My family and my ex-husband's family are in Terrebonne Parish. Everyone is staying and choosing to ride it out. My mom is 85 and lives alone. I am absolutely terrified for her. I barely slept last night. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this right now! I can’t imagine how worried I would be in that situation. I really hope they change their minds or are forced to evacuate. I can’t imagine an 85 year old lady going through this storm alone.

It was announced last night. They all know it and are choosing to stay anyway. I live 1500 miles away, so I can't do anything about it but worry unfortunately.

My late DH's family on his dad's side and my aunt's DH's family are both in the Gonzales/Prairieville area for the most part. I know my uncle's family is all staying put. Crazy swamp people!

DH and DS finally made it home. Took them about 8 hours or so (usually takes around six).
DH is exhausted, but I am so grateful that he went and got him, and DS is much less anxious than he was 24 hours ago.
Looks like I will be able to spoil my baby for several days, maybe a week.
Now I just have to worry about his friends that didn't evacuate this far north.

craftedbys What a relief. My d is in Portachoula just N of the Lake. I guess I am glad she is out of NOLA but the storm surge in the lake is expected to top the levees - UGH Tulana is moving students out of the dorms into the Commons. I am just freaking out.

scrappinghappy I hope your DD stays safe. Ida is coming too close to NOLA for comfort. DS' campus is on the south side of the lake, as in the lake is the northern edge of the campus. After having seen the bent trees and water lines two stories up on the outside of the buildings that show how deep the water got after Katrina I am very happy that DS decided he wanted to come all the way home instead of just going to his friend's house about an hour away.

My heart hurts, and hopes for the best possible outcomes. Hurricanes suck.

I'm sick with worry for everyone in harms way. I can't imagine having to stay at the hospital instead of being able to evacuate patients.

I’m currently sitting in the parking lot of my hubby’s employer, he got the call to go last night. His crew is loading up to head down right into the storm. 😭 I’m both scared and proud (that these guys gear up and head into storms to work/help) he just hit back from the East Coast storms.

I took a few photos of the crew standing in the morning light meeting to discuss game plan and gearing up. Seeing all of their vehicles lining up in a caravan to head down ❤️❤️❤️ They write their names/spouses phone numbers in permanent market on their arms. 😭😭😭 I just got home and now having a little selfish cry.

Just know, from someone who has been on the receiving end of those caravans coming in to help, that they are like superheroes descending in to save the day. The gratitude is enormous. I remember one time seeing a truck steps from North Carolina driving down my street and sitting down on porch steps crying in relief. Y’all, I am so worried. My boy is in Lafayette. He’s as prepared as can be (grew up in Florida) and is 25, but this storm scares me-a veteran of many nasty hurricanes.

I just heard that from my niece’s friend who is a meteorologist with the National Hurricane Center. She says it’s looking very bad.

[/quote] This one does look very very bad. I didn’t sleep well last night and we have prepared as much as possible. I have cooked meals for us to eat for a couple of days and caught water. But I’m still shell shocked from Laura last year that did so much damage on my home.

So grateful the government(s) learned from Katrina. Hoping that all that work and funding helps blunt the damage of Ida to the levees - that was Katrina's devastation - the storm itself and then the levees not holding. "WHAT’S CHANGED SINCE KATRINA? The federal government spent $14.5 billion on levees, pumps, seawalls, floodgates and drainage that provides enhanced protection from storm surge and flooding in New Orleans and surrounding suburbs south of Lake Pontchartrain. With the exception of three drainage projects, that work is complete. “The post-Katrina system is so different than what was in place before,” said U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesperson Matt Roe." apnews.com/ef633010bf2a081f9beeb8a425998710

My heart is aching this morning for everyone in Ida's path. Many of my high school classmates have posted on Facebook that they have evacuated to Florida, Texas, etc. But some have not. I fear for both of my former cities, NOLA and Baton Rouge.

Please don't feel selfish. You are worried and have every right to be. What your DH and the others in the crews are doing is very selfless, and so very much appreciated. Having been on the receiving end of the help of these crews after H. Ike (no power for 2 weeks), I can tell you firsthand just how thankful the residents in these areas are for their assistance. Will add your DH and all the crews coming to assist to my prayers, as well as the families of these crews who sit at home and wait for word. Hugs to you all.

Many hugs and prayers for you and your son. Lafayette has a special place in my heart as I have lived there three times over the years since childhood. It's where DH started his career and we have many friends there. My hope is that all come through this unharmed.
