But I wanted to put out there that nobody stepped up to help me. I'm documenting my own work to cover my own ass. I've been reading along on this thread but had not waded in as you were getting great reflection and advice. But this last post jumped out to me as you opening your own eyes to two realities. Your higher-ups aren't managing well. And you need to protect yourself as this all plays out. (I liked the advice to 'stay in your lane' and do your own work well but don't CYA for her - that just delays getting any resolution to happen.) Anyhow, I just wanted to point out that your thread served just like talking over a problem out loud. We often get to our own right advice and conclusion in the process of going over it with someone else. So, yay! Go on your camping trip and have a ball! When you get back, work will still be there, and you'll have much greater clarity of how to manage it going forward. This is exactly why I post here most of the time. Usually my OPs are very open ended and I'm looking for the dialogue so I can consider something from all angles and hopefully make the best choice. Especially when I'm frustrated I have a tendency to react before thinking things all the way through.

I received some information that is both frightening and promising. The powers that be are noticing some of the things going on in my office. I can't share more right now.
I'm keeping my head down and my mouth shut and we will see how things play out.
For now, I'm getting ready to leave on my camping trip. We will see next Monday how things play out.

I’m sorry you came back to a disaster at work but I think it’s important that your boss sees that no work is done by your coworker when you are out and that you are the only one in the department who does any work.

I'm so sorry, Becky, though you're probably not surprised. I agree with PPs who urge you to stick to your job and your job only. OR they can bloody well pay you double if you're going to do two jobs! ((( hugs )))

If it's at all possible - do the work you're responsible for and then let the rest work itself out, or not. Remember, you are only earning one paycheck.

I’m disappointed for you. Management at your company isn’t doing the job they should be doing in monitoring progress in departments, to a reasonable degree, especially when they have been notified by you of a potential problem. I’m all for letting employees do their jobs without being micromanaged, but your situation is uncovering an extreme lack of ability on the part of several employees, from your coworker to your managers. I sincerely hope something changes for the better soon. I fear that things are going to get worse before they get better though.
When I was working, I always kept something my father had told me at the forefront of my mind. He said when you go to work, regardless of the job you are doing, give them 110%. The 100% is because that is what you are being paid for and the 10% is your insurance. We hold insurance on our homes, our cars, our health, and our lives. Consider that 10% extra effort to be insurance on your employment. If you are giving an extra 10%, your name will not be the first on anyone’s mind when layoffs are imminent. It certainly worked out for me over the years. Too bad your coworker isn’t of the same mindset. Heck, she isn’t even giving the 100% let alone an extra 10%. Just don’t wear yourself ragged trying to catch up on what they neglected.
