My college freshman is having a bummer of a winter break - so far her boyfriend and her closest high school friend both came home from school with Covid and she hasn’t seen them yet. Seems like the common denominator is that both were waiting to get boosted when they got home instead of getting boosted at school when first available. But who knows. She’s moping around here is all I know. I feel you - my DD has skipped things with friends due to her brother's positive test, plus not getting her tests back in time. Shes got plans with them for NYE and part of me wants her to skip that...

Thank you! I'm scheduled for a PCR test this morning, but I won't get the results until tomorrow. My mom's doctor has arranged for her to get a PCR test this afternoon, as they are more sensitive than the at home tests. She should also get the results tomorrow. So far, it appears to be mild, I'm just super tired. I do have some post nasal drip that I need to keep an eye on because I have a tendency to get bronchitis really easily. False positives on the rapid test are very rare - so I would be surprised if your PCR test came back anything other than positive. Hopefully, your mother will remain healthy and COVID-free. Sending best wishes that it doesn’t develop into bronchitis for you. Not disputing the bolded--just passing along anecdotal stories. We have now had 2 false positives with the BinaxNOW home tests. Different lots and different boxes. First one was taken with a test that flew in checked baggage with me to Africa and back, so I thought it might be temperature compromised. DS tested positive with it, went to a lab and got a 2nd test that was neg, and we retested with another home test, also negative. DS had a bad cold. Second one was my sister-in-law. Rough cold symptoms, tested positive with home test, called doctor, went in and tested the same day. Results have come back as negative. I say all that not to knock the home tests, but IF YOU GET A POSITIVE with a rapid home test and have symptoms, go get a PCR test to confirm results. Quarantine until you get the second set of results of course. There is a small chance of a false positive, at least on the BinaxNow. It would suck to quarantine, notify others of exposure, and shut down your life for several days based on a false positive.

Here the PCR tests are taking 48-72+ hours so you would shut down and lose several days if you tested positive at home while waiting for the results of the PCR.

no...? ? ?
or maybe not?? I don't know. My DH had COVID (VERY mild, knock on wood) in December 2020, and I didn't get it then. So hopefully not?? Since then I've been double-vaxxed (need to get a booster, though). But the way it's mutating, I probably will at some point. I just hope not, and if I do, I hope it's a mild case. My sister and her husband both are anti-vaxx and COVID conspiracy nuts, and my fear is more that one of them gets it and gives it to my mom (82 years old and medically fragile).
