real glimpse of fascism today. P, "Oh we'll be a socialist country. They're not even hiding the fact that that's what they want. They've screamed it loud and clear. " ME, "I guess we can revisit this in four years. But if our country isn't in tatters, I'll consider it a win. " P, "We wont be able to voice any opinions in 4 years. You'll see. This is a nightmare. Oh and today? Antifa. OH yeah. They don't really exist. Right. I'll remember that."

Why are they idolizing antifa members now? Or the Bozo in buffalo horns who has posted pictures of himself with Giuliani at a rally a while ago? Why was Rudy posing with antifa?

I have unfollowed most of my FB "friends" who are blatantly pro-Trump, but I have seen plenty of comments on friends posts today. I have seen a lot of justification and excuse making by those who are Trump supporters. Either it was justified "freedom of speech" or it wasn't actually Trump supporters that were storming the capital after all--it was the left, Antifa, etc. Still the same delusional bullshit day after day.

but the Republicans have successfully instilled fear. It's easy to engender fear where there is rampant ignorance. It's why ancient men sacrificed virgins to the volcano gods - FEAR & IGNORANCE. A lethal combination.

Oh we'll be a socialist country. They're not even hiding the fact that that's what they want. They've screamed it loud and clear. I met someone like this a few weeks ago, but when you try to pin them down - they have no responses. This was a man who was following the USA election (in Australia) and he started telling me how bad it was they stole the election and that Ultimately Trump would win, when I told him there is no way I believed that and that (at that point) his lawsuits were 39-1, he said "just you wait, they will come and take our houses and they will tell us where we have to work..." and I was like, "who? who is coming to take the house you own away from you in 2021 in Australia? tell me who will do that, and who will let them?" and of course there is no answer beyond the mysterious "they". It makes no sense, there's no logic to it, there's no precedent for them to believe nonsense like that - yet for some reason they still do.

Your friend clearly doesn't understand that having programs in place to benefit the under privileged is to help them better themselves so that they don't need those social programs. Kind of like how tax dollars are used to fix roads before they crumble. Helping those around you to have a better life should not be a negative.

No one wanted to listen to us because how he was going to benefit them was more important than the fact that he was going to hurt people who were not them. They wanted to hear that they made the right choice, so they turned to alternative news sources like OANN and Newsmax where they could hear that they were right. It's the same thing now when we say COVID is serious and stay home and wear a mask and get vaccinated. People still don't want to hear that, so they do what they want while the rest of us miss our families and hope no one we love dies because other people don't want to do what they are told. We live in a nation of narcissistic a-holes who don't think rules apply to them.
