I might do a summery WITL in early July. I have half the week off for a short staycation and a few things planned that I'd love to document more in-depth. But if so, I will likely be going digital. joblackford You in for a photobook WITL this year? Maybe a Blurb trade book? I considered it for a moment when I saw this thread, but I feel like my Day One journaling is detailed enough every day that I don't really have much motivation for a specific WITL project. And I'm not feeling very inspired by photography lately, between life being rather dull, always at home, and Instagram no longer being my happy place. I know, I know, I would tell anyone else that life is beautiful and worth documenting, even if it feels mundane and dull! In fact, I recently got a 2015 book printed with Story layouts, PL pages, a couple of DITL and a detailed dSLR WITL project and it was very interesting to see the differences. Different furniture layout, clothing, we still had a dog, etc etc. So... maybe I'll convince myself to do it again sometime. Or maybe I'll do it in Day One.

Everyday poetry, dah'ling, everyday poetry! The nice thing about WITL in the life is that it's a slice of a season in your life and in the year right there in your hands. It's not a chapter of a bigger project. Everything just focuses in a little extra on the stuff of "dull" daily routines and habits right now. (That's just me rambling to try and lure you over.)

Maybe we need a thread to discuss day one further because I think others use is also- I am always interested in the ways people are using it.

It's a fun way to capture journaling to use in other projects and I believe you can create books from your entries although I have never tried that. I mostly use it as a place to contain all the daily details and I pay for the full version so I can keep a journal for Journal Your Christmas and another less-used one for OLW type entries, plus I've copy-pasted a bunch of old letters, journals and blog writings in there and even dictated some old writings I wanted to keep and search. I believe sleepingbooty was the one who originally told me about it. I love being able to search it for mentions of specific things.

Here's my tips that I've used for the 4-5 albums I have:
--I set a timer on my phone for morning, noon, afternoon and night time to remind me to take a photo of whatever I am doing. I will vary the time from day to day to get different times throughout the week. --If I take a horizontal photo, I automatically take a vertical photo so I have photo options at the end of the week. --I set up my iPhone to have a specific folder to store all my photos in called WITL and then I add a sub folder for each day. At the end of the day. I edit the photos and 'star' each photo I am for sure going to use. That way I know exactly what I have and might have missed. --When it comes time to do my album, I only use whatever products I have in my kit. I create way more with less product. --I set up my album, somewhat, ahead of time. IO get my page protectors in the order I want them, insert whatever 'day' cards I want to use. I also make my title page ahead of time. For me, if I commit and make the title page then that means I am committed to finishing my album.

I need a timer to take the bag out of my tea I am so forgetful these days.

I listened back to the podcast I mentioned earlier in the thread and here were some ideas
In your purse…on your nightstand…in your fridge… that type of thing
Your online life
Weather
And a great suggestion was not to try to capture everything each day but over the course of the week instead..so for example in the morning you use certain products, take meds, make coffee pack lunch etc- rather than trying to capture it all everyday…just one photo w/ part of it for each day-if that makes sense.

They were like, are you really going to remember next year that you took that photo on Weds. instead of Thursday? No. And it doesn't matter. It's about YOUR week, you. It's not about documenting a crime scene for evidence (maybe I made that last part up but it's true). You really don't need to focus on accuracy as long as you're telling your story. I added those as well.

Yes! Taking too many versions of the same thing can leave you bogged down and paralyzed by too many decisions when it comes to putting the project together. I think snapping your morning routine one day, evening routine another day, etc etc works quite well. I definitely don't need to see what making dinner looks like every night but catching one good shot of me in pjs with the dog "helping" was a nice little memory to look back on 7 years later. Including a shot of however you get your news can be fun (newspaper, online, TV, Instagram) and it's always a bit of a surprise looking back and seeing what was news that day/week (local or bigger). I hadn't forgotten about the big explosion that was front page local news in WITL 2015 but I was surprised that it was then specifically. I also took a photo of our basement because we were storing things down there for a new business, 2 or 3 businesses ago, and our basement storage looks totally different now, especially since I started storing food down there in 2020. It's not a place I spend much time and its very un-photogenic but it's interesting to see. I did the fridge at the beginning of the week and another shot at the end of the week. Taking photos of your groceries before you put them away can be really interesting too. I have read some books by Peter Menzel that encouraged me to take photos now and then of what we bring home from the store: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gallery/2013/may/06/hungry-planet-what-world-eats

I'm loving this: "Moments of joy. Moments of sadness. Moments of boredom. Moments of chaos. Moments of quiet. Moments where I had to go in my room + close the door because it was so darn loud. Moments that repeat. Moments that take my breath away. Moments that seemed annoying at the time. Moments of laughter. Moments of learning. Moments that will simply never exist again. ... I write about the basic stuff. I take photos of the basic stuff. It's what our lives are made of day to day to day. Worth the work of documenting? 100%. As you begin the process of capturing what's real in your life right now I want you to remember that there are no perfect photos, no perfect words, no perfect way to approach this project, and no perfect way to finish it. You can do this and it can be a really fun + enjoyable way to take a closer look at your life right now. " From this post: aliedwards.com/2021/05/week-in-the-life-2021-bring-on-the-stories

I was planning on doing it this month but I broke my ankle & foot last week so I'll be postponing until I'm (hopefully) healed in mid-July.
I don't usually make a separate WITL album but I do enjoy choosing a "normal" week and focusing extra-hard on noticing what's happening in our life. I avoid posed/portrait shots of everyone else (since I do that all the time) unless it's something specifically happening that I would scrap, anyways. I try to take at least one selfie per day + one timer shot per day of me doing something. I love capturing our routines like going to school, starting the work day, dinner, etc. and our relationships with each other. This is the one time of the year where I do "weird" stuff in public like taking photos of myself shopping. I love taking photos of things like the refrigerator after a grocery run or the clothes folded next to the dryer to really capture who we are without taking photos of our actual selves.
I work the stories I capture into future layouts as story/personality pages are my preference over event pages.

If I take a horizontal photo, I automatically take a vertical photo so I have photo options at the end of the week. This is such a simple tip, but it's something I never considered that will be a game changer in fill my pocket pages. Thanks!

I can’t remember who but I saw someone on IG that took a rigid piece of styrafoam packaging and carved out a slit to hold her phone. It made for a small and portable phone stand she used for projects like this.
I have a small tripod and remote that I’ve used in the past for group or posed shots. The remote is very handy compared to the timer and you can take multiple shots. I’ve also used rocks or whatever is around. I want to get a lens attachment for my phone to experiment.

blemon did you take the 2020 & 2021 WiTL prep party classes? If not I highly recommend. Lots of great ideas and digitals. Worth the $5. I want to do the TN insert from the 2020 class again. That was one of my favorite things from that year. I found a lot of great inspiration for title pages on IG last year. Check out some witl hashtags.

This thread has so many good ideas. I was leaning towards skipping WITL this year. Now after reading everything, I think I will document it, take the notes, then decide if it turns into a mini album or pages later. I've been doing the Heidi Swapp "stop the blur" weekly documenting since 2020, and even tho I'm not doing every week right now, I am in the habit of documenting that way. I think for WITL it tends to be a bit more staged/curated for me in the sense that I make it a point to add in things about life now, from an overall snapshot point, versus just recording what happened.
As far as the selfie/timer thing, I like to look for creative ways to snap a photo of reflection, so mirrors, windows, shiny stainless steel, puddles, rearview mirror, side mirrors, etc. One of my fav photos is shopping in a store like Home Goods and taking a photo of reflection in the section with the big standing mirrors.
As far as what I've done for WITL in the past, I usually print the daily sheets that Ali E provided, but put 2 on a page so I can fold a piece of paper horizontally, and it fits nicely in my planner to take notes. But I mostly rely on Day One journal app for recording, and also take photos of things that I want to remember. Lots of screenshots of things I've looked at: text conversations, social media posts, articles read, audio books listening to, podcasts, tv show/movie posters, grocery lists, etc.
I've done WITL...I guess a bit more than a handful of times?
2014 - 8.5x11 digital layouts printed 2015 - hybrid 12x12 layouts chronologically within regular album 2016 - separate 6x8 album 2017 - hybrid 12x12 layouts chronologically within regular album 2018 - intended to do digital 3x8 album, but never finished 2019 - can't remember - think I skipped it 2020 - hybrid 8.5x11 layouts 2021 - 6x8 snap book
I'm missing one because I know I did a summer week once, maybe that was in 2013? Not sure how long it's been going on. Even the year I didn't finish what I intended, I think 2018, I stuck the daily pages in the back of my regular album that year, so at least I have that documenting somewhere.
One of my fav things I always do is sort of like catch-all page for any little stuff that doesn't make it into the regular daily recording, so it's generally been a "around here" sort of thing with thumbnail snapshots of stuff I want to include. One year I used the divided 6x8 pp with the small 2x2s to stick bits of ephemera and another time I just printed a contact sheet of photos to insert into album and added some embellishment to it.
The past 2 years I really thought about the format and that seems to help me complete it. I really loved the way my 2020 came out with my hybrid 8.5x11 pages. I like to sketch it all out, then when I'm putting it together I don't forget anything.
Writing this up kinda got me excited for it! I think I want to include the 18th weekend, so may include both weekends.

Why do I never think of these simple things. That's a great idea and I will do it now. Writing this up kinda got me excited for it! I'm excited for you! Just wanted to share this video in which a photographer discusses staying present while taking everyday photography (and showing some lovely shots of his own family life in the process):
ETA: There's a gorgeous shot where he photographs the back of his kid by the bathroom sink while having his own reflection showing in the bathroom mirror. Such a great shot idea for WITL/DITL.

Yay, favorite project of the year!! I’m So out of the loop, haven’t been to these forums in about 2 months. Life has been a whirlwind, sports, dance, end of year school madness, prom, graduating senior, parties, LOTS of tears (mine). I really need this project to refocus and center myself.
6x8 album using Ali’s kits. Doing it the week of the 20th. I’ve never done a summer week, always the May one. It will be interesting to see how different it is. School is always the focal point of past albums but kids are done for the summer. LOTS of stuff to document …graduated senior, son has a girlfriend, my daughter has her first ever boyfriend, new jobs for several of us.
Is there going yo be a prep party?

Don't mind me jumping back in here with another video. I just keep thinking of what I have saved in my Evernote.
This video is by a professional photographer taking you through one of his commissioned DITL projects. It's different from what we do as he comes in as an exterior eye to capture the clients' family life but the shots are beautiful, the play with light top notch, the advice good. Pure inspiration.

Crafty Ass Female Podcast has a great podcast that released today about WITL - capture techniques - photos and words. I listened to it this morning while I walked my dog and found several tips that I can use next week. I plan on going back and re-listening when I can write things down so I can remember them!

As we're a week out.. don't forget to stock up on things! adhesives/paper/ink/etc
I still need to grab some instax paper to push me into using my little camera at least a few times a day.
