I think the two teams that have been eliminated so far were actually the weakest teams. Nice people, but not the stamina or skills required.
I don't know every team by name yet, but most seem to be willing to work for their place in the race. I loved that the son painted his mom's face while she was lying down taking a rest from the heat and exertion. No one has been getting on my nerves yet. I giggled when I heard the surfer dudes saying how they had no idea who Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were. Time marches on...

quiltz just so I don't mess up, what is considered a spoiler? Anything that hasn't been televised? A certain amount of time after the show is televised to allow for different time zones? Thanks! I will ask cadoodlebug Joy, could you please answer this question about what is a spoiler since you are on the West Coast. Thanks. Once an episode has aired in the US, it's fair game for spoilers. I never read the thread until DH and I have watched the episode. Same with Survivor.

But, it makes me crazy how some teams just wander around willy nilly. I would be stopping every few minutes to ask people for directions!!! We like all the teams so far.

Right after it's been broadcast in the first USA time zone we can write anything about the episode...none of it is considered to be spoilers. Personally I never watch it right away on Wednesday night on TV because I can't stand the commercials. So I wait until the next day or two. So it's on me either to open this thread before I watch, or not to open this thread before I watch. Just because I choose to watch later doesn't mean that everyone else needs to accommodate me. lol.

I was thinking the same thing. It's one thing if a team is driving and gets lost, especially in a less populated area. You can't always stop immediately when you're driving, to ask for directions. But these teams were in what was obviously a busy area, and they were running by SO many people who they could have asked. They don't even have to speak Spanish to just say the name of where they wanted to go.

I've noticed as I've gotten older that TAR stresses me out! I get very anxious for the teams and really get overinvested.
Funny thing, exH and I applied to be on the show a million years ago when I was in my 30s. Now in my 50s, there's just no way in hell!

I really thought the dad and dad were so sweet, esp her! I was pretty sure they wouldn’t make it far. Seemed like a hot day for everyone!
The mom and son were also sweet! He’s a huge super fan which is cool to see.
I do think the gay couple could’ve helped the other since it was so early in the game. I’m glad they realized you don’t have to come first every time.
The grandparents are funny and I’m rooting for them too! Also, the military guys in butterfly wings was funny!
So far, I don’t have any favorites but seem like this bunch is a good group of people.

The pink team (cousins I think) are kind of a mess. They seem very different from each other but maybe that will work well for them.
The mother and son seemed to work well together. It was funny how he kept working on her makeup even as she laid down on the ground!!

Why was the girl on the pink team not carrying a backpack the entire show? I paused the show thinking her partner was carrying it but he was not he had just one on his back. I thought all of them had to carry one.

I loved that they all had to wear the wings, so funny to see them running to the mat that way. That make up challenge looked horrifying with all the sweat melting the makeup.

I thought all of them had to carry one. Some teams just carry one pack between the two - I think the married Asian couple from last season also only had one pack. It definitely cuts down on the items you can bring, but it makes it easier to swap carrying the pack between partners. That way, if one person is tired from a roadblock, the other person only has to carry one bag instead of both bags.

I was a little relieved that the father/daughter team was out, as I was worried about his health if he stayed in the race for a long time. They seemed really nice though. I love how the pilots told the cousins about the detour they missed and where to find the iguana bridge and how the mother/son team helped that other team. So much better than the boyfriends who acted like they couldn't hear the orange team. It's far too early in the race to be so cutthroat.

Our thought was that it might be better to carry two smaller packs than to try to get both people's items into one larger pack. I mean, if you think you can get by with one pack for the two of you, then you could downsize to a much smaller one and have one for each person. Then even if one person ended up carry both for awhile it still wouldn't be as much weight as two larger ones.

I'm liking this group of racers more than the usual cast of characters. We'll see if it lasts! I teared up a little when the dad/daughter team was eliminated. They have a sweet bond and both seemed to be thankful for the experience.

DH & I are enjoying the longer episodes. They don't even feel longer to me, really. Although watching it without ads may help with that. I was also a bit relieved to see the father & daughter go home, simply because I was a bit concerned about him. I realize they started on a very hard note, between the extra long leg and the extra hot weather, but still, I worried about him and about the mom from the mother/son team. The only team that has annoyed me a bit so far is the pink cousins team. The failure to read the clue thing annoyed me last week and just a few minor moments bugged me a bit this week. I was surprised that more than one team made the same mistake of thinking the bridge near the face-painting was the iguana bridge. Once there were 2 teams there doing things in the incorrect order, I was really interested to see how it would play out when they both reached the mat and had to go back, but then they lucked out and got that somewhat accidental heads up about it. Now, for the sake of everyone racing, I hope they get to go to a cooler climate next.

Now, for the sake of everyone racing, I hope they get to go to a cooler climate next. I have a question about that. No way could they carry enough stuff in that one little backpack to dress for both Mexico and Iceland (or some other cooler climate). Or the extra shoes when they get one pair wet in a challenge. Do they have extra luggage that is carted from place to place? Does TAR issue them winter gear on location?

But I feel like I remember a season where they went to Alaska and it was really winter and all the contestants had on the same winter parka.

And I do think that some teams manage to pack what seem like impossibly small bags. Kim Holderness did a YouTube video showing what she packed when she was on the show. www.youtube.com/watch?v=luH2aVUo3OoBut like monklady123 said, I think when they need especially warm protective clothing for a task, the items are provided, just like they provide wetsuits when they have certain water tasks. But if they are someplace cold and they're just out getting from one place to another then they will wear their own clothing in most cases. I do seem to recall one year when someone had to spend money on some sort of clothing or shoes while they were on a leg. I have also seen them ditch clothing at different points along the race.

And just the other day I was remembering the beginning of TAR and how the money for each leg was such a huge deal. And how people would run out and how some would even beg strangers for money in the streets. I am so glad they did away with that. I always imagined someone from any other country--say Sweden, is on holiday in say Japan, and then they go home and they're telling friends what they did and what they saw while in Japan, and then they say "Oh, and we saw Americans begging for money on the street." And then they'd try to explain that American tourists were playing a game, and were begging strangers to give them money so they could continue playing this game. The whole things seemed so cringe-worthy to me.

So far this season, it seems to have started off with very difficult physical challenges. Climbing all those stairs at that big rock mountain had to be so hard, and that was just to get the clue, then they had to go back down and actually do the roadblocks & detours! Whew ! I was worn out just watching them. I feel for the guy terrified of heights, I can relate, but of course that is one reason that I would never be on Amazing Race.

I haven't watched this week's episode so I'm not reading posts here yet....But I just wanted to say that this past week it rained one entire day, so I went back to old seasons of Amazing Race. I just randomly scrolled down the seasons list and chose season 12 (I have no idea which season was which, who was on the, etc.) This was the season when they went to Burkina Faso, which was where I was in the Peace Corps. One task they had was to learn 10 Mooré words and hearing that made me sad for what's happened in the country. No one could travel there now, Peace Corps is gone, etc. All because of terrorism. Anyway, that was the season with the pink Goths, Kynt and Vixen (spelling?) -- I really like them, and they were always nice to each other. And this was the season with Nate and Jennifer, the couple who fought ALL THE TIME and said hateful things to each other. wow.

After watching that video where Kim Holderness talked about what she brought on the race, I noticed several teams where people had a watch with a compass on them.
I think the mother/son team ditched one of their backpacks.
I noticed the pink team is fighting in the preview for next week - has a team ever broken up while on the race? I know in the season that was paused by covid (the Holderness season), a team broke up during the break and didn't rejoin the race, but I wasn't sure about an actively racing team.

I traveled to new zealand in winter and carried everything in one carryon. I could pack for a range of weather in a backpack, except for extreme cold. you just wear the same thing over and over and wear synthetic clothes that pack small and wash well. If you backpack, you figure out from 100 degrees F to 30 degrees F in one small pack.

When I saw that staircase, I almost passed out for them! DH reminded me that I climbed Mount Vesuvius but those were switchbacks. In the previews it looked like they were hang-gliding. I hope the guy who is afraid of heights doesn't have to do it. I can't imagine even going on the race if you're afraid of heights. Remember seasons ago when that girl wouldn't go down the high water slide and they were eliminated because of it.
