As soon as Biden started talking it was clear it was going to be a rough night. His voice reminded me of how I talked for about a week after I had Covid - just a weak voice and I didn’t feel well. That is not how you want to look on tv if you are trying to persuade people that your age isn’t holding you back. Trump just rambles on, talks about how great things were, and makes things up. My main thing is that I want a Democrat to be my president. I am going to vote for Joe, but I really wish he was ten years younger. I like President Biden. I believe he is an honorable man. Honestly, he just isn’t capable to lead. I hope the powers that be are able to find a solution. I can’t in good conscience vote for him just because I want to see a Democrat in the office. I’m thinking I’ll just not vote. That is NOT what you should do. I'm sorry, but this is what is wrong with our country. Voting for Biden is more than voting for an old man, it is voting to keep Trump and his sycophants out of office. Please don't forget that Trump wants to ruin this country. Not voting for Biden is voting for Trump. Do I need to remind you about what happened in 2016? People didn't vote because they thought Hillary was a sure thing.

Biden isn’t capable to lead? Are you fucking kidding me? He’s been leading since 2021. He’s got a very capable team around him. If you don’t vote, you’re voting for trump. Republicans already came for abortion. They’re working on birth control. If trump gets in again, we’re in danger of an abortion ban becoming federal, birth control being banned, and I wouldn’t put it past those motherfuckers to make marital rape legal again. Do you not have any women or girls in your life? trump will let Putin do whatever he wants. The ME will get even worse. He’ll try to pull us out of NATO. The economy will go right into the toilet. Do you not remember 2017-2021? Why would you not do what’s in your power to make sure it doesn’t happen again? FOR FUCK’S SAKE! I just absolutely don’t get this attitude. I think you have rose colored glasses on. These past 4 years have been horrible. I don't like Trump, however he will get America back to where we need to be. The other part of the debate story is that Trump lied throughout the entire thing. Read up on Project 2025. That is not where this country needs to be. Republicans should be demanding that they have a different candidate, but they’re totally fine with with their lying criminal candidate.

I think you have rose colored glasses on. These past 4 years have been horrible. I don't like Trump, however he will get America back to where we need to be. You're probably right. Some of us have rose colored glasses on when it comes to Biden, because some of us would like to think things can get better. Trump has, literally, stated he will continue to remove rights from us - especially women. It's not enough that over 60,000 rape victims had to carry their rapists babies since they overturned Roe. It's not enough women's maternal death rates and infant mortality have increased in states that flat out banned abortion. Just some lives, right? How about when they remove the right for IVF? How about when they remove the right for birth control? You think it will stop there? They want cis, white, "Christian" men in charge of everything and the people who disagree can be dealt with. That's not even touching on the LGBTQIA+ community, public education, or climate change disasters that will occur. Go read Project 2025 and tell me that THAT is a sane option for the United fucking States of America. "We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately." I can’t in good conscience vote for him just because I want to see a Democrat in the office. I’m thinking I’ll just not vote. I am voting for Kamala Harris, honestly. Biden won't make it through a second term and I am fine with Harris finishing it out. And befire anyone says "What has she done as VP?", she has done exactly what every other VP in history has- stay out of the spotlight and do the traditional things assigned to a VP. Dont hold her to a different standard because of her gender or race. I cannot love this more! You're exactly right. I'm hoping President Biden bounces back. They have another debate schedule September 10th. But if he has to step down, his VP is more than capable of continuing on with his legacy.

Same. Back in 2000, I voted for Mel Carnahan for Missouri US Senator over John Ashcroft after Carnahan died in a plane crash. Missouri chose someone who died over the republican because of his policies. I wonder where those folks who had common sense went because my home state has completely went to the dark side.

I heard that Biden was sick. I do not believe that last night is typical Biden. If it is, he shouldn't be President. I think he was sick.
Whoever on his staff put him on the stage last night should be fired. It would have been better to release a doctor's report and say he is sick and put up with that blowback then this morning's nightmare.
If he can't get out there today and look strong, his campaign is likely over. He should step aside. I'd rather lose with someone other than Biden then lose with someone else. And I bet a younger dem could beat that POS

Education funding is way down. We have a bullet train to nowhere. So many homeless people. SF has people literally pooping on the street. Homes are ridiculously overpriced. Our local DMV’s are going to 2 days a week in person, the other 3 are “virtual”. Property taxes are super high. Gas prices are among the highest in the country. PG&E is allowed to continually screw people over for their own mistakes/fires. Really most people I know are staying for the awesome weather we have most of the year. Newsom was one of the reasons we left CA. The list of poor decisions is so long. Please don't let him out of CA - he has done enough damage there.

If Biden steps aside, it will leave the Democratic Party in chaos and we will never defeat Trump. I wish the media would stop talking about it, it’s not going to happen. If Biden were 5 or maybe 10 years younger, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. He’s had a successful term and accomplished a lot, especially the infrastructure bills. Of course he looks older, have you seen before & after pictures of recent presidents? Regrettably, I think Biden had a bad night. But, he sounds much better at recent rallies or fundraisers. HCR makes some really great points - The media is not covering Trump’s countless stream of lies - Trump’s stream of lies are a debate tactic, especially effective against someone with a stutter - Biden has effectively been leading for the last 3 1/2 years - Unfortunately, the media is reporting Trump’s narrative and letting him call the shots heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/june-27-2024In contrast, Trump came out strong but faded and became less coherent over time. His entire performance was either lies or rambling non-sequiturs. He lied so incessantly throughout the evening that it took CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale almost three minutes, speaking quickly, to get through the list. It went on and on, and that was the point. This was not a debate. It was Trump using a technique that actually has a formal name, the Gish gallop, although I suspect he comes by it naturally. It’s a rhetorical technique in which someone throws out a fast string of lies, non-sequiturs, and specious arguments, so many that it is impossible to fact-check or rebut them in the amount of time it took to say them. Trying to figure out how to respond makes the opponent look confused, because they don’t know where to start grappling with the flood that has just hit them. It is a form of gaslighting, and it is especially effective on someone with a stutter, as Biden has. At the end of the evening, pundits were calling not for Trump—a man liable for sexual assault and business fraud, convicted of 34 felonies, under three other indictments, who lied pathologically—to step down, but for Biden to step down…because he looked and sounded old. At 81, Biden is indeed old, but that does not distinguish him much from Trump, who is 78 and whose inability to answer a question should raise concerns about his mental acuity. Of far more lasting importance than this one night is the clear evidence that stage performance has trumped substance in political coverage in our era. Nine years after Trump launched his first campaign, the media continues to let him call the shots.

PG&E is allowed to continually screw people over for their own mistakes/fires. Really most people I know are staying for the awesome weather we have most of the year. Except for the DMV and unhoused issues the rest has nothing to do with him. Gas is based on prior governors laws to help with smog and pollution s (which is has) and the oil industry, PG&E can not be controlled by him, the house market is to blame by private firms buying and reselling, property tax is based on said housing market, and educational funding is based off of student enrollment and other factors. In my area we have not received less expect for student enrollment decline all other areas have increased in funding. And honestly the unhoused is up to each city. They get the funding. They have to figure it out. And many cities misused the funding and are in trouble. I also don't want to die from asthma and not be able to breathe like what happened in the 80s when I was a kid before our changed gas laws for the environment. Do I want him as president? No. But he has made great strides and isn't bad.

We are screwed! I'm not sure anyone else they would put in at this point could beat Trump. Biden looked very weak. I watched on MSNBC, and they reiterated how the past 3 or 4 incumbents looked really bad in their first debate but still won the election. Who knows.
But for those saying you won't vote, I think that's a vote for Trump.
And PLEASE vote down ballot. If we can force Republicans to lose the house and we can win a better majority in the Senate, we may be able to protect the country! Otherwise, we are really screwed

I say this because people did that in a local election 4 years ago and our current city governor is not democratic in his policies at all. He swung R and has now lost support for a lot of people. He has screwed us over a few times. KNOW the candidate. I vote R if they are more moderate and align with policies I want as a D and are better than the D running.

We need some new, younger and innovative blood in BOTH parties. This is getting ridiculous.

What exactly do you think Trump will do if re-elected? About the only thing he did during his presidency was pass tax cuts that added to the deficit and mostly benefited the wealthy. And he appointed 3 conservative justices to the Supreme Court. We have them to thank for overturning Roe and striking down gun safety laws on bump stocks and a 100 year old NY law restricting people from carrying guns in public places. Economists have said if Trump is re-elected, he will put the economy into a recession with his proposed tariffs and plans to deport 11 million migrants. Also, if Trump is elected, we will be lucky if we have another election. Trump will do everything he can to consolidate power and stay in power. He learned from his previous attempts to overturn the election and Jan 6. He won’t repeat the same mistakes.

They have started processing things online and utilizing kiosks for simple/regular transactions. Progress is not with out stumbling blocks but it is helping to alleviate the need to go in person.

I have concerns about Biden's age, but I think he has done a good job overall and he has and will surround himself with good people. If he had to step down I trust Kamala Harris. I do not trust any Republicans in office right now Trump has been a dumpster fire since he was young. The bar is set so low for him it is ridiculous.

People have to forget about voting for a person/personality. You're voting for a platform and a party. Other countries do this better - they vote in a party, which then chooses a leader. Americans have this ridiculous idea that we're supposed to vote for this one individual who is going to save us all.
That person doesn't exist. Vote for the party that best aligns with your values. Vote.

And while I wish Biden had a stronger showing last night, I will forever vote for 'whoever is not Trump'.

You know how we all talk here that we would be surprised if Trump showed up, how he would try to find a way out. If Pres Biden had not shown up and a press release came out that he was sick, the Right would have eaten that crap up. Gleefully so. I watched the first bit and then had to turn it off. Finished watching The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I need a bit of Dame Judi and Bill Nighy to cleanse the palate. If there is time for him to step down and a new younger blood step in, then by all means it should be done. BUT it needs to be one that will be accepted and ready, willing and able to do what has to be done to win. I can't believe I am saying this but it is time to stop being nice. Blow back on all the lies. I have a daughter and a niece, who is gay, and a future DIL...I do fear for their future.

Our closest DMV is in another town 20 miles away. When that one is closed it’s more than an hour to the next closest. To expect people to do things online who are computer challenged is horrible.
