Yep. I don't know many in BR any more, but several close family friends are in NOLA and only one of those families evacuated - even that one wasn't everyone since the husband is an emergency responder. Lake Charles is where I have more ties and friends, and I'm having a struggle with the fact that in spite of my fears for everyone where Ida is striking, I can't help but be relieved for LC. And yes, that makes me feel like a terrible person, but it's not that I wish this on ANYONE. But sure, global warming is just a hoax. I feel the same way about Lake Charles. I feel guilty about being glad they were spared. But as my brother said, it's still early in the hurricane season. LC can still get hit. *sigh* I think Lake Charles got more than enough last year.

I don't think it is bad to feel relieved when people you know and love are spared. You cam still be compassionate to those hit hard while being thankful others are okay. Definitely not bad. When this thing started forming and Houston was in the initial cone, we were all relieved to see it go elsewhere. Not that anyone here wishes harm on Louisiana. But Harvey is still pretty fresh in our minds here.

Heard from SIL. The VA hospital weathered this fine. She’s on duty for an indeterminate amount of time. All the roads are closed. Her house is good. No water inside although there’s damage outside.

I fear for both of my former cities, NOLA and Baton Rouge. But sure, global warming is just a hoax. a lot of my family have relocated from Nor Cal to Lake Charles. My cousin married a gal who is from there (he's Pastor now of her dad's church). My aunts and uncles have all slowly drifted off there to retire, sold their homes here for lots of money. It seemed like a good idea financially but now I know some have really regretted it because since then it's been hurricane after hurricane. One cousin's young son and his wife and baby lost their home to flooding not even a year ago. So we've been watching the news with bated breath. Like you, I'm so relieved, but I'm sure they are impacted.

Thank you all for understanding me! So far it doesn't sound like too many deaths, at least. This thing ramped up so quickly that a lot of people who might ordinarily have evacuated didn't really have time to do it, and that's worried me. And that the hospitals couldn't evacauate - I was thinking about the one in Thibodoux that even lost some of their generator power and had to manually bag ICU patients while trying to move them via effing stairwell to another floor. Talk about deserved medals! Hoping and praying for flooding to subside quickly and power restored as soon as it can be (thanks, papercrafteradvocate 's husband!) though that sounds like an extra daunting task this time around. But places like Port Fouchon just break my heart, and it's not like most people in areas like that have a ton of extra money sitting around or even good insurance. I don't know how you start over from this.

Like you, I'm so relieved, but I'm sure they are impacted. It looks like this time, they just got a bit of rain and that was it. I'm thankful for that, and hope all your family is well.

I haven't been able to talk to my mom yet, but from what it sounds like she may possibly have quite a bit of roof damage. There is a hole in the roof over her family room. My sister was hoping to get over there today to assess the situation but Terrebonne Parish is under curfew, so I don't know when that will happen. My brothers will drive down from Arkansas as soon as they are allowed to. My niece has leaks throughout her house and will need a new roof. It sounds like my sister's situation is much the same. Obviously there's no electricity. I read online on HoumaToday.com that the water utilities are not functioning. My mom has her cell phone turned off to try to conserve the battery. I texted my sister this morning but I haven't gotten a response. My sister and niece both said that yesterday was horrible. The wind and rain were relentless. My sister and I kept in touch a lot last night with me checking the radar and trying to let her know where the eye was and how slowly the storm was moving. I stood in my kitchen this morning watching videos of the destruction and just cried. I haven't seen my family since Christmas of 2019 because of Covid. I just want to hug my mom.

I was asking a friend about his family/friends who all live down there.. he's like 'there was a hurricane?" (that said, he is not close to his family/friends and moved away) So he is going to check on them after work.. I asked him that I bet he didn't miss those storms and his reply was:
"I do. Everything closes and you get to enjoy the sublime awe of wind and sheets of rain for hours and hours. Losing power for several days sucks, what with the subsequent heat and humidity."
He has a very dry sense of humor.

Huge hugs to you SnoopyFan! I haven't seen my mum is just as long for the same reason and imagining the storm aftermath on top of that.... i hope you'll be able to see your loved ones soon, and I'm sorry they're dealing with some destruction. It's all so disrupting to life.

The problem with a hole in the roof and water will also be how long the power is out. Without AC the mold gets out of control in the house fast. It took my next door neighbors two years to move back into their house after Florence, and it only looked like minimal damage initially.

My oldest brother has been telling her for years that she should move to Arkansas. He would be happy to sell his house and find something that works well for the two of them. He's been telling her that since my dad passed away. Maybe this will help her to make that decision. She's 85 and doing okish on her own, but it may be time for her to not live alone anymore. We'll see...

I just read from a post that many roads are closed creating unsafe travel…… Re-entry will be a coordinated plan manned by law enforcement and the National Guard.

All the people I know in NOLA are fine. One family's house sounds like it is in bad shape, but the people are all OK. And there are a couple of homes that can't be gotten to yet, so we don't know how they are, but again, it's the homes and at least not the people.

My niece and her husband and kids along with my sister are at my mom's house.
While my niece's husband and the older boys patch the holes in the roof, my sister and niece are helping my mom clean up a bit.
My niece took a bunch of pictures to send to my brothers so they know what repairs are going to need to be done once they can get down to Houma. It's bad, but as my brother told me it's better than our imaginations running amuck.
My niece says that Mom seems sad and overwhelmed. The storage shed in the backyard is destroyed. I doubt anything is salvageable. I know it's only stuff, but still...
The fact that they have no electricity and no water just makes it all worse.

My heart goes out to everyone around the gulf coast or has family around there. Prayers of thanksgiving that people are physically OK and hopefully the destruction is minimal.
I know the government is doing its best to help those impacted by the storm, but mad props and much praise to those civilians, like the Cajun Navy or Operation BBQ or PCA's DH who have left their own homes and families and are going out an helping with rescue, feeding people and trying to get power restored.
These people will be working round the clock in the heat, humidity, bugs and water to help others in need, without concern for race, religion, nationality, political leanings, or if they like pineapple on their pizza. They are helping their fellow man.
People helping other people. Restores you faith in humanity.

Thanks for asking. My d is in Ponchatoula. They had some damage to the roof, some trees came down and the power is still out but they have a full house generator and are doing ok. Cant leave till the roads are cleared. Right now they are riding horses out to help the neighbors whose roofs were blown off. Tulane is evacuating any students who stayed, to Houston, and the campus will be closed till mid October She can’t even get back to get out. Current plan is to stay where she is till NOLA gets power back and then we will re-access .My heart is hurting for everyone who suffered during this storm.

Just heard about a friend in Baton Rouge. She and family are safe, no power. They have a gas stove so cooking by flashlight.
Sixteen years ago she was running supplies to shelters around NOLA. That was pre-DH and pre-kids.

CNN They were just talking about the possibility of connecting some good power line in NOLA to create their own power grid to provide some electric to part of the city! Some others places are looking at a month or more.
Earlier some had shown the way big tall transformer towers laying on the ground. Those have to be rebuilt to connect to power coming from elsewhere. It is not just about fixing down lines on streets. It is the source that needs repairs. Simple discretion but I think it's right ?
